20 pest control companies warned for violations

    - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dubai: Twenty warnings have been issued to pest control companies, following inspections of 278 properties 55 of which were residential compounds.

Dubai Municipality recently issued the fines to erring companies for causing minor injuries while doing pest control in affected areas.

Eng Hesham Abdul Rahman, head of the Pest Control Section at Dubai Municipality, said the civic body has inspected residential compounds and other places to monitor and combat insect infestation in those areas since the beginning of the year.

Our surveys prove that the pest control operations are generally highly efficient and the companies that currently carry out the work are doing their job in the best way in line with the constant monitoring by Dubai Municipality to protect public health in the emirate of Dubai, he said.

He said these insects, particularly mosquitoes, thrive in stagnant water. This often occurs in villas whose owners leave their swimming pools and fountains unattended for a long time when they are away from home.

The Local Order No 11 of 2003 gives the municipality the authority to monitor and control all pest control operations in the emirate of Dubai in order to maintain public health and safety, he said.

Decaturs Cooks Pest Control unveils new $15M plan for new natural science museum

    - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) Cooks Pest Control announced in Januaryit would spend $7 million revamping the Cook Museum of Natural Science in downtown Decatur.

Officials said the expanded attraction would lure up to 200,000 visitors within its first year of operation and bring new life to a vacant auto parts store in the heart of the River City.

Since Januaryplans for the 34-year-old natural science facility have changed, big time.

Cooks said Thursday it has come up with a new plan for themuseumbased on attendance projections. The estimated cost for expanding the nonprofit organization is now $15 million, up from $10 million eight months ago.

Its been a family legacy and a student filed trip staple in the tri-county area for decades, but now the museum is on the move.

My grandfather passed away with pancreatic cancer five-and-a-half years ago and as a family we had to decide what we wanted the Cook Museum to be, explains museum board president, Brian Cook.

What started as a small insect collection turned veritable wildlife menagerie will now expand to exciting new heights.

Cooks now plans to tear down the existing museum on 133 Fourth Ave. N.E. and construct a 57,000-square-foot multi-level building on the former site of the Car Quest Auto Parts building at Lee Street and Fourth Avenue.

The new facility will also have 5,000 square feet of traveling exhibit space.

The current museum operates on more of a look and see model.

Experts busy keeping up with calls to get rid of wasp nests

    - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cumbrian pest control firms have seen double the number of call outs to tackle wasps nests this summer.

Homeowners desperate to rid their homes and gardens of the black and yellow peril have kept pest controllers busy across the county.

Cumbria Pest and Hygiene Services say call outs to blitz the nests have risen by 100 per cent compared to last year.

Karen Law, of the Cockermouth-based firm, said: Weve seen on average between 15 and 20 wasps nests per week this summer. Normally its seven to 10.

Two successive mild winters and a warm summer could be to blame for an increase in the insects according to experts.

But spells of hot weather this summer have also brought people out into the sunshine.

Mrs Law said: People are having a nice barbecue in the garden and they notice a massive wasps nest.

The size of wasps nests being reported has also increased this year.

Native plants offer minimum maintenance, maximum benefits | Gardening

    - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Is there such a thing as a low-maintenance garden?

Some landscapers and horticulturists will tell you no every garden needs maintenance of some kind.

For the most part, they are right.

From personal experience, I can tell you there are high-maintenance and lower-maintenance gardens. It's all about plant choice right plant for right space and giving plants room to grow without crowding.

It's also about the plant types you select. Plants that need constant pruning to keep them sized and shaped and plants that dislike temperature and soil changes have no place in a low-maintenance garden.

For me, native plants especially in my bees, butterflies and birds garden are the way to go.

Landscape designer Denise Greene agrees, and shows and tells you how to best to create a minimum-care garden that attracts and feeds feed bees, butterflies and birds at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center, Centerville Road, James City County. The program is free and open to the public. A $5 donation is suggested for each person.

"Low maintenance means a minimum amount of input is required to keep the plants in the garden healthy and growing," says Greene. She grows 130-140 plants native to the Mid-Atlantic region at Sassafras Farm, a nursery she started in 1997 at her home in Gloucester County. She sells plants at the Williamsburg Farmers Market many weekends.

"The reason natives can be low maintenance is because they are adapted to the specific growing conditions of the site. Of course, you have to know what the site conditions are and which plants are adapted to those conditions. Just because a plant is native doesn't mean it will do well in any conditions, but it will thrive if you plant it in the right place."

Gardening: July garden showcases the color purple – Sat, 09 Aug 2014 PST

    - August 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Connie Osiers favorite color is purple. How do I know? It was pretty obvious when I drove up to her South Hill home for this interview for the July Garden of the Month sponsored by the Inland EmpireGardeners.

Her front yard was a sight for sore, heat-stressed eyes. Velvety purple petunias, pink and white Stargazer lilies and light purple zinnias lined the walk to the dark blue front door. The lilies fragrance added to the sensual treat. A magnificent purple-leaved laceleaf Japanese maple draped over a wall at the foot of the sidewalk. Container plantings of mixed purple

Container plantings of mixed purple annuals and chartreuse sweet potato vine adorned the front step and border beds. Below a small sitting area by the front door are large Endless Summer hydrangeas that rounded out the color theme. More on themlater.

Osier and her family have lived in their 1939 house for 25 years. We basically had to demo the yard in the beginning and start from scratch, she said. Osier helped the process along by taking landscape design classes at Spokane Community College which helped sharpen her skills for creating an exciting series of spaces starting with her entrance garden through to her backyard full of fruit trees, vegetables andchickens.

The space along the east side of the house is planted with aspen, alpine firs and wildflowers that combine to make you feel as if you are walking along a North Idaho trail. This garden was created after a major water line break meant everything including a large pine had to go. The pine was rotten and hanging over the neighbors irreplaceable tile roof, shesaid.

The project would consist of three zones namely Wishes Welcoming and Social Zone, Wishes Sensory and Play Zone, and Wishes Meditation cum Aromatherapy Zone.

There will be an addition to the current five zones at Wishesland, said Chi, while stressing that each zone has its own functions and objectives to help Cerebral Palsy children in their healing process.

Our aim is to set up an environment surrounded by nature. We want to engage the natural environment of the surroundings, where great natural healing energy forms creating a healing ground for our children and parents.

The core objectives of the Wishes Garden is to create an environment that stimulates and balances our childrens physical, cognitive and emotional growth, as well as to provide a platform for them and their family members to interact and share their feelings before or after the children had gone through the various activities in the centre, he told a press conference yesterday.

He believed that with the inclusion of Wishes Garden in Wishesland, their children will be enlightened and inspired on their paths of recovery.
