GREENSBORO, N.C. A current employee of Anytime Duct Cleaning says the company is targeting the elderly in the Triad.

In June the Better Business Bureau started receiving calls about the company which first turned up in Saint Louis with complaints, then in Charlotte where the BBB gave them an F grade.

I want to warn people about this especially the elderly, says the employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The whistle blower says he hasnt worked for the company long, but long enough to know how it works. They have a call center in North Hollywood, California where they use a senior citizen call list to contact the elderly and sign them up for a home visit for about $40.

The employee says technicians, who work on commission, are taught to up sale once they arrive at a home. They are told to tell the customer they have mold in their duct work or they found a carbon monoxide leak and then charge them anywhere from $500 to $1,000 to fix a problem that doesnt exist.

The company states on their website they are licensed in North Carolina to install and repair air condition units but no license is on file with the state or the City of Greensboro.

Some of the complaints to the BBB include unfinished work to taking money for doing nothing.

This is a familiar tactic with these people, said the son of a 90-year-old victim who, for the safety of his mother, didnt want to be identified during an interview last week. His mom says men with the company knocked saying they were there, at the request of a relative to clean her ducts. She says they stayed for about 20 minutes outside her home and then presented a bill for $577.

She wrote a check, but her son was able to cancel it before being cashed.

If somebody shows up especially if you are an older individual and they are there to work saying your relatives sent them to you, you need to call your relative immediately, he said.

GENEVA An unmarked light switch in the Kane County morgue has caused yet another problem for the coroners office.

Crews conducting mold remediation in the Geneva facility last month turned the switch off in the course of their work, Coroner Rob Russell said.

But instead of turning off lights, he said, the flipped switch turned off refrigeration units containing thousands of samples of blood and body tissue materials that could be tied to criminal and civil litigation.

On Monday, Russell briefly turned the switch off to demonstrate his bewilderment that the crews didnt notice the noisy refrigeration units were silenced with the switch.

Gee, it really got quiet here, Russell said.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the coroner could have taken such precautions as labeling or covering the switch to prevent the situation from happening. He noted people are trained to turn off lights.

If the lights are on and youre going to leave the room, what do you do? Lauzen said.

Russell doesnt know how long the refrigeration units were off, as he and his staff werent in the building at the time of remediation, he said.

The remediation was done by a company hired by the county, Lauzen said. He did not have the cost of information readily available Monday but described it as expensive.

Since finding the refrigeration units turned off, Russells staff has been working to catalog the contents a time-consuming task because of the offices antiquated filing system, he said.

PORTSMOUTH

Norfolk Naval Shipyard officials hope to restore a historic home that has housed the facility's commanders since the 1800s. It was heavily damaged Tuesday in an early morning fire.

Known as Quarters "A," the stately brick house was built in 1837 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

With wide windows and two staircases leading to the front door, the home's interior boasts Italian marble fireplaces, large archways and two kitchens. Enclosed porches look out over lush grounds.

Outside the house Tuesday afternoon, the air smelled of smoke. A gaping hole took the place of the middle top-story window, and there was a wide, blackened hole in the roof.

The top floor was "engulfed" when firefighters arrived, said Jeff Cunningham, a shipyard spokesman.

"This was a major fire with very significant damage," Cunningham said.

He said it will take time to determine exactly how much work will have to be done, but "our goal is to restore it as it was.

"Absolutely."

If you're trying to maximize the value of your home, it's best to choose a neutral color scheme that unifies the entire house, makes the space look bigger and will appeal to a wide variety of potential buyers.

Install Crown MoldingThis task is surprisingly simple but adds a lot of character. You simply buy the molding, which is nothing more than decorative strips of wood from a home improvement store, cut it to the size that fits your room (or have the store cut it for you), and attach it to the top of the wall with a nail gun. Update FixturesSwitch plates, outlet covers, curtain rods, light fixtures and doorknobs are often boring or overlooked, but a few bucks can add major pizzazz. Attractive metal switch plates and outlet covers can cost as little as $5 apiece but look much more expensive. Light fixtures and decorative curtain rods can be a little pricier, but sometimes you can make an inexpensive piece look elegant with the right can of spray paint. Again, make sure to choose items in colors and finishes that will appeal to a wide audience.

Install Ceiling FansEveryone likes to save money on electricity bills, making ceiling fans an appealing addition to any home. Using ceiling fans can definitely cut down on air conditioning costs, and in fact, they can also reduce heating costs by circulating warm air away from the ceiling. A basic fan costs about $50, and a nice one can be had for no more than a couple hundred dollars. If you don't already have overhead lighting in the room or rooms you want to install fans in, the electrical work needed to install them can significantly escalate the cost of this project as well as take it out of the DIY realm.

Improve Window TreatmentsThe cheap vertical plastic blinds, paper shades, or horizontal aluminum blinds that may have come with your house definitely don't add any value to your home. Consider replacing them with plantation shutters, wooden blinds or nice drapes. By the way, it doesn't matter whether the drapes will come with the house if you are in the market as a seller. The important thing is that they make it look nice while it's on the market and help you get top dollar for your home.

Reveal and Restore Hardwood FloorsOlder homes in particular are likely to have hardwood floors lurking beneath carpet. If your floor squeaks, that's a decent sign that you may have wood floors. If you're not sure, pull up your carpet in an unnoticeable corner and investigate. If you do have wood floors, there's a good chance you'll have to refinish them to restore them to their original splendor, but that will be much less expensive than installing new flooring from scratch. BathroomRedo the Bathroom FloorMany people can learn how to do this task themselves with a simple class (your local home improvement store may offer one). Because installation makes up a major part of the cost of most home improvements, saving all that money on labor may allow you to pick nicer flooring than you could otherwise afford. Opting for a neutral-colored tile will add the most value.

Living RoomClean Fireplace BrickIf you have a brick fireplace and it's ever been used, chances are some of the brick is stained with soot and creosote. Because a nice fireplace can be a major selling point in a home, you'll want to make yours look as nice as possible. Just use a damp rag to wipe away some of the soot, then follow up with a fireplace cleaner designed to remove creosote. It will take some scrubbing with a stiff brush and possibly several applications, but you'll have that brick looking spiffy when you're finished.

Don't Forget the ExteriorIt may be easy for you to ignore your home's exterior when you spend most of your time inside, but it's the first and sometimes only impression that others get of your house. Here are a few simple ways to make it look its best. Install a New Front Door A very basic steel front door costs about $100, but for just another $100-$200, you can get a door with a lot more character that will improve your home's curb appeal. If you can't afford a new door, a fresh coat of paint in an inviting color may be all you need. Replace the Front Door MatWhen you've had the same doormat for years, it can be easy to overlook how worn out or dirty it's become, but it's one of the first impressions people get of your home. This is one area where $20 can make a big difference.

Power wash the Exterior of Your HomeFor less time and money, a good washing can make your home's exterior look almost as good as a fresh coat of paint.

A business fire caused by a small explosion caused a scare as a repair worker was working on an appliance in Albany.

It happened at Brown's Thrift Shop Appliance Repair Monday morning on Moultrie Road.

Albany firefighters responded after the incident where a worker said he was performing a repair on an appliance. He said he set aside a blow torch fed by an oxygen tank and a small explosion happened, igniting flames for a short period of time.

No one was injured in the incident.
