Target Corp. (TGT), looking to fix its Canadian operations after a money-losing expansion into the country, is revamping the product lineup, improving supplies and teaming up with celebrity designer Sarah Richardson.
The move follows a review of the Canadian business this year, the Minneapolis-based company said today in a statement. In addition to releasing Richardson-designed products next year, Target Canada is expanding its maternity and cosmetic products and will roll out an exclusive brand of household cleaners called Better Life.
Canadians, who for years shopped at Target just over the border in the U.S., were unimpressed by its expansion into the country. They found prices at the local stores were higher, while the retailer failed to keep enough merchandise in stock. Target said today it will begin matching rivals prices and better the supply chain in a bid to change that impression.
Youve got to have more local and regional taste in Canada than just thinking you can go out there and open U.S. stores with a bunch of U.S. brands, Brian Yarbrough, an equity analyst at Edward Jones in St. Louis who rates the stock a buy, said in a phone interview. Its got to resonate.
The shares fell 0.3 percent to $58.26 at the close in New York, extending a 7.9 percent decline this year.
The move was part of a broader shake-up at Target Corp., which tapped PepsiCo Inc. executive Brian Cornell as its new chief executive officer in July. Close

Question: We bought a small ranch house three miles from Bethany Beach, Del., in 2007. The house, which we use on weekends and holidays, came with light beige wall-to-wall carpeting. After lots of guests and two dogs, its now in desperate need of replacement.
Ive gone to flooring stores, but get overwhelmed by the choices: laminate (good for our dogs but bad for resale?); wood (so many different kinds and price points, bad for dogs, not good for areas near a beach?); engineered wood (what is that?); tile?; bamboo? Different carpet (yuck)? What is the best flooring for this near-the-beach house?
Chevy Chase
Answer: A floor thats easy to sweep, mop or vacuum, depending on the level of grime, seems like the best fit. You and your guests want to enjoy your time at this house. You dont want to scold people for traipsing in after expeditions to the beach. Nor do you want to spend much time cleaning.
You might want to focus on the types of vinyl that manufacturers market as luxury vinyl. Available as planks, tiles and sometimes sheets, it comes in styles that mimic hardwood, stone or ceramic tile. The designs are high-definition photographs of actual wood, stone or ceramic tiles, so the resemblance is very close. The photo layer is topped with a thick, clear layer that resists scratches and stains. Most spills wipe up with just warm water. Installing vinyl that looks like pricey tropical hardwood flooring could seem a little odd in an informal, simple house. Many of the designs that look like stone or ceramic tile look less pretentious.
If you dont like the idea of vinyl or cant find a style you like, other good options include bamboo, which is harder than most hardwoods, and stone or ceramic tile, provided you choose a style thats slip-resistant and rated for use as flooring. Instead of spending several weekends looking through samples at home centers or flooring stores, you might want to browse through the design sections of manufacturers Web sites, such as http://www.armstrong.com and http://www.mohawkflooring.com.
Skip carpet, if for no other reason than that it makes you say yuck. Traditional hardwood flooring isnt a great choice, either; to keep it in good shape, youd need to be too protective of it. Laminate, which is very tough and therefore sometimes recommended for houses with dogs, can be so slick that dogs slide around on it. And if it does get scratched from beach sand and dogs, theres no way to repair it.
Question: I have a Ridgeway grandfather clock that loses about five minutes a day. I have adjusted the pendulum to the max but it is still slow. What can I do to fix it myself?

Social worker, toymaker, newspaper writer, carpenter, massage therapist, dishwasher, grant writer, musician. Name a job, Todd Samusson probably has done it before.
I just cant do the same thing for a long time, says the 62-year-old, from the shaded patio of his front lawn in the Mount Tabor neighborhood of Southeast Portland.
The son of an army engineer, Samusson grew up tinkering with his fathers tools and lived in Morocco, Virginia and Texas before settling in Portland with his wife, Paula Manley, in 1988.
Since moving to Portland, Samusson has added a new occupation to his rsum: garbage collector. And then he turns it into art.
I probably went to a hundred garage sales in the course of a five-year period. I just like the look of old things and rust, Samusson says.
It all started 15 years ago, when a piece of garbage caught Samussons eye one day while he was remodeling a nearby house. There was a piece of junk, a metal flange like the type that comes out of vents, he recounts. I kept looking at it in the pile of debris every day and thinking Im going to take that home and do something with it.
And then came Bob
After some hammering, flattening, bending and sewing, that metal flange became the mouth of Bob, a metal mask made of an oven pan, a tin can, a few copper pipes and two beaten-down pennies. And after Bob, the deluge.
It opened up a whole new world, Samusson says. You cut something at an angle and all of a sudden you look at it differently.
Samusson started looking at a lot of things differently.

Latest lighting technology would help realise aspirations for New Zealand stadiums
Wellington, August 14, 2014 New Zealand stadiums have the opportunity to become world leaders in pitch lighting, with Philips release in New Zealand of LED floodlights as part of its ArenaVision range.
Sports lighting technology has developed considerably in recent years, with LED floodlights now able to provide the high lumen output required for high-definition broadcasting standards, while also providing control and flexibility to manage light spillage onto neighbouring roads and properties, says Gordon Wiffen, General Manager of Philips Lighting New Zealand.
The new ArenaVision LED range provides high quality light output and greater control capabilities than standard metal halide floodlights. ArenaVision LED floodlights also use up to 34.7% less energy than ArenaVision metal halide floodlights, while the inherently longer lifetime of LED reduces maintenance with longer periods between lamp changes. Typically, metal halide floodlighting lamps should be replaced every three-seasons to maintain the lighting levels required, whereas the Philips LED system is expected to last in excess of 10 seasons.
ArenaVision LED technology allows a quick re-start compared to the warm-up time of Philips metal halide floodlights, making it faster to continue events in an unforeseen power outage, or switch between optimal lighting configurations for specific sports.
The ArenaVision LED control system can also be used to create entertainment lighting effects that would normally require dedicated stage-lighting luminaires. At the push of a button, the user can switch between fixed lighting configurations that fulfil sports codes requirements, and pre-programed special lighting effects.
Lighting is critical for sports venues, not only to give the high definition needed for both players and broadcasters, but also to enhance the sense of spectacle, anticipation and emotion that comes with competitive sports, including giving stadiums that extra wow-factor through colourful light displays, says Mr Wiffen.
Philips has already lit up a number of New Zealand sporting venues such as Eden Park, Nelsons Trafalgar Park and Dunedins indoor Forsyth Barr Stadium with its high intensity discharge ArenaVision range. Philips ArenaVision has also lit up major stadiums around the world, such as Old Trafford Stadium, the Guangzhou Olympic Stadium and five of the football stadiums recently used in Brazil.
With Philips ArenaVision LED now successfully implemented in sports stadiums such as Ekinox at Bourg-en-Bresse, France and Chelsea Football Clubs Stamford Bridge, there is an opportunity for New Zealand stadiums to take advantage of the latest developments in lighting technology, which would benefit broadcasters, players, bill payers and spectators alike, says Mr Wiffen.

HersheyPark has announced it will be adding its first indoor, spinning glow-coaster. It's also the first in the United States.
Set to debut in May 2015, "Laff Trackk" will be the 13th roller coaster at Hersheypark.
Officials at the theme park says the coaster will feature fun house images lighting the way.
The coaster is set to travel up to 45 miles per hour, has a 50-foot drop and lasts a little more than a minute for the full ride.
Designers say the newest addition will keep up with Hersheypark's tradition of "family friendly."
The ride will be housed in the Midway America section of the park.

Hamilton County commissioners next week will vote whether to assign architects to four new school projects, send $26 million to the city's Industrial Development Board for the planned expansion at Volkswagen and confirm or deny a mayoral appointment to the Erlanger board of trustees.
During an agenda session Wednesday, commissioners heard resolutions assigning nearly $2.9 million to four architects for the design of a new Ganns Middle Valley Elementary and additions at Nolan Elementary School, Sale Creek Middle/High School and Wolftever Creek Elementary School.
In March, commissioners agreed to Mayor Jim Coppinger's plan to build the four projects for $48 million. The votes next week will only be to design the schools, and Commissioner Tim Boyd, who sits on the commission's finance committee, wanted to know if the design portion was at or under budget.
"Since these are definitive figures on these resolutions, can I interpret that to mean that the budget price for these particular projects has been whittled down?" he asked during a committee meeting.
But Gary Waters, who manages facilities for Hamilton County Schools, said design fees were set by a state price schedule and "we think we are still at the estimating stage."
According to the resolutions, Derthick, Henley & Wilkerson Architects would design Ganns for $1.4 million; Franklin Architects would design the Nolan Elementary addition for $328,590; Hefferlin + Kronenberg Architects would draw up the extension of Sale Creek Middle/High School for $679,300; and Billingsley/Architect would handle the addition at Wolftever Creek Elementary for $421,976.
In March, the Ganns school was estimated to cost $26 million. Additions at Sale Creek are expected to cost $12 million and $5 million each at the other two schools.
Commissioners also will hear a resolution to give $26 million to Chattanooga's IDB, which Finance Committee Chairman Joe Graham said was part of the deal for Volkswagen's expansion at Enterprise South industrial park.
"This is basically some cleanup work on the budget for VW. This is the money we agreed for the expansion. It's coming out of our fund balance now, but we did leave the door open to turn this over to bonds if need be," Graham said.
Commissioners also will consider the appointment of Richard Youngblood to the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Hospital Authority board of trustees.

Oleta Partners Launches First Phase of Construction at Biscayne Landing, the largest Mixed-Used Real Estate Development in North Miami
North Miami, Florida (PRWEB) - Oleta Partners, the developers of Biscayne Landing, the premier mixed-use real estate development located at 151st Street and Biscayne Boulevard in the City of North Miami, Florida, announced today that the first phase of construction at the 180+ acre site is underway.
Over the course of the project, Oleta Partners will convert the currently underutilized site at Biscayne Landing into a development of more than 4,000 residences, parks, and retail with more than 800,000 square feet of retail space, with a town center to serve thousands of residents and visitors from surrounding areas.
Thirty-seven acres of the project will be devoted to recreation, community and open space, including two parks and a 10,000 square foot modern meeting and social community center.
We are extremely excited to move ahead on the Biscayne Landing project, stated Michael Tillman, Vice President of Oleta Partners. Biscayne Landing will positively impact the future of the City of North Miami, its residents, and nearby communities by creating hundreds of jobs and generating millions of dollars in annual sales and tax revenues.
As part of the beginning phase of construction, Oleta Partners selected DC Equipment, a firm located in the City of North Miami with more than 16 years of experience in the construction industry, as the designated contractor to begin the first of many construction activities, including preparations for the spine road on Biscayne Boulevard and 143rd Street.
We are very honored to have been selected to work on Biscayne Landing, a project that is of monumental importance to our city, said Ricardo Rodriguez, President of DC Equipment. We look forward to working with Oleta Partners in making the Biscayne Landing project a reality.
At the onset of the project, Oleta Partners established a Local Preference Office (LPO) to provide job placement opportunities to North Miami residents with contractors working at Biscayne Landing, identify and assist qualified local vendors interested in participating in the project, and offer vocational education and outreach assistance with an occupational training component to enable greater resident participation.
The DC Equipment contract is expected to create several new jobs for local City of North Miami residents and represents the first of several hundred new construction jobs that will become available to City of North Miami residents over the next ten years.

Commercial property giant Bruntwood and The University of Manchester have submitted plans for the second phase of the 50m redevelopment of Manchester Business School.
The plans include the development of a 40,500 sq ft retail and leisure facility over 14 units for a mix of retail, food and leisure occupiers and forms part of the development of Manchesters Oxford Road Corridor.
Phase two also includes the removal of a link bridge across Oxford Road to improve views and light levels in the area, while public space will also be improved.
Around 200,000 sq ft of MBS facilities will be refurbished as part of the plans to improve teaching and administrative accommodation, a new learning library and enterprise zone.
Phase one includes the construction of a new hotel and enhanced Manchester Business School Executive Education Centre, which is due to start later this year.
Toby Sproll, head of retail and leisure at Bruntwood, said: The creation of a vibrant retail and leisure offer as part of the wider redevelopment of Manchester Business School is vital. Not only is there strong demand for a great retail mix from the Universitys students, staff, workers and local residents, the site is a key strategic location in the Oxford Road Corridor.
At the moment, there is very little retail or leisure provision between the city centre and Whitworth Park. These plans, however, create a new focal point that will provide fantastic amenities to the underserved catchment, attracting customers from first thing in the morning until well into the evening. We are confident demand for this location will see it become a thriving new destination in Manchester.
Diana Hampson, director of estates and facilities at The University of Manchester, added: We share a long-term vision with Bruntwood to deliver not just exemplary facilities for the Manchester Business School and the University, but to create a landmark development in the Oxford Road Corridor.
"We are delighted, therefore, to be submitting this planning application, which will see the implementation of the next stage of the vision. With the other developments proposed or under way in the Corridor, such as the Oxford Road Station, the areas future is set to be very positive.
This development forms part of the Universitys 10-year, 1bn Campus Masterplan to create some of the most modern campus facilities in the world.

An El Paso couple who sued the El Paso Independent School District over home schooling has to follow state education regulations, and school officials can ask for evidence that children are being educated, a state appeals court has ruled.
The 8th Court of Appeals ruled earlier this month that Laura and Michael McIntyre and other parents who home school children do not have an absolute constitutional right to home school and must abide by state education requirements.
Chief Justice Ann Crawford McClure wrote in the Aug. 6 opinion that a district attendance officers can ask parents to provide evidence that shows their children are being taught, and can ensure that all students are either enrolled in school or are in a "bona fide home school" when there is credible suspicion.
"No parents have ever prevailed in any reported case on a theory that they have an absolute constitutional right to educate their children in the home, completely free of any state supervision, regulation, or requirements." McClure wrote.
Laura McIntyre who took part in the Stand Up for Religious Freedom movement in 2012, is a pro-life activist in El Paso. She and her husband were also part of 2012 El Pasoans for Traditional Family Values campaign to recall former El Paso Mayor John Cook, and former representatives Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega. The McIntyre's contributed $1,000 to the campaign.
The McIntyres did not return calls for comment.
Mark Mendoza, the director of the ALPHA initiative for the El Paso Independent School District who was also sued by Laura and Michael McIntyre, said the ruling does not mean the school district will interfere with a parent's right to educate children. In addition, proof, sought by an attendance officer, would not rely on standardized tests.
"The most important thing is the fact that this really clarifies the role that the school district plays when it is suspected that home school may not be happening," Mendoza said. "In no way do we want to question the right of the parent to home school their children. It is only when we receive an allegation that this decision clearly underscores the responsibility of the school district and the attendance officer's right to be able to verify that the student is being taught."
The Texas Home School Coalition Association advises parents to send a letter of assurance to the district, stating that the child is in fact being home schooled. The coalition recommends against filling out or providing additional forms or information to the district truancy officer.
In the fall of 2004, the McIntyres withdrew their nine children from a private school and began home schooling inside a motorcycle dealership, according to the ruling.
