MADISON, Wis. -
An estimate of damage caused by east Madison building fire was not yet available Saturday but the fire remained in control as firefighters remained at the scene overnight, officials said.
Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth said crews had stayed watch overnight to battle hot spots at the site where an apartment building under construction on Apollo Way caught fire Friday night.
The fire was initially reported by drivers on Interstate 90 who saw smoke and flames at about 7:30 p.m., Wirth said.
Firefighters en route to the site saw smoke and flames come from the back side of the building on the third and fourth floors from a half mile away, according to a release.
Heat from the fire caused fire crews to move back from the building, as heat was melting plastic on the fire engine and breaking window glass.
"Because the building was under construction with no occupants ... crews adopted a defensive strategy to protect the occupied dwellings, Wirth said.
Heat from the fire caused damage to houses nearby, melting siding and cracking windows. Firefighters hosed the buildings with water to cool them and prevent structural damage, according to the fire department.
The blaze was visible from miles away and falling debris caused spot fires across the interstate. The 911 center continued to receive reports of intense heat, heavy smoke, falling debris and grass fires along the interstate and areas of the east side up to an hour after the initial call.
Crews had the fire under control by 9:37 p.m. but remained on Apollo Way to maintain control. Pallets of building materials across the estimated two-acre fire continued to smolder Saturday, fire officials said.

Japan architects make it big on world stage, not with monuments but with a natural sensibility
TOKYO - A new generation of Japanese architects believes the world has fallen out of love with the 20th century steel and concrete skyscraper. They are pushing a human-friendly alternative that some say has roots in the elegant simplicity of the traditional Japanese tea house.
Instead of pursuing monuments that cry out with a message of economic power, these Pritzker Prize-winning architects are scoring success with a uniquely Japanese reinterpretation of the past.
Unlike their predecessors, who modernized Japan with Western-style edifices, they talk of fluidly defining space with screens and sliding doors, innovatively blending with nature, taking advantage of earthy materials and incorporating natural light, all trademarks of Japanese design.
Their sensibility is also a hit abroad, said Erez Golani Solomon, professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo.
"Food and architecture," said Solomon, stressing how the two are Japan's most potent brands. "They are powerful Japan's strongest cultural identity."
___
Kengo Kuma, one of the star architects, finds he is in demand not only in Japan and in the West but also in places such as China, which has tempestuous relations with Tokyo but now boasts a growing fan base for Kuma's works.
Among the major China projects for Kuma are the recent Xinjin Zhi Museum, whose sloping angles and repeated tile motifs are characteristically Kuma, and the Yunnan Sales Center, a sprawling complex of shops, housing and a theatre, where wooden lattice decorates the main structure overlooking a pond.

TOKYO A new generation of Japanese architects is scoring success by reinterpreting the past.
Unlike their predecessors, who modernized Japan with Western-style edifices, they talk of fluidly defining space with screens, innovatively blending with nature, taking advantage of earthy materials and incorporating natural light, all trademarks of Japanese design.
And their sensibility that speaks to a human-oriented yet innovative everyday life is proving a hit abroad, said Erez Golani Solomon, professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo.
Food and architecture, said Solomon, stressing how the two are Japans most potent brands. They are powerful Japans strongest cultural identity.
Kengo Kuma, one of the star architects, finds he is in demand not only in Japan and in the West but also in China.
Among the major China projects for Kuma are the recent Xinjin Zhi Museum, whose sloping angles and repeated tile motifs are characteristically Kuma, and the still ongoing Yunnan Sales Center, a sprawling complex of shops, housing and a theater, where a wooden lattice decorates the main structure overlooking a pond.
He also designs private homes for affluent Chinese who admire Zen philosophy and want to incorporate that stark aesthetic into their daily lives, he said.
Japanese architecture offers warmth and kindness as it is adept in the use of natural light and artisanal craftsmanship, such as bamboo and paper. It is working together like music, to create a comfortable and luxurious spot even in a cramped space, the basic principle of a Japanese tea house, Kuma said.
Its part of our genetic makeup, Kuma told The Associated Press, sitting in his Tokyo studio and pointing with disgust at the vaulting skyscrapers visible from his window.
People all over the world are sick and tired of modern monuments, he said. The desire for the human and the gentle is a backlash to the globalization that brought all these monster skyscrapers.

CULLMAN The quest to build the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame in Cullman has taken a major step forward with the launching of a major fundraising campaign.
Provided that the fundraising effort falls into place, hall of fame board of directors chairman Sammy Lee said a grand opening for the facility could happen in late 2016.
Lee said three major contributors for the campaign to gain construction funds have already been secured. The campaign is reaching across the nation and internationally. In addition to a positive start on fundraising, he also revealed the board is planning to include a retail space of 3,000 or more square feet in the facility.
The intent is to court a major retailer that is involved in fishing and hunting supplies, Lee said. You can pretty well guess who those retailers are. If were successful with that, we feel like the hall of fame will maximize its marketing through one of these retailers in their national advertising campaigns.
The site for the hall of fame is located along County Road 222 on land the City of Cullman owns. Included in the plan is a proposal by city officials to attach a civic center to the hall of fame for conventions and additional tourism opportunities.
In the last two weeks, a major development has stirred renewed excitement for the hall of fame project as the Alabama Department of Transportation signed off on the final papers to clear the way for actual work to begin on constructing an interchange from Interstate 65 directly into CR 222. Local officials are excited by the prospect for additional economic growth in Good Hope and Cullman along the corridor. The hall of fames directors have also reported the interchange was an important factor in their decision to choose Cullman.
We have two major announcements concerning the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, which will be made in Cullman when the board meets there in October, Lee said. One of the announcements will make people say, Ah, that makes sense. The other will cause people to say, Wow.
While declining to elaborate further on the October announcements, Lee said the development that is expected near the hall of fame is already generating interests in the retail and hotel sectors.
I know those involved in local economic development are excited about the potential, and were excited about the opportunities Cullman holds for the hall of fame, Lee said. We remain committed to this attraction being both fun and educational for visitors. We believe it will be a world-class attraction. Bass fishing is worldwide and having the hall of fame in Cullman will be a tremendous plus for everyone.
In a recent interview, Cullman Economic Development Agency director Peggy Smith said the interchange is already opening doors for Good Hope and the entire area on the development front.

SMITHVILLE, GA -
A Smithville Congregation is repairing their pastor's home after he discovered it had mold inside, and some other issues.
Love and support brought more than a dozen members of Smithville Baptist Church out to help make some repairs to their pastor's home. Lance Fendley has been living in his home next door to the church where he's been the pastor for 13 years.
"Just love, just wanting to do God's work and take care of each other, said James Bradfield, church member.
"This is the church property, this is God's property so we've got to get it back where it needs to be, said Lance Fendley, pastor.
His home is overdue for some repairs which has a leaky roof, and a broken air conditioning unit, which is creating mold in the walls.
"This house is on a low part, water comes down and it sits in these receptacles and it rusts them off, said Fendley. It's just stuff over time that you have to look at, you have to pay attention too."
They're putting in new insulation and replacing flooring. James Bradfield says he doesn't mind getting dirty for his pastor. He says Pastor Fendley has done a lot for him in the last 3 and a half years.
"He's always helping other people, whether they come to his church or not, said Bradfield.
Fendley says his church is all about helping others, and this is just another example of how they do that.
