Building department 'art wall' is visitor friendly

    - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

David Galassi, building official/director of Marion County building department, adds a few things to a shadow boy while putting the finishing touches on his "work of art" Monday morning.

When remodeling contractor Mike Pryor visited the Marion County Building Safety Department on Monday morning to get a permit for a window change-out job, he was met with a surprise.

Now that makes it feel like the building department, said Pryor, who operates American Remodel and Tile in Ocala, as he looked at the recently completed 30-foot long trade themed wall mural in the client waiting room.

A vintage Yankee mechanical hand drill, a stick ruler, several types of circular saw blades, an antique caulk line and a level thought to be about 100 years old are a few of the tools that are arranged in wood framing and shadow boxes in an artistic tribute to the building trades.

Most people dont want to be here, but getting a permit is a necessity and we try to make being here more pleasant. Were charged with making sure state building codes are followed to ensure life safety, said David Galassi, the department director and a building official.

Galassi, head of the department for two years, was a building contractor in Chicago for 25 years. He is experienced in Victorian renovation and has worked on a Frank Lloyd Wright home.

Several employees worked on the mural over the last two weekends in July as volunteers. The tools were donated by employees. The adjacent wall is done like a wall framing job, with a window and a site sign for a fictitious contractor showing what should be on a site sign, including the contractors number, Galassi said.

The waiting room also features a television tuned to the Home and Garden TV channel and a status board that displays appointments and other information.

David Doolittle with Sunshine Pools was at the department Monday, accompanied by his grandchildren Hailey Doolittle, 6, and Dylan Doolittle, 7.

As the youngsters looked at the mural, Doolittle said he has to pull permits in five surrounding counties in the course of his work.

Power Home Remodeling Group expansion into Detroit expected to create about 100 jobs

    - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DETROIT, MI Power Home Remodeling Group CEO Corey Schiller is making a bet on Detroit.

Schiller on Monday told the Philadelphia Inquirer the Chester, Penn.-based company opened a Detroit location because of its current economic situation.

"We want to be in Detroit specifically because its a tough situation," Schiller said. "That's what opportunities look like -- they're always a little messy when you first show up."

Schiller said he projects to create about 100 jobs within Powers first 12-18 months in Detroit. The Detroit location opened about three months ago.

"We hope to be a small part of the solution," he said. We welcome people with all professional backgrounds, and feel completely confident in candidates that come from the auto industry."

Schiller said the home remodeling industry is a growing market in areas like Detroit.

"The investment to make an energy efficient upgrade to a home is a sound financial decision that lowers monthly energy costs and appreciates the value of the home. That helps any homeowner affected by a difficult economy, he said. And, (Detroit) is among the most populated metropolitan areas in the country with an aging housing stock, a robust pool of job-seekers and weather conditions that warrant our products. Sounds like a win to me."

Plumber pleads guilty to home invasion & weapons charge

    - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man who wreaked havoc on two households two years ago this month now heads to prison. Joshua Jermaine Plumber pleaded guilty to two charges rather than stand trial. There were about ten charges against him but he pleaded guilty tohome invasion and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; The charges stem from an attack on his former girlfriend in the presence of her two small children.

"He arrived shortly before the police did. He actually did fire several shots in the neighborhood and there were several witnesses who heard those gunshots. He kicked in the door to her apartment, charged in and found her hiding in a closet with her two young children. And he used the handgun that he had to beat her with it. She calls it being pistol whipped and she did suffer very serious injuries as a result of the beating she took," said prosecutor Tara Hawkins.

Other charges stemmed from Plumber's allegedly running from police and hiding out at a second house nearby.

"He ended up having about a four and a half hour standoff with law enforcement officers, Lake Charles Police Department," said Plumber.

Most of those charges have now been dismissed. Still, Hawkins says avoiding the ordeal of a trial is easier on the victim and witnesses.

"This was a relationship gone bad.The battered victim sometimes hesitates on coming forward, they have feelings of guilt or just concerns about coming forward and testifying against a former love interest," said Hawkins.

Judge Mike Canaday sentenced Plumber to twenty years in prison. Hawkins says such cases often escalates to severe injury or death. She encourages victims to report domestic violence.

"I do believe the offices is very concerned about the escalation in violence. So, we are certainly focused on pursuing those charges even with a victim makes it difficult for us to do so," said Hawkins.

Plumber has spent two years in jail so he's likely eligible for parole in about fifteen years.

Plumber is 27 years old so he'll likely be around 42 when he gets out of prison.

Drought-tolerant yards can be free with rebate

    - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LOS ANGELES (KABC) --

"That's the main thing that people probably don't believe. It did not cost me anything," said Cordero.

Because California is in the midst of a water crisis, local water agencies are offering homeowners rebates up to $3 a square foot for removing water guzzling turf and replacing it with plants and mulch that use much less of our precious resource.

A new company called Turf Terminators will take those rebates in exchange for a new drought-tolerant yard.

"We've done a lot of planning. We've streamlined our operations, and we've actually come to a point where we can offer these services for a cost that is lower than the value of the rebates that we get. Therefore, we don't have to charge the end user and the customer any money," said Andrew Farrell with Turf Terminators.

After an initial consultation with the homeowner to choose plants and a variety of mulch, Turf Terminators will file for the rebate and handle the rest of the labor.

Another great feature of this type of landscaping is all of the irrigation is underground. With traditional sprinklers, there's a lot of evaporation in hot and windy conditions, which costs you money.

"A study of the city of Santa Monica and Santa Monica colleges says that for a 2,000-square-foot yard that's green and lush and has proper upkeep, switching that with drought-tolerant landscape...can save up to $2,200 in a given year," said Farrell.

However, if your yard is just dirt and weeds and not green-growing grass, you're probably not eligible for the rebate.

For now, Turf Terminators is only working with Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers. But it plans to expand all over Southern California.
