Oxford will expand its fire station, adding living quarters to the existing structure at 217 S. Elm St., according to Fire Chief John Detherage.
The total project cost is expected to be not more than $425,700, according to city documents. The city had budgeted a total of $625,000 out of its capital improvement fund, but the expansion may come in even less than the projected amount, according to Service Director Mike Dreisbach.
The project will create a two-story addition, with each floor adding 1,200 usable square feet to the existing structure, Dreisbach said. The first floor will be a training room, while the upper floor will contain living quarters.
When that firehouse was built in 1963, it was designed as a volunteer station. Now that weve got guys in it around the clock, we need more space, said Detherage. Right now, the training and living quarters are all in one room, so the addition creates separate facilities, he explained. Between 65 and 70 people work for the fire department; Detherage is the only full-time employee, he said.
The work will be done by JK Custom Homes LLC, which has done work for Talawanda Local Schools, Dreisbach said. The project includes an alternate option for a full basement, and that is expected to cost $37,000, with the base bid being $350,000. That brings the total cost to $387,000.
The project had included a second alternate for a sprinkler system in the building, but Dreisbach said there was confusion in the bids over whether this was only for the new addition or for the entire structure. Its meant to be for the entire structure, but there was considerable disparity in the bids. JK Custom Homes bid $12,000, while Empire Building Co. bid $13,000. A third company, DAG Construction Company, bid $90,500 just for the sprinklers.
Dreisbach said he intended to return to council with a new bid for the sprinklers. He expects it will be more than $12,000, but lower than $90,500. Councilman Richard Keebler said it was important to have a sprinkler system for the firehouse, noting that a blaze destroyed a volunteer firehouse in Mount Eden, Ky. this week.
Detherage said he expects the work to begin this fall and be complete in April.

The Laramie Community Recreation Centers expansion project is scheduled to break ground Monday.
The $1.8 million expansion includes an addition to the fitness areas and a new steam room and sauna, said Parks and Recreation Director Paul Harrison.
The fitness addition on the north side of the gym is set to begin first.
Theyll be adding two floors of fitness areas north of the gymnasium, Harrison said. The bottom floor will have circuit weights, while the upstairs will have two rooms.
One will be a group session room and the other, a dedicated cycling room, he added.
The fitness area addition will affect use of the north side of the gymnasium in the fall, Harrison said.
The south side might be able to be used at different times throughout construction.
He said he hopes the addition will be enclosed by October so construction can continue throughout the winter.
Construction of a steam room and sauna should begin shortly after the enclosure. The work could impede use of the indoor aquatic facilities.

TAMPA This is more than a restaurant.
Its Ulele.
In 16 days, the much-anticipated native-inspired restaurant featuring a menu with foods symbolic of the areas pre-European tribal cultures and pioneer days will reveal its charms.
From a strictly physical standpoint, its a 6,800-square-foot, red-brick warehouse with a cathedral ceiling of crisscrossed whitewashed pine beams. A polished concrete floor supports an enormous circular stainless-steel barbacoa grill where Parmesan oysters on the half shell and Berkshire pork chops glazed with guava will roast.
A wooden-stepped staircase dissects the restaurant. It leads to two elevated wooden-floor dining mezzanines that overlook an oyster-shucking station downstairs and a bar with arrowheads and shells embedded in the countertop. Dining room windows provide views of tangerine sunsets over the Hillsborough River, perfect for enjoying chilled Florida avocado soup, fish broiled in kumquat brown butter and crispy pork shank with spicy apple Craisin chutney.
On the buildings north side is a beer garden outside a brewhouse stocked with tall, shiny kettles. Along the southern face, stately palms fan out over a grassy lawn and a spring that empties cool, crystal water into a root beer-colored lagoon where a bronze statue of a mythic native girl will stand watch.
Invisible to customers will be the hopes and ambitions of those who brought the project to life.
Nothing on the menu will hint at 61-year-old restaurateur Richard Gonzmarts burning passion to create Ulele as a legacy for future generations of his family, which first opened Ybor Citys Columbia Restaurant in 1905. Born three blocks away from the water works, he and brother Casey, who together oversee the Columbia Restaurant Group, grew up playing on nearby streets and skiing on the river. The water that comes from the adjacent spring filled the water glasses and pots of their great-grandfathers restaurant and the bottles of the Ybor brewery where he worked before the Columbia came into being.
There will be no plaque commemorating Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorns steering the project toward the Gonzmarts deep pockets so the dilapidated, 112-year-old former city water works building could become a catalyst for urban renewal in Tampa Heights.
And diners wont see the more than $6 million the city spent to refurbish the largely unused Water Works Park into a riverfront playground that will act as a magnet for restaurant patrons. Or that Ulele will provide a destination for walkers, joggers and cyclists on the $4.3 million final leg of the Tampa Riverwalk. Or that the park will be a bellwether for the $7 million restoration of Perry Harvey Sr. Park on the rivers western shore south of Interstate 275.

The Colonial house at 536 Woodridge Ave. is in a convenient location in the Lake Hills neighborhood, near a beach, close to shopping and restaurants along Black Rock Turnpike and not far from the Merritt Parkway.
The house is also within an easy traveling distance to several other local parks including Lake Mohegan recreation area, High Ridge Park and Burroughs Park. The Fairfield Woods Branch Library also is nearby. And the most convenient spot is Lake Hills Beach on Samp Mortar Reservoir, only 500 feet away from the house. The beach is part of Lake Hills Association, a private community association.
For those days when the new residents of this house prefer to lounge around rather than be active they have a property of just under a half an acre where they can sit on the long, covered front porch or in the backyard on the deck or patio. There's always gardening, which is work but also enjoyable. There are some existing flower beds, including a raised bed along the lattice-work base of the front porch and ample room for others.
Although this 2,612-square-foot house was built in 1951, it is newly renovated and boasts a modern gourmet kitchen and updated baths.
The layout was altered to open the living room to the kitchen, which features black granite counters, stainless appliances -- including a six-burner gas-fueled Viking range, a small center island, and hardwood floor. An L-shaped, built-in banquette with Wainscoting provides a separate eat-in area. A granite topped peninsula creates a three-person breakfast bar.
The eat-in area of the kitchen has a door to the raised Trex deck through which the fenced backyard and patio can be accessed. There is a hot tub on the patio. This side of the house also has a mudroom with built-in cabinets and two closets, and a casual entrance to the house from the front porch. Enter the house from the one-car garage into the mudroom.
Rounding out the first floor are the dining room, office and a powder room with a marble basket weave-patterned tile floor.
On the second floor, there are three bedrooms, all with hardwood floors, and a hall bath. The master has its own bath and a walk-in closet. The master bath has a pale green ceramic tile floor, soaking tub, frameless glass shower and double-sink vanity.
There is a large bonus room on the third floor, which has wall-to-wall carpeting. The room goes the width of the house and offers a number of possibilities. It could be used as a fourth bedroom, office, play room, small family room, media space, homework or computer area, art studio, exercise room or storage. Then again, there is ample storage in the unfinished basement.
Actually, the finished walk-up attic/bonus room is large enough to divide it into three distinct spaces so it could have multiple uses. One section has a built-in window seat. There are two skylights to bring in additional natural light.

What would make a homeowner fall in love with their front door? Perhaps a fresh coat of paint, new hardware or a complete replacement. As part of Door Do-Over Week(August 3-9, 2014), Therma-Tru Corp. reached out to several experts for their insights on how homeowners can embrace their entryways.
Colorful Doors
"The color chosen for the front door may seem like a small detail, but it can impact the overall appearance of a home," says Kate Smith, president of Sensational Color. "The front entrance welcomes guests and conveys the warmth, happiness, and comfort that fill the inside of a home. That's why it's important for homeowners to really love their entry door."
Smith, who has authored the e-book, FRESH Color Schemes for Your Home Exterior, suggests that front door colors should reflect the personality of the home's owners.
"Selecting a door color truly reflects a person's style," says Smith. "Trendy colors like teal, fuchsia or orange signal an optimistic attitude and energetic personality. Beige, tan, and earthy colors often are embraced by more grounded, unpretentious people, while homeowners selecting bold reds and bright blues for their entry doors are traditional with a flair for amusing friends and family."
Investing in a New Door
For many homeowners, it's "out with the old and in with the new" when it come to their front doors. Tom Kraeutler, author of My Home, My Money Pit: Your Guide to Every Home Improvement Adventure, replaced his home's 25-year old traditional steel doors with fiberglass doors several years ago.
"Technology in fiberglass doors has jumped light years since we had our old steel doors installed and we were ready to upgrade," says Kraeutler. "The uncanny wood-like appearance of fiberglass doors combined with their energy efficiency and security benefits are incredible.
"For our family, we love the vented sidelite in our new door and use it all the time. It enables us to have a 'screen door' in the front of the home for added ventilation without obstructing the beauty of the front door."
