The San Diego Padres could finally be removing the term "Petcoed" from the vocabulary of National League hitters.

Padres interim CEO Tom Garfinkel said Tuesday the Padres are officially considering moving in the fences at Petco Park.

"We're open-minded and we're seriously considering it," said Garfinkel. "I do believe it is too extreme right now. It will still be a pitcher's ballpark. But a hitter should be rewarded if he crushes it. And if a team is down 4-0, they should feel there is some hope. It's just too extreme."

Garfinkel's comments Tuesday represent a major change by the Padres, who fell to the Nationals 3-1 Tuesday.

Former CEO Jeff Moorad vowed the outfield dimensions at Petco Park would not be altered as long as he controlled the club. But Moorad resigned as CEO last month after the minority group he led was rebuffed by Major League Baseball in its attempts to be approved as the Padres owners.

Garfinkel said the Padres have already been in contact with MLB about the protocol to be followed for shortening the fences -- primarily in right field and right-center.

"We'd have to submit plans by the end of the season," said Garfinkel, who said the Padres have not decided on the distance that the fences would be shortened. "I don't think a final decision needs to be made until October.

"There are a lot of things to consider. We can't change the air and the atmospheric conditions. This ballpark plays different at night than it does during the day. It plays different in the spring than it does in late summer. We have to get it right. We are studying everything. There are still going to be some nights when the conditions would still be such that it's going to be hard to hit a homer no matter what the distance is to the fences.

"But a solidly hit ball should be rewarded. Baseball is a match between the pitcher and the hitter. We've seen a number of times here where the hitter wins that battle and gets nothing to show for it. It should play fair. Four runs should not be an impossible deficit to overcome."

There have been at least two previous studies made on shortening the fences at Petco Park.

Bright spark, perfectionist and role model

Hard work and persistence has paid off for Laser Electrical Bunbury employee Scott Bryant, who was last week named Master Electricians Australia WA Apprentice of the Year.

Mr Bryant recently finished his apprenticeship with the company and was nominated by his employers for the prestigious award.

Having started with the company in its humble beginnings, Mr Bryant is proud to have grown with the company.

Mr Bryant said he had wanted to be an electrician for a long time.

I stuck it out and did Year 11 and 12 but then decided I did not want to go to university, he said.

It took me a year to find an apprenticeship and then I found one at Laser Electrical.

I have seen the business grow which was good. We had few jobs when we started and now we struggle to keep up with the work its great.

Mr Bryant hopes to continue improving as an electrician, seeking work in the States north and doing his Certificate IV in Instrumentation which would allow him to do more industrial work.

Laser Electrical Bunbury general manager Michelle Griffiths said Mr Bryant was the companys first employee and he had a big future.

With a mission to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership, two Habitat for Humanity duplexes are being constructed on the north side of Fairview.

Jim Haslip, Site Supervisor (and a carpenter himself), said construction is proceeding step by step, in an alternating line of work between contractors and volunteers.

Two buildings will house two 1080 ft. duplexes, with two bedrooms (the master will have a half bath), and the usual bathroom, kitchen, living room and laundry room (with a 10ft. x 10 ft deck onside).

Therell be room for two bedrooms downstairs and the roughing has been done for future development of a bathroom; all of which will be completed, depending on the size of the family who will live there.

The basement will also have a layer of drywall installed downstairs.

Haslip emphasized, The thing about Habitat for Humanity is its not a low income rental thing.

We build homes to sell to people. The whole program is designed to assist people who are paying too large a portion of their income on rent.

Theyre not able to provide a down payment; theres not (much) money left after all those bills.

As a down payment, we get our partner families (those selected for the new homes) to volunteer for 500 hours to help with the construction of (the home).

After families move in, the monthly payments are calculated at 25% of their yearly income and the mortgage rate is zero percent.

Columbus City Council voted on Wednesday, July 23 to move ahead on new paving of gravel roads in two areas this fall after public hearings were held for neighbors to speak.

The residents who spoke from one of the neighborhoods were all in favor of getting paved roads along with being billed thousands of dollars in assessments. Vocal neighbors from the other area under review by the council, however, were decidedly split whether asphalt roads and higher costs would be a good trade-off.

Four council members, with Mayor Dave Povolny absent, first opened discussion on a neighborhood involving 33 lots that could be billed on 177th Lane, 178th Lane and Heidelberg Street.

An estimated month of work, ending in mid-October, would end with topping those roads with 3 inches of asphalt. City Engineer Larry Bohrer projected the neighborhoods cost at $270,100 for a price per lot of $8,185.

Residents speak

Doug Palmer, a resident who said he has lived on 177th Lane since 1987, introduced himself as the neighbor who began a petition to work with the city on paving in the neighborhood.

I am really, really glad to see it at this stage right now, Palmer said. I think it is long overdue to have this (these roads) updated.

Most lots in the other area where the city is considering road paving this year, on Bender Street and 184th Avenue, would be assessed $8,581 per lot based on the engineers total estimate of $188,790.
