Photo by Cliff Buchan Terry Tolzmann is the man in charge at Tolzmann Painting. He is carrying on the tradition started by his father, Ray Tolzmann, and his grandfather, August Tolzmann. Here, he paints the fascia board on a boathouse on Manitou Island in White Bear Lake.
When it comes to painting as a profession, some are cut out for it; others are not.
Around Forest Lake and Wyoming, the Tolzmann family is now in its fourth generation of family members who have made their living by painting and paper hanging. Its a family tradition that goes back more than 100 years.
Officially, 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the familys involvement in the trade, but it probably started even earlier, said cousins Terry Tolzmann and Brian Tolzmann. Records from residential directors published in St. Paul in 1905 lists August Tolzmann, their grandfather, as a painter and paper hanger.
Family history also speculates that August Tolzmann was working in the profession, possibly as early as 1900 in St. Paul when he was 19.
No matter the number of years, it is clear painting is in the Tolzmanns blood and in particular in Terry Tolzmanns blood. He is the owner and operator of Tolzmann Painting today, a continuation of the business founded by his grandfather. It has been a business that has seen a host of Tolzmann men joining the ranks, but on scales that differ widely.
An early start
It was an early start in the business for Terry Tolzmann, the son of Ray Tolzmann. Terry was a sophomore in high school here in 1972 when he first took his turn with a paint brush.
He recalls his fathers command clearly to this day: Come on, schools out. You are coming with me, Ray Tolzmann barked to his son.
It was OK with me, Terry said. It was work. I helped him every summer after that.

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins told metro area residents today they stand a better chance of getting clean tap water for the rest of the 2014 algae season if they become more selective about how they use it.
I believe this community will fortify this [water] system through more conservation, he told reporters inside One Government Center.
MAYORS STATEMENT: Residents urged to conserve, reduce usage
Residents are asked to refrain from watering their lawns or irrigating fields. They are asked to stop washing their cars at home. They also should take shorter showers, wash only full loads of laundry and dishes, and operate washing machines and dishwashers on their most energy-efficient modes.
In other words, they need to keep two simple words in mind: conserve water.
Doing so, according to Mr. Collins and other city officials, will reduce the odds of the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant from being stressed.
Less demand means a slower flow rate and the ability for chemicals used to neutralize algae to work as water makes its way through the citys multi-staged treatment system.
It gives chemicals more time to take effect and allows the plant to produce better water, Ed Moore, the citys public utilities director, said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 7, 2014 ? Two projects designed in part by University of Virginia faculty members are among the 11 finalists for a major international landscape architecture prize.
Organizers of the eighth Rosa Barba International Landscape Architecture Biennale Prize, to be awarded next month in Barcelona, last month recognized three UVA School of Architecture faculty members ? Iaki Alday, Margarita Jover andTeresa Gal-Izard ? as outstanding designers.
The competition jury ? chaired by renowned Dutch landscape architect Michel Van Gessel, and including members from Australia, Spain and the United States ? selected the 11 finalists from among landscape architecture projects completed in the last five years by some of the leading architectural firms from nine countries.
Alday, Quesada Professor and chair of the Department of Architecture, and Jover, a lecturer in that department, along with their firm Alday-Jover, were honored for their landscape architecture design of The Park of the Meander of Aranzadi in Pamplona, Spain.
Gal-Izard, associate professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, contributed to a team that worked on another project in Spain, serving as a landscape designer and agricultural engineer with Batlle & Roig Architects, who designed and managed the reclamation of the Val d?en Joan landfill in Barcelona.
Other nominees for the prize include works located in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Some of the projects are already widely known, such as the High Line and Queens Plaza in New York and Quinli Park in China.
The Rosa Barba International Landscape Architecture Biennale exhibition and symposium opens Sept. 25 in Barcelona. The finalists will lecture on their work, and the winner will be announced during the three-day symposium.
Alday-Jover?s Aranzadi Park ? built into the meander, or bend, of the Arga River ? was recognized as a public space of extraordinary quality that balances the relationship of the river, local residents and the area?s agricultural heritage in a radically innovative way.
The park?s vegetation grows with the help of the river, while its gardens serve as orchards to boost local food production. The park?s spaces function as both contemplative and educational areas for local citizens.
The nomination recognizes a park that is still young, but that incorporates the historic vegetable gardens in the meander, or river?s bend. The park has been heavily tested through the highest flood in Pamplona?s history.

Second Carmel Valley gardener earns honorable mention in same competition
By Karen Billing
Two Carmel Valley gardeners have shown that being water-wise and having drought-tolerant landscaping dont have to mean ugly.
Amelia Lima's water-wise front yard won first place.
Carmel Valleys Amelia Lima was named the winner of the California Friendly Conservation Landscape Contest sponsored by the city of San Diegos water conservation program and public utilities department, while another Carmel Valley resident, Nancy Dalton, received an honorable mention.
Both womens gardens are alive with more than just rocks and a couple of cactuses they are colorful, lush and full of visual interest.
Im very concerned about water in our climate, as everyone should be, said Lima, a landscape horticulturist who owns her own landscaping company.
Lima said between 50 and 60 percent of all water in Southern California is used outdoors and, for the most part, people overwater their gardens. She said many people mistakenly think if a plant is not doing well, its because it lacks water. Her biggest tip is instead of dousing those struggling plants with more water, to find plants that actually want to live in this unique environment.
A dramatic sweep of river rocks in Nancy Dalton's garden gives the illusion of water flowing past plants.
Lima said that San Diego is a Mediterranean climate and only four other regions of the world share that climate the Mediterranean basin, South Africa, Australia and Chile.
