Denison City Council awards contract for Paw Paw Wastewater Plant office addition

    - August 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Facilities at Denisons Paw Paw Wastewater Treatment Plant will soon be getting an upgrade after the City Council voted Monday to award a construction contract for a new office and laboratory at the site.

From its creation in the late 1950s until the early 1990s, the facility was served only by a single, 200-square-foot office building. Over the years, a single-wide trailer home and two portable buildings have been added to the site and act as the current offices and other facilities for plant staff.

We are getting something much longer lasting and getting (staff) all in the same building, Public Works Director David Howerton said.

The new facility will be a pre-engineered, 2,016-square-foot metal building with room for operations, offices, and a laboratory, said Howerton. The facility will feature a masonry wainscot on the exterior, which Howerton said he expects will ensure that the facility will remain usable for at least 50 years.

We have to give employees the opportunity for proper office space, City Manager Robert Hanna said.

Moore Contracting of Pottsboro submitted the lowest, and winning, bid for the project, totalling $133,603 for the construction and other work on the new facility. This is below the $150,000 that was budgeted for the project, said Mayor Jared Johnson.

The project will be financed through water and sewer utility funds available in this years budget. The project comes after $6 million in updates and upgrades to the plant in 2013. This includes remodelling of the facilitys aeration building and new equipment throughout the plant. Howerton said that new blowers at the plant are expected to save the city $200,000 annually.

I feel this is a very prudent investment, said Howerton.

The two portable buildings are still functional and will be re-purposed by the city, said Howerton. One will remain at the site for additional storage, restroom facilities, and other uses, said Howerton. The trailer is expected to be retired from use.

It has seen its best day a long time ago, said Howerton.

This Week in Lima City Council

    - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lima City Council will hold its first regular meeting of August Monday night with a full agenda facing the legislative body.

Council will be asked to accept a Safe Neighborhood Anti-Heroin Grant from the Attorney Generals Office. The grant will reimburse the Police Department for two patrol officers salaries, for two years.

Council will receive a communication from Ohio State University in Columbus about capital projects the University wants to do at it's Lima Regional Campus. The plan is to resurface roads and parking lots, do HVAC repairs and replacements, and upgrade campus security. This will cost nearly $1.7 million.

Council will vote on a number of ordinances related to the new Stadium Park planned for property located next to the newly named Spartan Stadium. Council will have to amend a number of ordinances since they all refer to 'Lima Stadium', which no longer exists. The ordinances will accept donations of property, finalize property deals and okay the use of state capital improvement money to build the park.

And finally, council will enter into a nearly $900,000 contract with Bluffton Paving to complete various paving projects in the city.

The meeting begins at 7 Monday night in Council Chambers at the Lima Municipal Center.

Scot Young Research Stresses the Consequences Associated With Wet Floors in the Workplace

    - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

St. Joseph, Missouri (PRWEB) August 04, 2014

Scot Young Research (SYR) has announced the release of a new white paper highlighting the dangers of wet floors in the workplace. On an annual basis, about 95 million workdays are lost due to falls, and the statistics for workplace falls are rising. A slippery or unclean floor can be one of the biggest hazards for accidents in the workplace.

Falls in the workplace cause physical and emotional pain for the victims and financial burdens for the business where the person works. SYR asserts that those statistics can be lowered if employers have better safety procedures, better cleaning equipment and better cleaning training for their employees.

About nine out of every 10 falls happen when a person steps onto a wet surface. The Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) said the causes of a majority of slips and falls range from walkways that are contaminated, oily or wet; loose rugs or mats on the floor; spills of various materials that cause one to slip or fall; employees who are not wearing the right type of shoes/boots; weather and poorly trained employees.

These falls in the workplace cause sprains, broken bones, head injuries, and sometimes even death. For some individuals it means weeks of physical rehabilitation. For most individuals it means some lost time at work.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the workers compensation costs related to falls hits $70 billion on an annual basis. Insurance companies pass their costs on to the workforce and employers. The average fall where injury occurs is followed by eight days of not working, which is two days longer than injuries due to other causes. Thirty percent of falls that happen on a flat surface result in 21 days of workdays lost.

According to Liberty Mutual, between 1998 and 2005, falls in the workplace rose by 25.6 percent. During that same timeframe, injuries from other work-related accidents had dropped. It seems obvious to the cleaning industry that companies across the U.S. need to make it a priority to enact better cleaning procedures and upgrade to better cleaning products that help ensure safety.

With solutions like the Dry Mop and the Multi-Purpose Tool, SYR is working to improve the ways companies keep their floors clean, while also significantly reducing the number of insurance claims made due to slips and falls. For more information, download this white paper today.

About SYR: Scot Young Research is focused on innovation, safety and quality, and proves it with the tools it has created. SYR promises quality, efficiency, cost savings and results. When organizations take on SYR cleaning solutions, they see a reduction in slips and falls related to cleanups. These organizations also see a reduction in insurance costs related to slip and fall claims. SYR products are currently in use at fast food giants McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys and more. The SYR lines of products are a premium source for setting a new standard in health, hygiene and safety.

25 Ways to Add Curb Appeal to the Home During National Curb Appeal Month

    - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Maumee, Ohio (PRWEB) August 04, 2014

During National Curb Appeal Month, the experts at Fypon remind homeowners that the importance of curb appeal can never be underrated when you own a home. Whether its pride of ownership, fitting in with the neighborhood (or standing out!), the exterior of your home reflects your personality and can create positive impressions. And, if youre selling your house, the importance of curb appeal jumps ten-fold as you try to position your home for an instant connection with potential buyers.

There are dozens of easy ways to upgrade different exterior aspects of your home. Many of these enhancements can be achieved with Fypon synthetic products. Lightweight yet durable, these low-maintenance pieces resist insect infestations, rot, decay and moisture. Try any of the following fast and easy installations to transform the look of your home:

1.Trim out exterior windows. Use crossheads for over a window and top with a solid, decorative or recessed panel keystone accent piece. On the sides and below the window, use moulding pieces with plinth blocks in the corners to eliminate miter cuts.

2.Make your entryway more welcoming with an elegant door surround. Start with fluted pilasters on either side of the door and then top the door with a decorative pediment --- try a rams head, sunburst, acorn or peaked cap style.

3.Accent a bay window by adding window panels below the opening.

4.Add classic crown or fascia dentil moulding beneath gutters and eaves to heighten the appearance of your home.

5.Replace a rotting wooden porch system with a new structural balustrade system which includes porch posts, top and bottom rails, balusters and all the other pieces essential to create a great, weather-resistant porch.

6.Interlock and install pieces of PVC Beaded Board on the ceiling of a porch or sunroom and then use the same low-maintenance materials for a wainscot treatment on the walls.

7.If you have a ceiling fan on a front porch, add a two-piece ceiling medallion around the fan's base to add style to your entire porch.

Harrodsburg Road developers try to preserve massive bur oak, which may be 500 years old

    - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This large bur oak is being protected by developers as they are building new houses and apartments near Harrodsburg Road and Military Pike. The tree is thought to be more than 300 years old. HERALD-LEADER|BuyPhoto

A towering bur oak, more than 300 years old, is dominating the eastern skyline just off Harrodsburg Road at Military Pike in Lexington, now that crews have removed undergrowth that hid much of it.

"I gasped the first time I saw it after the brush was cleared off," said tree physiologist Tom Kimmerer, who wrote a protection plan for the tree. "It's absolutely stunning, way taller than anything else around here."

Kimmerer added that he thinks the bur oak could be almost 500 years old, not the 300-odd years often estimated.

The venerable tree has been at the center of preservation disputes several times over the past several years.

The most recent one was last year, when some Lexington residents tried to block a Ball Homes plan for apartments and single-family homes off Harrodsburg Road because they feared the old tree would suffer. Ball Homes insisted that it would make sure the tree was protected, and the Urban County Council ultimately approved its development plan.

Now, the company is getting started on development. It also is moving ahead with plans to protect the tree, which Kimmerer was commissioned to develop.

Kimmerer said the first steps included having Big Beaver Tree Co. remove the brush and vines that had grown up around the foot of the tree. Some old, dead branches also were removed from the bur oak itself, he said.

"The tree now has been fenced off very carefully, and no construction equipment will be allowed inside the fence," Kimmerer said last week. "Ball Homes is being careful to make sure all the contractors know they may not violate the fence."

The next step will be a thick layer of paper, covered by mulch, to kill and keep down weeds in a three-quarter-acre area around the trunk of the huge tree.

Kim Jong Un Gives Field Guidance to Chollima Tile Factory

    - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pyongyang, August 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, gave field guidance to the Chollima Tile Factory.

He looked round the mosaics depicting smiling President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il newly erected in the compound of the factory and the monument to the field guidance given by them and he expressed satisfaction over the successful erection of the mosaics.

He went round the newly-built room dedicated to the history of the factory.

He told the officials to make a new history of the factory by keeping production going at a high rate, adding that he gave an instruction to the KPA to operate the factory to which Kim Jong Il attached great importance.

Stressing the need to make the heroic working spirit displayed in the post-war period of great Chollima upsurge run high at this factory in order to supply in good time the building materials needed by great socialist construction sites, he proposed naming the factory located in Kangson, hometown of Chollima, Chollima Tile Factory.

Going round various places including adhesives and tile production shops, digital natural color spray printing room and tile exhibition, he learned in detail about the production and new products development.

He highly praised the officials and employees of the factory for displaying patriotic devotion to overfulfill this year's tile production plan set higher than any other years.

He expressed great satisfaction, noting that the factory is the one strictly based on Juche and a patriotic one as it is capable of keeping its production on a normal footing, unaffected by any worldwide economic upheaval and the longer one watches the factory, the more attractive and useful it looks.

He set forth tasks to be fulfilled by the factory.

He instructed the factory not only to satisfactorily meet the domestic demands for tiles but further boost their production and improve their quality so that they might be exported to other countries.
