Holy moly.
Thats what teacher Jan Cline and her colleagues said when they reached the third floor of Broadwater Elementary Tuesday afternoon.
They were among the 100 or so parents, children and district staff who toured the renovations in progress at Broadwater and McKinley schools Tuesday.
A year from now, expansions and retrofits designed to bring the historic schools into the 21st century will be complete. But the groundwork has been laid this summer, and contractors and school officials were excited to show it off.
Much of the work so far has been to the schools guts think HVAC systems and window replacements, SD2 bond project manager Lew Anderson told the groups assembled at each site.
Other improvements are in plain sight.
Cline, for instance, could see for the first time her classroom on the opposite end of the third floor at Broadwater. There, Hardy Construction crews have knocked out a small room dubbed the cloffice by school staff, yielding a spacious foyer instead of mazelike corridors.
To see that gone made me kind of emotional, Cline, a 5th grade teacher, said.
Theres much left to do at Broadwater. Concrete footings to the schools east offer just an outline of the large expansion thats to come and will provide space for the gymnasium, cafeteria and offices, according to principal Joe Halligan. Once thats finished, the annex building to the west will be demolished.
When you look in the classrooms, youll have to use your imagination, Anderson told attendees at McKinley. Classrooms in both schools, for the most part, havent been touched yet.

The FAA has authorized the addition of the AS332L1 model to the FAA-certified cockpit voice and flight data recorder (CVFDR) supplemental type certificate (STC) held by Vector Aerospace subsidiary Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services-North America (HS-NA). This is an addition to the FAA STC approval Vector received last year on the CVFDR for AS332C and AS332L helicopter models.
We are very proud to add the AS332L1 to our CVFDR STC, states Elvis Moniz, vice president, operations in Langley, BC. This is a unique offering which provides Vector Aerospace with a competitive advantage in the market, and we are pleased to offer the CVFDR to AS332L1 operators across the globe. The CVFDR retrofit package features a light-weight, solid-state, low-power-consumption, state-of-the-art CVFDR with an underwater acoustic beacon and a six-year battery-life warranty with an optional integrated recorder independent power supply (RIPS) requiring no additional wiring. A digital flight-data acquisition unit is also integrated in the system, capable of accepting over 50 flight data parameters. The CVFDR system is rated at 50,000 hrs MTBF and meets Part 135 operating requirements.

A pensioner tragically died when she fell through a fourth-floor window that she was cleaning, an inquest heard.
Sarah Phelan, aged 82, was washing a windowsill of her flat at Avondale House, North Cumberland St, Dublin 1, on the evening of July 8 last year when the accident happened.
Garda believe she was attempting to clean pigeon droppings off the windowsill when she fell.
Neighbour Mary McDonnell told Dublin Coroners Court that she was sitting in her flat in the block opposite Mrs Phelans when the accident happened at around 9pm. She said she could see Mrs Phelan washing the windowsill of the top-floor flat.
A few minutes later, she was hanging out of the cable wire shouting help, help. I ran around but when I got there she was on the ground, she said.
She had fallen four floors to a small garden area directly below the flat window. Neighbours rushed to her aid and were performing CPR when paramedics and garda arrived. Garda Kieran Brady said she was unresponsive at the scene. Mrs Phelan was taken to the Mater Hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The postmortem found that she died as a result of major internal injuries sustained in the fall, including a transected aorta.
Garda Brady said garda are satisfied there was no foul play involved.
The court heard that Mrs Phelan was fastidiously clean and had a dislike of pigeons congregating on her windowsill. Garda Brady said a cloth was found on the windowsill. When asked by coroner Dr Brian Farrell if he believed she had fallen across the windowsill while cleaning it, Garda Brady said yes.
The coroner expressed concern that the window ledges in the flat were very low and the windows could be opened fully. The family told him that the flat, which is a Dublin City Council property, has since been given to a family with young children.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors last week adopted an ordinance that requires the installation of new water bottle filling stations where drinking fountains are required in private commercial development projects in unincorporated Santa Clara County. The ordinance is a local amendment to the California Plumbing Code that includes the installations of water bottle filling stations for new construction or renovations in government facilities and commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.
"Increasing water consumption in our community starts by providing fresh, accessible, and free water where residents work and gather," said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Ken Yeager, who introduced the ordinance. "Encouraging residents to drink water instead of sugar-loaded beverages will help us curb the obesity crisis facing Santa Clara County."
Also known as "hydration stations" or "drink tap stations," bottle filling stations are locations where water bottles can be filled with potable water. The stations are designed so water bottles can be placed below a downward facing water tap, and be filled with potable water activated by a sensor or manual button. Unlike water fountains, water filling stations are attractively designed to provide clean, safe drinking water, as the water tap is often protected and the water provided is usually filtered and chilled.
"We want to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to provide a convenient way to fill reusable water bottles with clean potable water," said board President Mike Wasserman, who is vice chair of the Board's Housing, Land Use Environment and Transportation Committee. "This new requirement will make clean drinking accessible for Santa Clara County residents and visitors."
Despite the belief that bottled water is a safer source of drinking water, studies have shown the potential for contamination and exposure to toxins can be higher than tap water. In comparison with municipal tap water, bottled water has a substantial environmental impact, as petroleum is needed for the creation of disposable plastic water bottles, as well as extensive energy and materials for packaging and transportation.
According to the Container Recycling Institute, while most water bottles are recyclable, more than 85 percent of plastic water bottles become garbage or litter. Like tap water, water bottle filling stations have a smaller environmental footprint and represents substantial savings to consumers.
The county ordinance would apply to new buildings, additions to buildings, and instances where building permits are required to change the occupancy of a building (for example, from a barn to a reception facility). The ordinance would only apply to commercial buildings or buildings in unincorporated Santa Clara County where the existing California Building code requires the installation of drinking fountains.
"Under the new ordinance, bottle water filling stations will be installed at a ratio of one water bottle filling station per each floor applicable to construction projects required by the California Building Code to install drinking fountains," said Nash Gonzalez, director of the Department of Planning and Development. "Our goal is to support those involved in new commercial projects or renovations to ensure they install stations that are highly visible and accessible."
Bottle filing stations are usually installed using one of two design options: Either as a stand-alone station or a station integrated together with a drinking fountain. The product and installation costs for bottle filling station will depend upon the design type (from stand-alone to integrated fountain/water bottle filling), location (water piping extensions might be required) and features, such as filtration cooling systems, which will require ongoing maintenance associated with routine replacement of filters.
The county's Facilities and Fleet Department has already begun incorporating hydration units in county facilities remodeling projects.
