Home Surveillance A Valuable Resource For Police

RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - Chances are, either you or someone you know has a home security systemand if your home is in Richardson, police there want to know, too.

This is strictly a voluntary program, says Crime Prevention Officer Mike Wieczorek. We put you on a list of contacts, and then when something happens, we ask you to look into your system, review your footage, and then recontact us with anything you find.

With home surveillance systems dropping in price in recent years, the security cameras have become more common serving up gotcha moments at the push of a button: whether thats a delivery man behaving badly, or a crook caught in the act.

And Richardson homeowner Leo Pease knows that well. This lady come out the house and she was crying, says Pease, And I said, well, Ill go back and check my camera and thats when I found it.

Sure enough, Peases surveillance video helped catch a burglar and recover the neighbors belongings. And he wasnt alone. Home security video was showing up so often in police investigations, that crime prevention officers proposed putting together a database of homeowners who might have video to share.

Now, they can pull up a map of the city and they can see plotted on the map everywhere that we have homes with video surveillance, so its become a great tool, says Officer Wieczorek.

Signing up is simple. Just head to the Richardson police website, click on Crime Prevention and then navigate to Neighborhood Video Crime Watch.

Thats why they call me all the time, says Pease with a chuckle, Im on their list. And then with a thoughtful pause, Its a good list to be on.

Powered by the sun, GeckoEye security cam can be placed anywhere in your home or car

    - August 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The thing about surveillance cameras is that they need continuous power to keep recording. Being that they need to be plugged in, it limits you in where you can place the camera. The GeckoEye is a new concept in that it can be charged through solar power, and that, combined with its small, 1.7-inch hockey puck of a body, opens up many new places where you can stick a security cam. That means you can easily move it around the house, or use it inside a car as a dash cam. The GeckoEye is currently seeking funding via Indiegogo, with a goal of $100,000.

The camera is actually part of a two-component system that includes a base unit. With support for up to three camera modules, the GeckoEye Station communicates with them over direct Wi-Fi; the station also connects to your home network over Wi-Fi. Unlike the camera, however, the base unit must be powered the traditional way, but it has high-capacity battery (up to 240 hours) that makes it mobile. The station is where video is encoded and transmitted to a cloud-based storage (50GB included), although it also has 128GB of built-in memory. Users can access the station with a companion smartphone app (iOS, Android, Blackberry, Nokia [which we assume means Windows Mobile], or via Web browser) from anywhere, and view live-view footage or archived video recorder earlier.

If you plan to use it in a car while driving, obviously the camera and base wont have access to a Wi-Fi network. For those situations, you can either access the recorded footage later or pop in a SIM card so that its connected to a cellular network; the base unit contains a GSM slot. This setup also lets you take it along on vacation, the office, a party, or wherever you think you might need a surveillance cam.

As for the camera unit itself, The GeckoEye Cam is made out of either polycarbonate or aluminum, depending on the model you choose. Interestingly, there are two wide-angle HD cameras, one on each side. So, for example, it can record activity inside and outside a room, when stuck on a window, or record the road and activity inside a car while driving. Besides motion detection, the camera has GPS for geotagging purposes (you can pinpoint the exact location of a car accident, for example, should you unfortunately find yourself in one) and a microphone to capture audio. The solar-charged battery takes three hours to fill up. The camera has motion detection and can send you alerts via e-mail or text.

We would have liked to see an all-in-one solution instead of this two-component approach, but we can see the benefits. One, it supports multiple cameras, and, two, in case your camera gets lost or stolen, you technically still have the base unit that contains all the footage, and we imagine it should be easy to replace. For storage, the GeckoEye takes the best of both Dropcam and the recent Samsung SmartCam HD Pro we reviewed. You get local storage, but you also get a secondary archive in the cloud. Were not sure if the GeckoEye is a suitable as a complete home security solution, but its useful for keeping tabs on pets, the elderly, babysitter, or any activity inside and outside the home.Being that the GeckoEye is in its prototype/design stage, we cant tell how well the GeckoEye will work, based on the specs, but its an interesting concept in home camera surveillance. As of this writing, the company, which is based in Latvia, has raised only two percent of its goal, although theres still 25 days left.

Elite Heating Cooling & Plumbing Provides Dependable Air Conditioning Repair During the Sweltering Summer Heat

    - August 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August 09, 2014

Anyone watching the local weather forecast understands the importance of having functional air conditioning units in their homes and businesses. With temperatures frequently climbing to well over 108 degrees Fahrenheit, Las Vegas residents are frequently seeking relief from the heat, which can put additional strain on central and room cooling systems and the electrical grid. Elite AC Repair Services is proud to offer their $25 air conditioning service for Las Vegas area residents.

Although air conditioners are designed to deal with (and combat) high temperatures, prolonged periods of unusually high temperatures and/or humidity sometimes overload the electrical and mechanical components of the most well-maintained units. However, AC repair issues also arise when owners forget to perform regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing filters. This results in complications such as shutdowns, leaks, and reduced performance. Some residents are tempted to avoid regular maintenance over cost concerns, but thanks to Elite AC Repair Services, this is no longer an issue in Las Vegas.

Air conditioning units often break down at the hottest times of the summer, when homeowners need them to perform properly. The result is a rapidly rising indoor temperature, posing significant health risks to everyone inside. Especially affected by excessive temperatures are pets, young children, and the elderly. Residents suffering from such malfunctions can turn to Elite AC Repair Services, the areas premier air conditioning repair company, to address these issues quickly and effectively.

Quality air conditioning repair companies in Las Vegas are available around the clock to assist customers whenever their cooling systems stop working properly. At Elite AC Repair Services, their highly trained professionals have the experience and skill to detect common causes of air conditioning system malfunctions, including temperature sensor damage, drainage problems due to broken condensation pumps, dirty or clogged filters, and refrigerant leaks. Once they have identified the cause of the problem, they immediately repair the damage and restore air conditioner functioning.

According to the professionals at Elite AC Repair Services, Keeping air conditioning units functioning effectively and efficiently is a top priority for us and for our customers. Las Vegas citizens know us as the Home of the $25 Air Conditioner Service Call, and were proud of that distinction. It means we are able to help people of all income levels keep their homes cool and comfortable all summer long.

When it comes to choosing the right AC repair company in Las Vegas, residents look for businesses that provide a wide array of skills and services at prices within their household budgets. Air conditioner repair technicians should be fully licensed, bonded, and insured in addition to providing around-the-clock service to respond to the urgent needs of their customers.

THE GARDEN SCENE: Prime time for fall lawn maintenance

    - August 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Although August usually brings hot, dry days that remind us that summer is not yet over, this month is a very good time to begin thinking about fall maintenance of your lawn. Labor Day weekend is right around the corner and typically signifies the start of fall activities designed to help ensure a lush, healthy lawn, including a minimum of pest issues, for the coming year. Maintenance activities encompass three primary practices.

Aeration involves pulling plugs of soil to open the surface for better nutrient and water movement. Crumble the plugs and let the soil fall loosely into the holes. This procedure helps reduce thatch as well as compacted soil throughout the yard. Aeration is an excellent frontrunner to fertilizing since it allows the nutrients in fertilizers to move more readily into the root zone of your lawn. Aeration helps cool season grasses recover from summer stress and vastly improves grass density and color.

Aeration equipment is available from local rental stores. Keep in mind that machines differ in design. Some aerators use spoon tines to pull soil plugs three to four inches deep on three- to four-inch centers and are considered by lawn care authorities to do an excellent job. However, aerators that force hollow tines into the soil are deemed even better. Regardless of the type of aerating equipment used, any amount of aeration of the soil is better than none.

Over-seeding is the practice of spreading additional grass seed to an established lawn. Use of a power rake prior to over-seeding is recommended to improve contact with the soil, which in turn improves seed germination. Even if your entire lawn does not require reseeding, power raking the small areas where the grass is sparse or completely gone is worth the effort for optimum results. In some instances it may be appropriate to renovate the entire lawn. If so, spraying with an effective weed and grass killer in August will control existing vegetation until the area can be power raked in early September.

Numerous over-the-counter seed products are available to homeowners including both cool-season and warm-season grasses. However, the most prevalent for this part of Missouri are cool-season grasses which are primarily limited to three options: (1) turf-type tall fescue, (2) Kentucky bluegrass, and (3) a blend of the two with a ratio of 90 percent fescue to 10 percent blue grass recommended.

Fescues grow well in full sun to partial shade, develop deeper roots, and thus generally require less water. The Kentucky bluegrasses provide deep color and finer texture. A combination of the two offers the strengths of each while masking the weaknesses of the other. Be wary of any blend that includes 20 percent or more ryegrass; ryegrasses are neither heat nor drought tolerant and they are susceptible to many turf grass diseases.

Before applying any type of fertilizer, begin with a soil test to determine the needs, if any, of the soil in your lawn. Soil pH is important because it affects the availability of nutrients to the grass. Results of a soil test will report nutrient levels, soil pH, and information about lime requirements. Soil test kits with instructions are available at your Pettis County Extension Office.

A wide variety of fertilizers are available including both organic and inorganic types. Look for fertilizers with a good balance of N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) and with slow-release nitrogen. Fertilizer released into the soil over a longer period of time requires fewer applications and allows the grasses more time to efficiently utilize the nutrients.

For cool-season grasses (not warm-season grasses such as zoysia or Bermuda) apply 2.5 to 3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Spread the total pounds over two or three applications throughout the fall. For example, after aeration and over-seeding, apply one pound of nitrogen (per 1,000 square feet) in early to mid-September, a second pound in October, and the third pound in November.

These fall practices for lawn maintenance offer a deeper root system and a significant improvement in weed control throughout the following season. Call the Master Gardener Hotline at 827-0519 or contact your local Extension Office if you have questions about the health and beauty of your lawn.
