WOODSTOCK Specks of mud flew Sunday as a dented car in reverse plowed into another vehicle, prompting a raucous cheer from a large crowd of McHenry County Fair-goers.
One onlooker in particular, Barb Brooks of Palatine, said the demolition derby was one of the many events she never missed when coming to the fair with Woodstock-based family members.
Its just something you cant see anywhere else, Brooks said, talking loudly over the revving of engines and smashing of metal.
The last day of the five-day fair featured two demolition derby events, as well as events such as a lawn tractor pull, an open horse show, a wood carving auction, among others.

Jason Szatkowski of Woodstock came for the demolition derby. A driver in the first round, or first heat, Szatkowski said hes been driving in derbies for 15 years total, but Sunday was the first time in six years.
While he wasnt driving one of the last three out of five cars standing, he said it was still a good time, just like it was when he first started at 15 years old.
Its such an adrenaline rush, Szatkowski said, watching as a team worked to make his car drivable for the consolation round later that evening.
The Grandstands bleachers were just about full throughout the first round of demolition, as Ken Bauman, president of the McHenry County Fair Association, said they were for many of events throughout the fair.
I think its been great, Bauman said of the fair overall. I mean our livestock numbers have been up, our Grandstands events have all been really good.

Ecstatic: The Diamonds collapse in a heap in their post-game celebrations. Photo: Getty Images
Australias demolition of New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games gold medal match was nothing short of spectacular. History was made when the Diamonds closed out the Silver Ferns by 18 goals, the biggest-ever margin between the two countries in the final of a major event.
It was a stunning turnaround from the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, when a heartbreaking double overtime loss to the Silver Ferns relegated Australia to the silver medal for the second games in a row.
This one was personal. Several players rebuilt their games and rebooted their lives to achieve a different outcome four years later. While the Diamonds played the gold medal match seemingly with ice in their veins, their reactions at the final whistle revealed what the win meant to them as individuals and as a team.

The heartbreak and agony of Delhi four years ago was erased for the players on court following an impressive full-court performance of shut-down defence and precision attack.

In hindsight it seems obvious that this Diamonds team was building towards something special. The key word that we kept hearing out of the camp in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated events of the games program was relentless.
It was an interesting and revealing choice of slogan. From the start of their preparation for this event in December last year, to their exquisite execution of a flawless final match, the relentless pursuit of perfection has been a trademark of this team.

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The longawaited demolition of the Salter Building and the Wells Fargo parking ramp, in downtown Duluth, will begin Monday morning.
The demolition is part of the Duluth transit Authority and the city's efforts to build a multimillion dollar multimodal transportation center.
Crews say access to the skywalk around the site will be restricted in the meantime.
The section that leads from the Northwest Passage over to Wells Fargo will be closed during the demolition phase for safety. Signs should guide pedestrians to other routes.
During demolition of the parking ramp walls next to the Northwest Passage, that entire section from the DECC will be closed from 7 A.M. to 5:30 in the evening for a threeday period.
"The DTA will be providing a shuttle service during the time that the skywalk is actually under construction," said DTA General Manager Dennis Jensen in September.
Demolition is expected to last three to four weeks.

BY TYREL LINKHORN BLADE BUSINESS WRITER
Rick Macek of Macek Custom Builders has spent the last few years focusing on renovation jobs, but hes recently started taking calls from people who are testing the waters of building a brand new home.
Until I get them signed on the dotted line you can never say, but Ive given three quotes in the last month, where in the past that would be in a year, he said. Thats pretty good. Im encouraged by it.
Area home builders such as Mr. Macek say theyre busier now than they have been in years, but the market for new construction in the Toledo area remains far below what it was before the Great Recession struck.
In 2004, nearly 1,600 new single-family homes went up in Lucas and Wood counties. By 2009, that number had withered to 268. Many established home builders took up remodeling jobs to survive. Some relative newcomers were pushed out of business.
Toledos real estate market has hardly boomed since then, but it has rebounded. During the last four years, existing homes in Lucas and upper Wood counties are selling for more money and are selling faster. According to the Toledo Board of Realtors, the average selling price through June was $116,513, up 17 percent from the same period in 2011. Meanwhile, the average home is on the market 114 days this year, down from 129 days in 2011.
Those modest market improvements are extending to new construction.
At a recent board meeting for the Home Builders Association of Greater Toledo, board president Chuck Barchick was apologetic. It was a few minutes after 3 p.m., and he was the only one there. However, he was willing to forgive the tardiness. The other members, he said, were out on job sites.
About four years ago you could have come in here, and wed have all been sitting here, he joked, gesturing to the empty chairs.

The structural work on the metro rail station at the Chennai airport, the second in the country after New Delhi to have such connectivity, has been completed, and now the interior work is on, according to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
We are now focussing on the installation of false ceiling and plastering, electrical and plumbing work. The sheeting work for the roof is in progress. The installation of lifts and escalators will begin soon, said an official of the CMRL.
In the Chennai Metro Rail, built at a cost of Rs. 14,600 crore, the airport is the last station of corridor-II, which links the 23-km stretch from Washermanpet to the airport. Corridor-I is a 22-km stretch between the Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount.
The station at the airport comprises a five-level terminal sprawling over 17,300 sq. m, and is built in such a way that it provides a link for commuters to new terminals of the airport. Similar to the one in New Delhi, there will be a check-in facility at the Chennai Central metro rail station for passengers to complete the procedures and board a train to the airport.
