Smart lighting requires that either the wiring and infrastructure or the bulbs themselves are able to be connected to the web. Philips hue, LIFX and INSTEON bulbs all take this latter approach, but buying new smart bulbs can be expensive. Emberlight is an adapter designed to make any bulb smart without the expense.
Like Spark, the Emberlight sits between a light fitting and a bulb and connects to the user's Wi-Fi network to allow the remote control of the light from a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
However, unlike Spark, which missed its crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter leaving the company to focus on providing an open-source operating system for the Internet of Things, the Emberlight has been more successful. The device has already hit its Kickstarter target with another month left to go.
Installation of the Emberlight adapter is simply a case of screwing it into a light fitting as you would a bulb. The bulb then screws into the adapter. Users need then only pull up the Emberlight mobile app and connect the device to their home Wi-Fi network.
Once the Emberlight adapter is set up, it is possible to manually raise and lower the brightness of a bulb, set bulbs to fade up or down at certain times, set and load lighting mood presets, have lights automatically come on when you are within a certain distance and control lights at home when you're elsewhere. The company also suggests that users can save energy by slightly reducing the brightness of lights throughout their home and notifications will tell a user if they have left any on.
Emberlight works with incandescent, halogen, dimmable CFL and dimmable LED bulbs. The device is designed for use with Edison screw bulbs, although adapters for bayonet bulbs are available. Emberlight is also planning to release actual bayonet versions of the device for counties where this format is used.
Pledges for the Kickstarter campaign start at US$49 in order to receive an Emberlight, assuming all goes to plan with their production.
The Emberlight video pitch can be viewed below.

On the heels of Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft has released the latest update to its mobile OS. Currently available to download for users as part of the free-to-join Preview for Developers program, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 includes some minor but important enhancements. Here's a look at what to expect.
Microsoft has said that the update will roll out to consumers with devices running Windows Phone 8.1 in the coming months, but we've already taken it for a spin.
Android and iOS devices have had the ability to group apps together by creating folders for several years now and Windows Phone is finally joining the party, but with a bit of a twist. The folders continue with Microsoft's live tile approach, so you will see updates from each app you put in a folder.
Putting apps in folders is just like adding apps to create folders in iOS and (some) Android launchers. Just tap and drag an app to another app to create a folder and then you'll be able to name it. The folder will display a grid of mini app icons, and when you tap it, you can easily access the app you want. You can also resize the app tiles inside the folder once it's expanded. For example, in the screenshot below I created a music folder and you can see both the live tile view and the larger view once the live tile is opened.
Apps Corner is a restricted access mode that's designed to provide access to selected apps on your phone if you let someone borrow it. The person who borrows your phone will get a customized Start screen with access to only the apps you selected. This is a good solution for businesses and can work as a sort of kiosk mode to prevent users from accessing certain functions. It's also similar to another Windows Phone feature called Kids Corner that gives your children access to only specific games and apps you choose. To use it go to Settings > apps corner and tap Apps. Then select the apps you want to be available.
To get out of Apps Corner, hold the power button down for about a second and you'll see the following screen. You can either power the phone off or swipe to the right to exit Apps Corner. Make sure you have a Lock Screen password set, because the other person using the phone has access to this too. But they will need your code to get out of it.
Xbox Music has improved quite a bit across all platforms over the past few years. Unfortunately, when Windows 8.1 was launched, it was painfully slow and crashed a lot. Microsoft heard the user complaints and admitted the app was broken. Now with the Windows Phone 8.1 update, you should notice several improvements and bug fixes, along with a snappier interface. The company also said new features will be added regularly, with "now playing" on the music live tile set to appear in the not-too-distant future.
Now when you have the Windows Store tile set to the medium size, it will be "live" and display new apps, recommendations, the app of the day and more. The screenshot below shows two different games that are being featured via the Store's live tile. While this isn't a huge deal, it is further evidence that Microsoft is tightening up its mobile OS.
Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 allows you to select multiple SMS messages to delete or forward all in one action. It will be available in built-in apps as well as more places like the Phone app call log. You can get to it in a messaging app by selecting more options, tapping "select messages" and checking the ones you want to delete or forward on.
if you don't want to wait for your carrier to send it your way, you too can take the update for a spin right now.

The citys code enforcement office has been at odds with Pilgrim Baptist Church over a new addition the city claims requires the church to also install a sprinkler system in the existing building in order to comply with Newark code.
Members of the church, founded in 1913 and located on Barksdale Road, believe the code is being incorrectly interpreted by city officials and argue that the two buildings are separate, distinct structures.
It was by design that these be two separate buildings, Pastor Lonnie Rector said.
On Tuesday, both parties presented their cases to the Board of Building Appeals with City Solicitor Bruce Herron and Tim Poole, code enforcement officer, arguing in favor of the city, and James A. Landon, an attorney from Morris James, LLP, representing the church.
Three out of the six members of the board were present at the hearing, including Terrance Haskins, Jeff Bergstrom and Sal Sedita.
Work began last year on the two-story, 17,000-square-foot addition to the back of the church for a fellowship hall and additional meeting rooms, classrooms and kitchen, but on Feb. 5, a month before completion, the church received a letter from Planning Director Maureen Feeney Roser stating that sprinklers must be installed in the existing portion of the building.
Feeney Roser explained that the sprinklers needed to be installed before she could issue a Certificate of Occupancy for the addition and gave the church 30 days to comply.
However, on Tuesday, Landon argued that the church is not financially prepared to install the sprinklers and should not be required to do so in 30 days, a time frame he described as impossible.
He added that the church would be unable to hold regular services if forced to install sprinklers in the existing building, as the worship room would be under construction.
Poole explained to the board that the existing church shares load-bearing elements with the new area, which deems it not only an addition, but also a renovation, and triggers the automatic sprinklering requirement. He also noted that the two buildings are connected by a hallway.

GEORGETOWN, Colo. (CBS4) Its one of the biggest concerns in Colorados highway system what if the EisenhowerJohnson Memorial Tunnels had to be closed and repaired? The state is moving one step closer to making sure that doesnt happen by installing a new fire suppression system that could also likely save lives.
Its going to be the greatest improvement to tunnel since initial construction, CDOT Project Manager Raelene Shelly said.
For the past 40 years there has been one main source for putting out fires at the tunnel.
We have 52 employees here at the tunnel that are all trained in basic firefighting skills, Shelly said.
While thats worked in the past, the Colorado Department of Transportation has received a total of $25 million from the federal and state governments to make the tunnel safer.
They currently run hurricane force winds through there if theres ever a fire, but what were looking at getting the funding to install is a sprinkler system, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis said.
We have had nine significant fires inside the tunnel and two of them have caused damage, said. Our system will actually reduce damage to the tunnels and keep them open for the public.
There was an RV that caught fire in the tunnel in the year 2000 and a number of other close calls. But now the system design has been picked and a contractor is ready to start next year.
Theres a linear heat detector on the ceiling of the roadway and it will detect heat which will send a signal to the control room. An operator will decide whether or not theres a fire, Shelly said.
Sprinklers will go through ventilation already in place.
