Japan's Economy Contracts in 2nd Quarter

    - August 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Dow Jones Business News, August 12, 2014, 08:35:00 PM EDT

TOKYO--Japan's economy contracted sharply in the second quarter after a sales-tax increase in April sent household spending tumbling, which economists said could pressure the government to take additional stimulus measures.

Real gross domestic product, the total value of all goods and services produced in the economy, shrank 6.8% in the three months through June on an annualized basis from the prior quarter.

That was slightly less than a 7.1% contraction forecast by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal, but economists said a larger-than-expected drop in private consumption and a sharp increase in inventories raised concerns about the resilience of Japan's economic recovery.

A fallback in economic output was expected after the nation's sales tax rose to 8% from 5% on April 1. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other policy makers have said they expect the downturn to be short-lived.

If that forecast proves too rosy, the government might have to compile more economic-stimulus measures and reconsider plans to raise the sales tax further to 10% in October 2015, economists said.

Investors should watch out for a risk that the domestic economy stays sluggish for longer than expected, said Yasunari Ueno, chief market economist at Mizuho Securities.

"The next focal point is how much the economy will rebound in the July-September period. If the upward pressure is weak, it will likely increase the chance that Prime Minister Abe decides in December to delay the next sales-tax hike," Mr. Ueno said.

The economy expanded 6.1% in the first quarter, as households stocked up on big-ticket items such as washing machines before the sales tax rose.

Government officials were more sanguine about Wednesday's data. Economy Minister Akira Amari said the figure didn't change the government's outlook that the economy continues to improve steadily. He said the government would respond flexibly on the economy but added that he didn't currently see a need to compile an additional budget.

Grand Imperial Poobah: Trades Places With Ryan Howard

Keep up with your favorite teams and athletes with daily updates.

By Stan The Grand Imperial Poobah Hochman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) (Editors Note)Stan Hochman, a Daily News sports columnist for 55 years, has been appearing on 94WIPs morning show for over a year now, settling disputes (and starting new ones) as the Grand Imperial Poobah. He brings that persona to CBSPhilly.com/poobah on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we welcome input on which issues you want the Poobah to take a good, hard look at. Send requests and ideas for The Poobah to WIPpoobah@gmail.com.

Without further ado, heres The Poobah.

Phil E. Phan: My sources tell me that Poobah did, indeed, trade places with Ryan Howard last week. How did it work out?

Poobah: Your sources are impeccable, which means they lack pecs, abs, quads and most other muscles. We were hoping to keep it quiet, but apparently the secret is out. I struck out with runners in scoring position and heard boos. I drove in the winning run in two games against the Mets and heard cheers. This is a fickle crowd. Been fickle for three years. The Phillies have been lousy for three years. Case closed.

Met with the interior decorator who wanted to know how many flat-screen high-def 56-inch television sets we wanted for the bedrooms in that modest home were building in Florida. I told him six was a nice round number and he did a nifty pirouette, so I guess that means he was happy.

Rockville approves preliminary steps for King Farm Farmstead — Gazette.Net

    - August 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rockville is taking some preliminary steps toward preserving the King Farm Farmstead Park, as city officials work to determine a more detailed plan for the farm.

While some of the structures have potential for future use, others are deteriorating and the need to find a use for the site is increasing, according to a report on the facility provided to the mayor and City Council.

They voted 4-0 Monday night to schedule a briefing with the citys Historic District Commission and allocate money to deal with groundhogs on the property and assess it for hazardous materials while they consider what should be done with the property in the long term.

The city needs to start making some decisions on the farm, said Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton.

We cannot wait any longer, she said.

The steps approved Monday will cost from $22,000 to $32,000. The report estimates that taking all the actions it recommends would cost about $5.6 million.

The King Farm was once the largest farm in the area, but much of it has been developed into homes, parks, stores and offices. Today, only eight buildings on 7 acres remain of the original farm.

The farmstead park was given to Rockville in the late 1990s and was designated as historic by the city in 2006.

The agreement that gave the farm to the city requires that it must be used as a neighborhood park and site for recreational activity for the public.

Despite its current state, the site has been the center of much interest from various groups.

The sky's no limit for MAD Architects' Ma Yansong

    - August 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Ma Yansong, of MAD Architects, outlines his vision for the future with Domain editor Alice Stolz.

If Chinese architect Ma Yansong could move mountains, he would. Instead, through his distinctive architecture, he has become a leader in designing buildings that bring elements of nature into the city.

Born in Beijing, Mr Ma, the founder and principal of internationally renown architectural firm, MAD Architects, has a deeply rooted yearning to be surrounded by mountains and waterfalls.

Shunning square masculine-styled buildings and embracing curves and fluid lines, Mr Mas style is nothing but distinctive. His Absolute World Towers in Mississauga, Canada has been dubbed the Marilyn Monroe Towers for their sinuous shapes. Yes, you see a lot of curves in my architecture, Mr Ma said while in Melbourne last week as a guest speaker for Melbourne Universitys Deans Lecture Series.

The Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center is a city-scale urban project by MAD Architects.

North American high-rises are symbols of power and strength and people feel nothing [when they see them]. They feel theyre isolated from those structures so I wanted to do something more lifelike.

In China we have to build a lot of buildings because of the population, but we can still focus on the environment and the landscape. What if we create a whole city as a park or as a garden and then we have architecture within this space. Thats what Im trying to achieve.

If Mr Mas designs are like nothing youve ever seen before, thats because you probably havent. I dont think any modern cities are doing [what Im doing] because what Im inspired by [comes from] a traditional part of Beijing. Even in the modern parts of Beijing there is no sense of nature. It is purely about buildings and big streets, its a very North American typology happening everywhere in China.
