Its what many would consider the stuff of their worst nightmares - dangling from the 48th floor of a 250-metre-high skyscraper.
This was how Monday morning started for two Austrian high-rise window cleaners, when their window-cleaning platform slipped to a perilous angle that left them hanging 144 metres above the ground.

As the two men cleaned the undulating glass of the recently opened DC Tower in Vienna - Austria's tallest building - their platform stalled and dropped to a 45 degree angle.
The pair clung to the platform in strong winds while they waited for the Viennese fire department to rescue them.
A crew of 30 firefighters stabilised the platform to stop it from slipping any further. One cleaner escaped the ordeal unharmed and the other was treated for shock.
Daniel Knight, 26, a Sydney high-rise window cleaner, said he had never heard of anything similar happening in Australia.
The gear is certified by routine checks through several outsourced companies, he said.
He sympathised with the plight of the two Austrian window cleaners.
Theres not really much you can do, youd just have to hold on, he said.

A regular day at work turned into a nightmare ordeal for two window cleaners who were left dangling precariously on the side of a 250m (820ft) skyscraper.
The two men were cleaning windows on the 48th floor of the DC Tower in Vienna, Austria, when their platform stalled and slipped to a 45 degree angle.
These dramatic images show one of the pair clinging to the side of the window-cleaning cradle awaiting help.
They were stranded more than 144m (470ft) above the ground before they were rescued from the skyscraper, which is Austrias tallest building.
A crowd gathered below the tower as around 30 firefighters secured the cradle with extra cables to prevent it from slipping further in strong winds.
Both men escaped the ordeal unharmed after being directed to a ventilation shaft by emergency responders. One of them was treated for shock.
It was unclear from local reports how long the men were left stranded for.
DC Tower 1 was officially opened in February after several delays in construction, while a second tower, also designed by French architect Dominique Perrault, is currently under construction.

EMERYVILLE -- When Jeff Silver decided to redo the heating and hot water systems in his Emeryville home, the $32,000 price tag seemed way out of reach.
But through CaliforniaFIRST, a new state-sponsored program for energy efficiency financing that went live Tuesday in 17 counties, Silver was able to buy and install the equipment he needed with no money down and tack the payments on to his yearly property taxes with payments spread out over 15 years.
In the Bay Area, the program is now available in Alameda, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. Contra Costa County should join by the end of the year.
CaliforniaFIRST allowed him to buy and install two natural gas heaters, one for his upstairs tenants and one for his unit, and an on-demand water heater. Financing can be extended to 20 years.
"I couldn't have come up with $32,000," said Silver, who was part of an earlier pilot program, as officials announced the formal launch of CaliforniaFIRST at his home. "There was one heater for both units in this house and the temperature was controlled by the tenant upstairs, so now we each have our own heater. This is great. It allowed me to do all the upgrades at once."
The new program is overseen by a consortium of local governments and financed by Renewable Funding of Oakland, which has $300 million to lend to homeowners at rates slightly less than a home-equity loan, or about 7 percent a year, said Cisco DeVries, CEO and co-founder of Renewable Funding, the financing company that manages CaliforniaFIRST.
A homeowner needs a minimum of $5,000 in projects to get financing. There's a long list of allowable projects homeowners can finance through the program, but they include solar panels, electric car charging stations, drip irrigation systems, home insulation projects, fans, new doors and windows, skylights and heating and air conditioning.
DeVries came up with the idea while working as an aide to Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates in 2008. He said he told Bates he had a crazy idea for making green energy more affordable. Bates backed him all the way.
With DeVries' idea, Berkeley started a small program with 13 homes and got projects financed with the idea of taking the program statewide. But then the mortgage crisis hit and federal and state regulators put it on hold because they were wary of approving any kind of new home financing schemes, DeVries said.
Since then, DeVries continued working on it, convincing 17 counties in California to join the program and working with state and federal regulators to make it happen. Some other counties were already doing similar programs, he said.

August 6, 2014 Salem fountain project hits more snags New subcontractor chosen to do etching on concrete blocks
By Neil H. Dempsey Staff Writer The Salem News Wed Aug 06, 2014, 04:30 AM EDT
SALEM The effort to renovate the downtown fountain featured in Nathaniel Hawthornes short story A Rill From The Town Pump is turning into something of a tale itself.
We have had a few unexpected issues, said Lynn Duncan, director of the citys planning department. Its been a complicated project.
Work on the Town Pump Fountain was supposed to be done by July 4. But as anybody who has seen the fenced-off site at Essex and Washington streets lately can attest, that didnt happen. Now it looks like it will be completed in mid- to late August, Duncan said.
The $250,000 project was designed to significantly reduce the footprint of the fountains basin it was often targeted by pranksters who dump soap in to make bubbles and replace its steps with concrete blocks inscribed with text from Hawthornes short story.
Workers will also put in a new filtration system, clean up the bronze plaques and install underwater lights that will shine up through the falling water at night.
There have been problems nearly from the get-go. The first cropped up when the contractor, R. Bates and Sons, discovered that dismantling the concrete base would be more complicated than anticipated. The project was put on hold as the company worked with engineers to develop a plan to avoid disrupting sensitive electrical and plumbing infrastructure below ground.
The delay was unexpected, though not exactly a surprise; whether its a house or a fountain, Duncan said, contractors often dont know exactly what theyll find when rehabbing a site. Also, the contractor apparently was working without complete drawings of what lay beneath the fountain.
Workers also encountered problems with drainage and plumbing, Duncan said, but theyve since been resolved, and everybody involved is now focused on what appears to be the final issue: getting the concrete blocks correctly etched with text.

Raising Cane's By KEVIN PARKS Tuesday August 5, 2014 11:03 AM
Some Clintonville residents were raising hell last week as a North High Street lot was cleared for a Raising Cane's restaurant.
However, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency officials inspected the site, reviewed the situation and found the project in compliance with stormwater certification, according to a spokeswoman.
That will probably do little to soothe the anger of members of Friends of the Ravines and Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed regarding the removal of trees, many of them two and three feet in diameter, on part of the Bill Moose Ravine across from the Graceland Shopping Center.
"I have some disappointing and very frustrating news about Bill Moose Ravine in Clintonville," FLOW adopted-area coordinator Julie Smiley wrote in a July 27 email that went out to many residents. "Part of Bill Moose Ravine in Clintonville, at 5132 N. High St., was destroyed to make way for a Raising Cane's fast-food restaurant. FLOW learned about the situation from a community member just a few days ago, and by then it was too late to try to do anything to protect the ravine from being destroyed.
"I am not sure FLOW or the community could have done anything to protect the ravine, but we will never know. This is a significant loss of green space, wildlife habitation and stormwater protection for our community."
Contrary to reports circulating online, the Ohio EPA did not issue a notice of violation regarding the construction project, said Heather Lauer, public information officer for the agency.
"We received a number of calls about it," she added.
When an official visited the site late last week, nothing about the removal of trees triggered any kind of action on the part of the EPA.
"We don't have any authority involving trees not involving wetlands," Smiley said.
