Rural Town Needs Plumber, Hopes A Student Will Take The Plunge

Something's missing in the small town of Jackman, Maine. They've have an electrician and some carpenters among their 800-odd residents, but no plumber which can complicate things.

If a pipe bursts or a toilet backs up, many of us might not give a second thought to looking up a plumber. In most areas, there will be lots of options for services nearby.

But in the isolated town of Jackman, Maine, which has a population of around 800, the local plumber recently retired. Now, the closest plumber is in the nearest town 50 miles away.

To fill the void, one family has partnered with the local school district to create a scholarship. The 2015 Inza and Harry Hughey Memorial Scholarship will award $2,000 to a local graduate willing to become a certified plumber and come back to work in the town.

Sheryl and Larry Harth run the scholarship fund and decided to focus it on plumbing once the void hit them acutely. They moved back to the area about two years ago and built a house, hiring a plumber who lived in that town about 50 miles away to work on the project. Last year, they needed more work done and they were promised that that plumber would return.

"Well, it's been two years and we still have not seen that person," Larry Harth tells NPR's Arun Rath.

We have a great electrician and many carpenters, but we do not have a licensed plumber ... We're hoping that this will entice them.

    - Larry Harth, whose family is funding the scholarship

He says there are some folks in town who know the basics of plumbing, but they're not licensed. In emergency situations, they can only provide guidance.

Dog day care, trainer opens in old shelter

    The school

Hours at the Mountain State K9 Academy are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call (970) 353-0778, or go to http://www.mountainstatek9academy.com.

For years it was a place for saving animals from shelters.

Today, the former no-kill dog shelter along Colo. 392 can be seen just as much as a way to save dogs as ever before.

The number one reason why dogs end up in animal shelters are behavior issues that could be fixed, said Jake Kemp, who recently bought the property after months of negotiations. This can give people a way to keep their dogs, get some training and enjoy the pet they chose.

This week Kemp will open Mountain State K9 Academy, a doggie day care, boarding and training school. Soon, hell add grooming to the mix in the former Denkai Animal Sanctuary, which partnered with K9 Bed and Biscuit animal shelter from 2007-12 before moving to Eaton and opening a veterinary clinic.

Kemp, a former plumber from Fort Collins, recently returned to Colorado from St. Louis, where he trained and became a dog-training instructor at the Tom Rose School. He and former student Ashley McGaughey will train dogs on site.

He said hes been negotiating to buy the property since last November, after returning to Colorado to be near his daughter, who lives in Fort Collins.

We used to volunteer and come out here and take dogs for walks, and I never thought Id end up owning it, Kemp said of the property.

Kemp has remodeled the property, which includes the shelter and two homes. He remodeled the lobby, updated the furnaces and air conditioners, repainted, and repaired the fence. At present, he is working on eradicating the weeds to bring back the turf.

New lures use pheromones to trap and monitor bugs

    - August 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW innovative lures for trapping major horticultural pests will soon give growers an effective tool for better on-farm integrated pest management.

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry business manager Jodie Campbell said the new traps would help growers control both banana spotting bugs and fruit spotting bugs, leading to less crop damage and improved productivity.

"Banana spotting bugs and fruit spotting bugs are two major pests of a wide range of tropical and subtropical crops including avocado, macadamia, papaya, mango, limes and custard apples," she said.

"These pests were notoriously difficult to monitor, which is a large reason why growers in tropical and sub-tropical regions of Australia were forced to use broad-spectrum cover sprays.

"After more than 20 years of research and development, DAFF entomologists are now seeing very promising results from these new lures that use pheromones to trap and monitor the bugs.

"The pheromone lures have been effective in attracting both male and female spotting bugs and the 'sticky panel' trap component we designed is highly effective at catching these bugs.

"We are now at the stage of working with a commercial partner to maximise the potential of the lures to benefit the Australian horticultural industry.

"This is great news for growers, who will be able to access this technology from around mid-2015."

Organic Crop Protectants was selected as the commercial partner to take the innovative lure technology to the market.

"OCP is a well-qualified company that has been commercially focused in the business of integrated pest and disease management for over 20 years," Ms Campbell said.
