Crews Extinguish Oakland Fire Sparked By Construction Mishap

OAKLAND (CBS SF) A construction mishap appears to have caused a one-alarm fire that damaged a North Oakland apartment and displaced at least one resident Saturday morning, a fire captain said.

The blaze was reported at 10:45 a.m. at a home in the 600 block of 55th Street, according to Oakland fire Capt. Dino Torres.

Crews arriving on the scene found fire coming from the roof of a rear apartment in the three-unit residential building.

No residents were inside the apartment at the time but contractors working on the homes roof were on scene, Torres said.

Firefighters got the blaze under control in about 20 minutes and kept it from spreading to neighboring apartments within the same building, he said.

    No injuries were reported.

Torres said contractors working on the buildings roof appear to have accidentally started the fire.

The fire captain said damage from the blaze is estimated at about $40,000.

Local Pest Control Company Warns Against Increase in Termite Swarms

    - August 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) August 03, 2014

JS Pest Control, a leading provider of pest control services for Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin and Boulder City, warned today that recent wet weather may encourage termite swarming in coming weeks.

With more rain in the forecast, residents should be particularly cautious about termite infestations, according to the company, which has been protecting Las Vegas homes and businesses since 1999. Our areas typically dry climate is good for preventing termite infestations, said Jimmy Stephenson, owner of JS Pest Control. But when we get rainy, wet weather, it really encourages swarming, and termites multiply quickly. The best bet is to get the termites exterminated quickly, before they multiply and you have extensive and expensive damage on your hands.

Rainy weather attracts termites because the insects prefer wet wood to dry wood. When rain soaks into structures and humidity keeps the moisture in, termites will soon begin to swarm.

Our customers sometimes try to treat the problem themselves, but end up paying more in repairs in the long run because the problem continues to multiply. The best bet is to get professional help as soon as possible, said Stephenson.

That help is easy to find, according to JS Pest Control. The company provides a complete suite of termite control treatments, including services for single-family dwellings or full subdivisions and commercial structures. The skilled technicians at JS Pest Control can also provide a thorough, honest inspection of your home to determine what type of treatment is needed.

    ABOUT JS PEST CONTROL

Known in and around town as the best Las Vegas pest control company in the industry, JS Pest Control combines exceptional service with a superior level of expertise. Adding color to a homes exterior

    - August 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Q. We have ordered a new garage door that comes primed but not painted. Our 40-year-old house has natural cedar siding and some brown trim, somewhat Arts and Crafts style. The garage takes up approximately 50 percent of the front facade. Do you have any color suggestions? Think fun. We are in our 70s, and want fun/tasteful/ pretty. Many thanks. Sue

    A. Color is an individual choice, but it also needs to work with the color of your homes exterior cladding. What could look fabulous on your garage door is a smoky gray/green-blue color. Think turquoise that is softened with gray. Any shade of blue goes well with wood shades, and this choice has lots of life to it. Although front doors and trim look good in a high-gloss finish, because the garage door is so large, use a satin finish.

There are other additions to your exterior that will build on the style and appeal of the facade. Fypon manufactures thousands of decorative millwork elements in a variety of architectural styles.

Each piece is crafted from tough, weather-resistant, high-performance materials that are resistant to decay, insect infestation and water damage. For Arts and Crafts homes, Fypon recommends woodgrain/timber products such as lightweight beams under a porch ceiling, brackets, corbels and two- and three-plank panel shutters.

Shown here over a double garage in a row of townhouses is a trellis system kit in woodgrain. It also comes in smooth style. Also shown is a cheerful window flanked by three-panel shutters with a beam window sill. The violet stain is a vibrant color that would also suit your home. Planters and gardens add color and joy to the front of your home as well.

When you are not sure of a color selection, experiment with different shades on a large piece of Bristol board, tape up the new color against the existing exterior color, stand back and see how it makes you feel.

Fypon has declared August National Curb Appeal Month. We all benefit from the care our neighbors take in their home and surrounding property. Enjoy your new venture, and never lose your wonderful spirit.

    Q. I have a wooden angel that I painted white and want to apply highlights to in a shade of brown. Ive seen you do this on a white headboard. What is the mixture you applied? Thanks for all your great ideas. Macelinda

    A. There are many recipes for creating the aged or antique look that you are looking for. I generally use one part latex paint mixed with three parts glazing liquid. The color comes from the paint; choose a burnt umber or medium-brown shade. Apply a thin coat of the colored glaze over the dry white painted surface. Let dry. Apply more coats until you have the color that you want. The glaze makes the mixture translucent so that you will see the white shining through. The more glaze in the mixture, the more translucent it will be and the longer it will take to dry. More paint in the mixture will make it more opaque. Experiment on a spare piece of painted wood until you have the shading that suits.

Niagara County considers new public works facility again

    - August 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LOCKPORT Niagara County leaders are again considering a new Public Works Department facility, but this time it could be significantly scaled back from the failed plan of six years ago.

It would still be built on Junction Road in Cambria, where the county bought 60 acres of land for the project for $180,000 in 2008.

However, the County Legislature called a halt to planning when it received a $42 million cost estimate for the new complex, which was to include the Public Works offices, a highway equipment garage and extras such as space to store the countys voting machines.

This time, the project may include only a highway garage to replace the aging building on South Niagara Street in Lockport, according to Richard W. Eakin, deputy public works commissioner for buildings and grounds.

The Legislature is to vote Tuesday on paying the Wendel engineering firm of Amherst $18,500 to come up with a floor plan and exterior renderings of the building.

Its my understanding were going to be supplied with more alternatives than we were before, said Majority Leader Richard E. Updegrove, R-Lockport.

He suggested a possible hybrid facility to store the countys trucks with the possibility of future additions.

The resolution on Tuesdays agenda speaks of determining what departments should be identified to be included in a Phase I construction.

No cost estimate for the eventual construction has been determined, Eakin said.

Referring to the 2008 stop order, Updegrove said. A lot of things have changed since then, but the deterioration of the building Public Works is housed in has not changed.
