Looking to save some money on your fuel bills?
Westons social services department has partnered with Mr. Handyman of Upper Fairfield County to promote the free-of-charge Home Energy Solutions Income Eligible (HES-IE), a program sponsored by Energize Connecticut that can help.
As heating fuel and electricity become more expensive, the case for weatherizing homes becomes stronger, while the costs of inaction increasingly hurt families budgets, according to Charlene Chiang-Hillman, Westons director of social services.
Mr. Handyman has committed its community outreach staff to provide in-home assistance with the HES-IE application process and scheduling to Weston residents, according to a press release issued by Mr. Handyman.
We need to get the word out. Many Weston seniors and families qualify, but they dont take advantage of this free weatherization and energy efficiency program. Either they havent heard about it, or they dont believe its really free, Ms. Chiang-Hillman said.
Customers of Connecticut Light & Power, Yankee Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas whose combined household earnings are less than 60% of the state median income are eligible for free-of-charge HES-IE services.
Program qualification is expedited for households receiving energy assistance, supplemental nutrition assistance (SNAP), elderly living on Social Security, and families relying on disability or unemployment insurance.
We encourage residents to call Mr. Handymans outreach team if they are interested in this program. They may also call the Department of Social Services at 203-222-2663, Ms. Chiang-Hillman said.
Mr. Handyman will donate $25 to the Weston Warm-Up Fund for each HES-IE appointment that is completed by their company. We hope all eligible households will buy into this win-win campaign: homes become more comfortable and energy bills decrease, our audit and insulation crews have work, and the Warm-Up Fund receives much-needed cash, said Lorenzo Wyatt, co-owner of Mr. Handyman.

DIXON Businesses on Peoria Avenue between Second and Third Streets might want to brace for an uptick in business during the 12th week of the Dixon downtown streetscape project.
That block will be opened to local traffic from the south, restoring access for businesses and properties. Between Second and First streets on Peoria Avenue, work will continue on the Telegraph building vault and adjacent areas.
Much of the work done next week will be on First Street.
The sidewalk work between Hennepin and Galena avenues is slated to be completed. Plants will go into planters, and trees will go into grates. Also on the docket are installation of curbs and gutters, electrical work, and water main connections.
According to the engineering companies:
The intersection of First Street and Peoria Avenue will be closed for part of the week for water main connections. Southbound Peoria Avenue traffic will be detoured around the construction.Once that is completed, the water main work will continue west on First Street to Highland Avenue, resulting in closure of the westbound lane on the north side between Peoria and Highland avenues.
Pavement removal and water service installation will be finished on First Street from Galena to Ottawa avenues, and curb, gutter and sidewalk installation will begin. Curb placement will be staged in front of Fifth Third Bank to allow continual access to the drive-thru.
On First Street from Ottawa to Crawford avenues, pavement installation will continue, and brick pavers will be installed. On Ottawa Avenue from Second to First streets, modular block wall installation will resume.

The Georgia Bulldogs open preseason football camp later this afternoon, but they wont be able to practice on the grass fields right next to the football complex.
Poor growing conditions after a re-sod project earlier this summer left portions of the upper Bermuda grass fields unworthy of withstanding the wear-and-tear it will have to endure from the Bulldogs practices the next four months. So UGA is bringing in 18 truckloads of lay-and-play sod over the next two days. Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Georgia should be able to practice on the new grass by Monday.
We tested the root system and decided to just go ahead and do it now, McGarity said. The way this process works, theyll be able to practice on them next week, no problem.
In the meantime, the Bulldogs have two newly re-done field turf practice fields on the lower end of the Butts-Mehre football complex that they will utilize over the next three days.
The areas inside the hash marks on the three 70-yard natural grass fields was re-sodded after summer camps and are ready for practice. Georgia considered waiting until the off week after the season opener against Clemson but decided to go ahead and do it now. UGA says the lay-and-play system uses deep cuts of sod and is the same used for BCA National Championship Games and Super Bowls.

ColoVista Golf Course general manager Ryan Andrews drives a golf cart over his 18-hole course. While most would be distracted by the scenic layout and startling views of the Lost Pines, Andrews is pointing down toward the grass.
He is pointing toward the fairway, particularly the plush Bermuda grass that populates it. Over the past year since its opening, the restoration of the courses fairways has been a top priority. And after 12 months of patient and steady care, it is starting to pay some major dividends.
It has been a slow process, Andrews said. It would cost tens of millions of dollars to re-sod and entire golf course, so we had to be patient.
Rather than start over, the course managers nourished the existing Bermuda grass planted by the courses original owners. As the grasss health returned, ColoVista began to slowly introduce herbicides to kill off the infringing weeds and wild grass that crept into the fairways when the course fell into disrepair. The slow-burn method has paid off, restoring the course to much of its original glory.
There was a time when this was one of the destination golf courses in Central Texas, Andrews said. We have been working to get it back to that level.
ColoVista is now ready to reclaim its status as a destination for weekend golfers from all over the state.
We had a bunch of people come through a year ago and tell us call us when you get the place in good condition, Andrews said. We are calling those people now and letting them know, this course is ready for them to return.
The facilities 31 overnight cabins were filled to capacity the weekend of July 26-27 with out-of-town golfers. And though all of the facilities arent open yet, the group had nothing but glowing reviews for the course.
I had several people come up and compliment the course, telling me what a good time they had, Andrews said.
As the tourists return, ColoVista hopes to add more amenities to compliment the weekend golf experience. The on-site mansion is still being renovated, but Andrews hopes to have it open and hosting weddings within a few months. Other facilities, such as the swimming pool, will open as course traffic continues to rise.

Kristin Hawley, a mother of two from Highland, NY, is the winner of a brand new Springfree Trampoline, thanks to the Best in Backyards Start-of-Summer Giveaway.
Hawley was one of thousands of people to enter the month-long contest, which called for an email address and a "like" on the Best in Backyards Facebook page. She was "shocked" when she learned she won the prize, and Kellan, her 3-year-old son, was just ecstatic.
"We actually thought it was a joke when we saw the email," Hawley said.
The 8-foot, round trampoline was delivered and installed by Best in Backyards' factory-trained professionals. Hawley was impressed with how quickly the team got the trampoline up and ready for her little one. "The guys set it up super quick," Hawley said. "I think it took all of 10 minutes to put it all together, and it's wonderful.
The Start-of-Summer Giveaway is the latest in contests hosted by Best in Backyards. Prizes vary, and have included $500 store gift certificates.
"We love seeing the smiles on children's faces as they enjoy our products, from the Eastern Jungle Gym swing sets to the Goalsetter basketball systems to the Springfree Trampolines," said Rolf Zimmermann, the vice president of sales for Best in Backyards.
Best in Backyards is proud to sell Springfree trampolines, which come with top-of-the-line safety features. With Springfree trampolines, the jumping area is free of hard surfaces. The metal springs used on most traditional trampolines are replaced with fiberglass rods; the frame is hidden by a SoftEdge mat; and a FlexiNet enclosure relies on bendable rods, instead of rigid steel poles, to help prevent falls.
