McCarthys Roofing Ltd., a supervisor and two workers have been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Service NL announced today.
Justice
The charges resulted from an investigation related to inspections that occurred in Corner Brook on May 16. The charges were laid on June 24.
Two inspections took place at the Corner Brook Canadian Tire store located in Murphy Square in Corner Brook.
An Occupational Health and Safety officer observed workers on the roof who were using fall protection equipment incorrectly. On the first inspection, harnesses were being worn but they were not attached to the existing anchorages.
On the second inspection that day, one worker was not connected to an anchorage and the second worker was connected incorrectly to the equipment. The supervisor was not present on either occasion.
Neither of these inspections were the result of incidents or incidents involving injuries.
The company was charged with failure to provide the necessary supervision to ensure the safety of workers and with failure to ensure that workers were provided with a suitable fall protection system.
The supervisor was charged with failure to ensure that workers under his supervision used equipment that is required under regulation.

Roofing companies have flocked to the area after Alice was hit with heavy storms and hail on May 27, but Jesse's Roofing has one system that is going extinct.
One thing we specialize in is a trade my dad left me hot tar system, said Jesse Barrientes, owner of Jesse's Roofing. Not a lot of companies can do it. It's a system I learned from an early age.
That's because Jesse grew up in the roofing industry with his father, Jesse Barrientes Sr.
Even with new technology, Barrientes said tar is one of the best material to use on flat roofs.
Because of the elements and the hot sun, there's nothing that beats this system, he said.

PATTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Check the ditch. That is what some Centre County residents said they need to do every time it rains in their neighborhood, and they say they're sick of doing that and want a retaining wall to help keep water out of their property.
Carolynn Stoicheff has lived on Douglas Drive in the Park Forest area of Patton Township for years. She said her home has been flooded three times and her yard is routinely flooded by heavy rains because of an overflowing drainage ditch in her backyard.
Several years ago, Patton Township officials started construction on a retaining wall for the "Douglas Ditch," as residents call it, to keep the water off of properties. Stoicheff said the wall stops at her property, and wants the wall to be continued.
"Because where the retaining wall ends, it's almost like it pushes [the water] through the yard," Stoicheff said. "We've ripped carpet out, replaced carpet. We've sucked water out of our house."
Stoicheff said if the retaining wall is continued past their properties and down to others from hers, the flooding would all but stop.
The ditch is about four feet deep and is a drainage way for the neighborhood, starting from Park Forest Middle School to the other side of Atherton Street.
Patton Township Manager Doug Erickson said the ditch is the primary area for water to flow.
"It drains several hundred acres upstream of there," Erickson said. "On big storms we can get some flooding."

Construction on a new 24-hour restaurant has been halted until a decision is made on how wide the sidewalk around the business will be to meet MDHA requirements.
The Diner would be a four- level restaurant serving food 24-hours a day at the corner of Demonbreun and Third Avenue South.
The restaurant is being opened by the owners of Tootsies Orchid Lounge, Rippys Bar and Grill and Honky Tonk Central on Broadway.
However, The Diner will not be a honky tonk, nor will it feature live music, according to General Manager Jonathon Scott who is helping with the design and layout of the restaurant.
I was super excited. It was right in my wheel house, he said. I am a food guy. I worked at The Palm and Steakhouse for the majority of my career, so I was excited to have the chance to be a part of the 24-hour diner.
Owners of The Diner told News 2 during construction, NES required the builders to construct an underground vault to house transformers.
During construction of the vault, the walls of the building became unstable and the crew demolished them. That meant the majority of the building was demolished and changed how Metro classified the construction project.
Initially, the owners planned to keep more than 50% of the existing structure, so the city classified the project as a remodel.
Once the majority of the building was gone, the city then classified the building project as new construction. That then gave MDHA jurisdiction over the project because MDHA oversees the Rutledge Hill Redevelopment District where The Diner would be located.
