Country Maid Gains Production Intelligence to Meet Growing Demand for Hand-Braided Pastries

    - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Just as they have been for the past two decades, workers at Country Maid still braid their distinctive pastries by hand for fundraising groups across America. But thats the only part of the process that remains manual.

Ken and Marlene Banwart, the couple who founded Country Maid in 1991, began making pastries in their basement for the local farmers market. The baked goods quickly became a local hit. Thats when the Banwarts realized their pastries could have wider appeal. They began freezing the raw pastries and creating new varieties, ranging from tart apple to cream cheese fillings, to be sold to nonprofits and school groups for fundraising activities.

The pastries are popular because they have a homemade taste and warmth. People let the frozen dough rise over night, put it into the oven to bake, and then enjoy it. Not surprisingly, the process for turning the ingredients into these tasty pastries is far more complicated.

In 2012, Country Maid decided to invest in an automated facility to respond to consumer demand for the Butter Braid pastries.

Inside the Iowa facility of the now 100 percent employee-owned company, ingredients like dry milk, flour and sugar are stored in multiple holding bins and are transferred into an industrial mixer where theyre combined with water. The mixture then goes into a rotary dough feeder that transfers it down a conveying line. Much like a rolling pin, a machine then spreads and layers the dough, which is then topped with butter and filling. Just before it is moved to the freezer, a worker puts the final touch on the 12-layered pastry, intertwining the top layers to create the signature look of the Butter Braid pastries.

    Challenges

Prior to their upgrade, workers were far more involved in the production process from hand batching and scaling every pastry to cutting open each bag of flour to pour into the mixer. Operators also collected and reported basic production data manually, leaving room for human error and inconsistency. This fully manual process was also time and labor intensive.

By adding automation to this process, Country Maid wanted to gain advanced data-collection capabilities to ensure each batch would retain the same high-level quality as the last. They also wanted to improve overall operational efficiencies throughout the facility.

Country Maid had to add an additional line to help meet demand. They had two options when it came to designing the mix room. They could either replace their mixer with a larger one, which would require expanding their facility to accommodate its size, or they could install a smaller new mixer with the new additional automated line.

We found that if we automated a new larger mixer, we could reduce the size of the mixer and avoid having to expand the facility. This option was less expensive and would achieve the same goal, said Marc Banwart, systems integration specialist, Country Maid. We knew the change would help us meet growing production requirements and give us access to data that would allow us to make better operating decisions.

Bomber to visit Boundary Bay Airport

    - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A piece of Second World War history will pay a visit to Boundary Bay Airport next week.

The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona is flying its B-25J bomber Maid in the Shade to the East Ladner airport as part of a summer tour. It will be on display to the public from Monday to Thursday.

Visitors will be able to tour the aircraft, "breathe in the history" and talk with volunteers from the nonprofit organization about the plane.

    Flights are also being offered.

"Ride of a life time, views are great, no matter where you sit," says Russ Gilmore, one of CAF Airbase Arizona's B-25 pilots.

"You can feel all those 1700hp kick in on take off, you will get a taste of what our veterans did flying aircraft like our B-25 in combat and the sacrifices they made for the freedom we enjoy today. All gave some and some gave all," he says in an email to the Optimist.

Flight prices are $395 US (waist gunner) and $650 US (flight deck).

Gilmore is a retired commercial airline pilot who volunteers with CAF Airbase Arizona and pilots both Maid in the Shade along with the group's B-17G Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey.

He says frequently asked questions by visitors include where are the repaired bullet holes and was this the type of aircraft used on Doolittle's Tokyo Raid.

The B-25 Mitchell was made famous by the Doolittle Raiders on April 18, 1942, states a press release from CAF Airbase

Colleyville West Nile Woes Continue Despite Aggressive Treatment

COLLEYVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) City workers in Colleyville have been engaged in what, so far, seems like a futile fight. Despite aggressive treatment, the West Nile Virus keeps popping up in one area over and over.

CBS 11 News set out to find out why the virus is proving so tough to get rid of.

For the last month Randy Bright has been on the hunt. The Colleyville code enforcement officer walks through one neighborhoods alleys and creek beds, finds mosquitos, and kills them.

Its whenever I cant find em is when its a problem, he said.

The problem is constant. Despite Brights best efforts, and reports that there are two-thirds fewer mosquitos overall in the area, West Nile keeps showing up.

Bright said, Youre thinking no matter what I do they continue to breed, so youre trying to find out where theyre breeding.

In an area full of children, resident Justin Cleveland said people are starting to ask if the city needs to spray. You gotta let the city do what theyre going to do, he said. It doesnt look good for them to get more and more reports, so theyre going to do the best they can to take care for the problem. I think.

Palo Alto: Pool of council candidates swells to 12

    - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Yet another person has pulled nomination papers to run for Palo Alto City Council, bringing the total to 12 since mid-July.

Wayne Douglass obtained the forms from City Clerk Donna Grider on Tuesday. He endorsed last year's Measure D, which sought public approval for a 60-unit apartment complex for low-income seniors and 12 single-family homes at Maybell and Clemo avenues. It was ultimately defeated by grassroots citizens group that said the project was too dense.

Five of the nine council seats are up for grabs Nov. 4. Incumbents Karen Holman, Greg Scharff and Nancy Shepherd have all pulled papers, but Gail Price has said she is not interested in running again. Larry Klein, meanwhile, is leaving office after serving the maximum number of terms.

Others who have obtained the forms include former Gunn High School teacher John Karl Fredrich, retired Boeing engineer Seelam Reddy, downtown resident Richard Wendorf and panhandler Victor Frost.

Eric Filseth and Tom DuBois, who have aligned themselves with the residentialist movement that seeks to put the brakes on development, have also pulled papers. They are running as a slate with Holman.

Rounding out the group of would-be council members are real estate agent Lydia Kou and concert promoter Mark Weiss. Kou has ties to Palo Altans for Sensible Zoning, which opposed Measure D, and Weiss has been critical of planned community zoning, which allows developers to build bigger projects as long as they provide certain public benefits.

Meanwhile, a potential 13th candidate, Claude Ezran, announced this week that he will not seek office.

"A simple analysis of the new competitive landscape shows that running against three incumbents, with the abundance of campaign volunteers, funding, endorsements and support that incumbency usually provides, and also three candidates, who are running together as a team and have behind them, even before the start of the race, the formidable campaign organization that, against most odds, defeated Measure D, would have been a close to impossible task for an independent candidate like myself," Ezran, the founder of World Music Day, said in an email.

The period to pull papers opened on July 14 and will close on Aug. 8 if all eligible incumbents opt to run again. Otherwise, the deadline to turn in the forms will be extended to Aug. 13 for non-incumbents.

Nomination papers must be signed by 25 registered voters, according to the city's election guide. The cost to file is $25 but the fee is waived if a person collects 100 valid signatures.

Comment on Colorados First Summer Tubing Hill Opens at Snow Mountain Ranch by Amber

    - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch launches (literally!) an impressive new outside feature, and its already drawing the generations.

On Monday, July 27, 2014, The YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch, in Granby, was host to quite a new celebrity in the outdoor family mecca of the United StatesColorados first summer tubing hill. Its almost alarming that we didnt have one of these before, as we are toted as the extreme, family fun headquarters in America. This has to be one of the most accessible, non-queasy, pure 20-second joys for children ages 2 100. Thats what makes this summer tubing hill so brilliantnot only is it bright white against the lush green backdropits the most fun risk I know moms, little children and even my own mother would take, I assume. My mother will be testing this out this fall! This was one of best adventures my children and I have had in some time. And, you know we are a well-traveled crew.

The official ribbon cutting was a one-two punch. We got Colorados newest thrill ride AND snapshots of the extraordinarily large scissors that were originally designed for the other side of Rocky Mountain National Park. These were the very same scissors that reopened Highway 36 after the historical floods in fall of 2013. This was heartwarming; the scissors might be a good luck charm with ushering in healthy, happy and safe Colorado journeys. I had to have a cut myself. After presentations from Kent Meyer, President/CEO of YMCA of the Rockies, Robyn Bartling, Landscape Architect with Design Concepts; Duane Sanderson, President, TDS Construction and Steve Goldmann, Chairman of the Board of Directors, YMCA of the Rockies.

It was time for the media and children to hit the slope. Never fearful was my 3-year-old, the youngest tuber of the day. I only wish I was as talented as the other mothers to capture her faces on video and instantaneously post. From sheer horror to overwhelming exuberance, we were up and down that tube hill 10 times in less than an hour! Hank the Tank, the more reserved of my children, was even more impressive. He had two YMCA staff members to accompany him and race down the hill over 15 times. He was the last one on the hill, Hank the Tank nearly missed lunch! But, not before we had some real tank women and men join us for the best surprise of the day. The Navy Seabees, as theyre called because of their initials CB for Construction Battalion, were working with the Department of Defenses Innovative Readiness Training on several projects at Snow Mountain Ranch and took a break as dirt devils swirled in their construction site a few hundreds yards away and hit the slope. Geared up, this was certainly a memorable moment not only for the core, but everyone present. Gosh, the YMCA really does make that magic of outdoor fun and multi-generational adventure affordable, accessible and most importantly, non-threatening. Whether you want to try it for the afternoon or book a longer stay at the YMCA of the Rockies, Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, this is to-do for every family. And, stay tuned, as this is only the first phase of the 22-acre site of the Family Adventure Park at the resort. There is drive-up access to the tubing hill with a new 13,000-square-foot plaza housing a concession and equipment stand, restrooms, look out points and lots of picnic seating. Capital improvements funds paid for the tubing hill and the remainder of the project will be dependent upon donations and operational funds. For schedules, prices and more visit, http://snowmountainranch.org/activities/summer-tubing-hill/. A special thanks to them for hosting!

Route 219 taking shape across Somerset County landscape

    - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JOHNSTOWN There is an 11-mile path, cut through the woods between Meyersdale and Somerset, that is starting to look like a road.

Straightaways and turns are clearly discernible. A few bridge columns are in place.

More than 4 million cubic yards of earth have been moved.

Almost a year ago, in late August 2013, the area was mostly a forest when dignitaries gathered for a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony to begin construction on the new stretch of U.S. Route 219.

The limited-access, four-lane highway is not scheduled to be completed until the autumn of 2017, but the transformation from wilderness to transportation route is obviously underway.

Its really nice, Thomas Helsel, project construction manager from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said. Its an encouragement I think to everybody.

I have people tell me when they drive through this area and they see the progress that has been made, theyre starting to see how the highways taking shape and how theyre going to be able to drive on this highway someday.

Somerset County Commissioner John Vatavuk echoed those sentiments.

Im pleased with the progress, Vatavuk said.

People are really starting to see the progress now.
