Rosie Smith with a tile paitning of Rodney Legg earlier this year.
Tom Wright, Reporter Sunday, August 10, 2014 7:40 AM
AN ARTIST has hit out at the thoughtless destruction of a piece of artwork she donated to Weston General Hospital.
To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.
Rosie Smith gave a ceramic tile painting of Weston promenade in 1993 only to now find out by chance it was destroyed last year, despite a contract with the hospital saying it must inform her if any damage was sustained.
It was displayed in the Quattock Unit but during renovation work last year appears to have been discarded.
Mrs Smith raised her concerns with the hospital board, which has since told her it will investigate with the contractors what happened.
She only realised what happened to her painstaking creation, when she paid a visit to the ward recently.
Mrs Smith said: I am hugely distressed at the thoughtless destruction of a piece of artwork that I feel to have been amongst my best.
The lost painting represents over four months of work. Its unbearable to think it ended up in a builders skip.

Glowing recommendations for outdoor lighting
Outdoor lighting is often an afterthought in exterior facelifts and landscape designs, something not remembered until the plants are dug, the deck is built and the house is repainted. If you find yourself in this kind of dark spot, don't despair. Here are some recommendations from lighting professionals:

Visualize your home makeover
Here's how it works: Take a photo or two of the room to which you want to add a new chair, bed or desk. Pick a piece of furniture you want to browse for from a list based on various categories (living room, bedroom and lighting), or narrow your options first from one of the app's four featured brands: CB2, Pier 1 Imports, Capitol Lighting and Ikea. Select an item you like, and it appears superimposed on the photo of your room. You can scale the item to whatever size you'd prefer, drag it to different spots and rotate it.
The price for each item you add to your room displays when you click on it, and a shopping cart icon takes you to a more detailed listing: the name, dimensions, price and a link to buy it or find it in stores. You can save your room as a photo on your phone's camera roll, email it to friends or post it to Facebook. Available free, only for iOS.

When the Rev. Robert Roethemeyer looks across Concordia Theological Seminarys campus, he sees little clumps of four or five trees, sometimes of the same species, amid a broad lawn.
He calls them sacred groves, and indeed, he says, that was how they were seen by the person who meticulously laid out the plantings on the 191-acre campus on the north side of Fort Wayne more than 50 years ago.
He had this idea that you could sit under this sacred grove and in the natural environment and reflect on the questions of life, says Roethemeyer, director of library and information services, has been the unofficial shepherd of the seminarys buildings and grounds for several years.
It bespeaks his vision of what the campus was about, a place for reflection and contemplation of the gifts of God.
The visionary for Concordias grounds was landscape architect Dan Kiley. And today, says Julie Donnell, a founder of non-profit Friends of the Parks, the Boston-born practitioner of Modernism is probably the pre-eminent American landscape architect of the last century.
Yet, she says, most area residents probably dont know that Fort Wayne houses one of Kileys major works. Thats why the Friends are spearheading a stop by a nationally touring exhibit conceived to mark the centennial of Kileysbirth in 1912 and plead for the preservation of his legacy.
The reason we are doing this is, very seriously, that we dont recognize these landscapes, and this is an opportunity for people to understand how beautiful they are and how important they are to our cultural heritage, says Donnell, who is also on the board of the Cultural Landscape Foundation in Washington, D.C., organizer of the exhibit.
Featuring Kileys plan for Concordia among 27 of his more than 1,000 projects commissioned worldwide, the exhibit opens Tuesday at the Jeffrey R. Krull Gallery of the Allen County Public Library. Associated events are a reception and panel discussion with two Kiley experts at the library at 6:30 p.m. Friday and a Concordia campus tour guided by Roethemeyer at 10a.m. Saturday. All are free and open to the public.
The exhibit comes to Fort Wayne after appearing in Indianapolis and Columbus, two other Indiana cities with significant Kiley works. Some of his best-known landscapes include the Air Gardens of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Washington, D.C.s Benjamin Banneker Park and Independence Mall in Philadelphia.
Mark Zelonis, deputy director of environmental and historic preservation at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, steward of a Kiley installation at the Miller House and Garden in Columbus, says Kiley created three-dimensional works of art in which, true to Modernist credo, plantings and structures work seamlessly together.

The Kaiser family's Ho-Ho-Kus home after landscaping. Others are adding fireplaces and even TVs.
In the past few years, members of the Kaiser family have radically transformed the back yard of their Ho-Ho-Kus home, starting with a patio, a deck and a built-in barbecue.
Drainage projects came next, followed by additional plantings, exterior lighting and, finally, a full-sized pool.
The home before the landscaping.
"My husband likes to grill and I like not to cook," said Michelle Kaiser, who said their three teenagers adore the pool and their extended family from the city loves to visit the great outdoors. "As the years have gone by, we've been able to make it into the space that we really love and really can use."
Creating outdoor living spaces is one of the hottest trends in landscape architecture, local and national experts say.
"There is a real focus on the exterior of your home," said Mark Borst, owner of Allendale-based Borst Landscape & Design, which did the project on the Kaiser home. "It's almost like creating a different room for your house. It's about the barbecue, outdoor rooms that have a roof but open sides, a fireplace. There are outdoor TVs with surround sound. Everything you think of normally having inside is creeping outside."
The American Society of Landscape Architects 2014 trends survey found that 92 percent of those professionals surveyed indicated that outdoor kitchens and living areas were somewhat or very popular. Also ranking high were lighting; fire pits or fireplaces; and installed seating, including benches, walls, steps, ledges and boulders.
While good landscaping can improve the value of your home, most people caution that you're not going to get a dollar-for-dollar return.

KUCHING: Wishesland at Jalan Crookshank launched its fund raising campaign for the proposed Wishes Garden for Wishesland project, to provide natural environment as the healing ground for Cerebral Palsy (CP) children.
President of Kuching and Samarahan Division Cerebral Palsy Association (Wishesland) Chi Poh Yung, said the landscape masterplan and details of the Wishes Garden are designed by Earthscape Inhabitant Sdn Bhd and the project would cost RM300,000.
The project would consist of three zones namely Wishes Welcoming and Social Zone, Wishes Sensory and Play Zone, and Wishes Meditation cum Aromatherapy Zone.
There will be an addition to the current five zones at Wishesland, said Chi, while stressing that each zone has its own functions and objectives to help Cerebral Palsy children in their healing process.
Once completed, it would become the first of its kind in the state to provide CP children and members of the public an avenue to relax their mind and body, as well as a place to share good times with their families.
Our aim is to set up an environment surrounded by nature. We want to engage the natural environment of the surroundings, where great natural healing energy forms creating a healing ground for our children and parents.
The core objectives of the Wishes Garden is to create an environment that stimulates and balances our childrens physical, cognitive and emotional growth, as well as to provide a platform for them and their family members to interact and share their feelings before or after the children had gone through the various activities in the centre, he told a press conference yesterday.
He believed that with the inclusion of Wishes Garden in Wishesland, their children will be enlightened and inspired on their paths of recovery.
According to him, the Wishes Welcoming and Social Zone is designed with simplicity concept in mind including wheelchair accessibility requirements.
Simple introduction of Wishesland and relevant information about CP will also be displayed here.
