Theres no need to pour concrete. Get off the ground with a simple treated-wood foundation. Build it just like a deck platform.

Walls and roof finish the addition and make it look like its always been part of the house.
Is a packed garage keeping you from buying your dream motorcycle? Or maybe you just need a little more space for lawn equipment, bikes or your woodworking tools. A bump-out addition may be the solution to your overcrowded garage. And in this article well show you how to build one. If you have basic carpentry skills and experience building a deck, shed or other structure, then you can build this garage addition. In this article, well focus on the tough parts of the project, like installing the beam and building the roof. Study Figures A C for construction details. A Materials List is available in Additional Information below.
Start with a traditional pressure-treated deck, then add the walls and roof.
In addition to a basic set of carpentry tools, youll need a hammer drill to bore holes for the concrete anchors, and ladders or rented scaffolding to finish the roofing and other exterior details. While not essential, a reciprocating saw will simplify the wall tear-out.
We spent roughly $2,000 for materials for this 5 x 12-ft. garage addition. Your costs will vary depending on the type of siding, roofing and windows you choose.
With a helper, plan to spend about half a day installing the beam and a long weekend framing the addition. Then plan to spend another weekend finishing the exterior. The time it takes to complete the project will depend on whether you finish the inside as we did. Keep in mind that you can hire a siding, roofing or drywall contractor to complete parts of the project youre not comfortable with.

If you will be constructing an addition or building a new garage or even replacing some of your existing siding materials consider your siding options. Your house and garage are long-term investments, so it doesn't pay to be short-sighted about the material you choose. Cost, longevity, and maintenance requirements can vary widely.
Wood siding and shingles are the traditional materials found on most older homes. Ship-lap or drop-lap siding comes in boards about 6" wide, still readily available at lumberyards. Each piece locks into the pieces above and below it. Wooden siding shingles (rectangular pieces of wood) are most often found on the top half of older houses, but occasionally cover a whole house or garage. Siding shingles are most often made from cedar, a relatively soft material naturally impervious to water, but also prone to splitting or cracking. The shingles are nailed in rows, with each row overlapping the one below it. Shingles are sold in bundles containing pieces of varying widths.
There are newer products that you might want to consider, as well. Fiber-cement lapboard siding, a fairly recent product, can have a smooth or rough-sawn wood grain appearance. This type of siding will endure more of the dings and bumps that can crack vinyl or dent aluminum, and it will withstand the ravages of weather, rot, fungus, carpenter ants and termites. On the other hand, it is not very easy to work with for most do-it-yourselfers, requires specialty tools to cut the planks, and will need to be painted periodically.
Vinyl siding is a popular choice for homes and garages, because it needs the least maintenance. It is inexpensive, installs quickly over existing sheathing, comes in many different colors, and, once up, needs only to be washed annually for maintenance. On the other hand, if it's hit soundly in the winter, it may crack; darker colors tend to fade in the summer sun; and, if you wish to change the color later, you won't be able to paint it. Damaged panels can be replaced with relative ease using just a couple of tools.
An alternative to vinyl is polypropylene siding, usually made from recycled materials and available in patterns that resemble various styles of traditional wood siding and shingles. It is installed in much the same way as vinyl siding and has many of the same advantages and disadvantages. However, since polypropylene is heavier walled than vinyl, it is less susceptible to strike damage, but also more expensive.
There are other siding choices that do not hold up so well. T1-11, hardboard lap siding, and OSB (oriented strand board) are all vulnerable to swelling, de-lamination, and/or self-destruction if any of the surfaces become exposed to the elements. You will have to be vigilant about painting all the joints (T1-11) or any scratches or tears in the covering (from lawn mowers, bicycles, etc.) that can let moisture enter.

Electric fences are now being used to ward off bears in Lincoln County and for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks bear management specialist Kim Annis, the fences are an effective way to prevent conflicts with people.
The fences have already been installed at two Libby homes, Annis said.
Annis said electric fencing is one of her primary tools in resolving bear conflicts in the area because they are simple and effective. Residents living in bear country can use fencing by participating in a loan program that allows for the use of a temporary electric fence for the spring, summer or fall seasons. Prior bear conflicts are not necessary to obtain a fence, as the goal is prevention not correction.
We work for the residents and the bears, Annis said. We dont want to chase conflicts around as they happen, but prevent them before they do. Electric fencing does work and it can work for more situations than people may be aware of.
The loan program may be a temporary source of prevention; however, through the efforts of the Fish, Wildlife & Parks and Defenders of Wildlife, a non-profit organization, a long-term solution is available. Defenders of Wildlife will reimburse 50 percent of costs associated with electric fencing used to protect bear attractants, with a limit of $500. The organization has helped more than 100 residents with fences in the past four years.
Libby resident, Joel Chandler, had a fence installed by Annis three weeks ago. Chandler doesnt have fully enclosed indoor location to store his trash, so Annis loaned and installed a 50-foot electrified net fence and energizer for bear prevention.
The fence works great, Chandler said. It went from a constant problem to no problem at all.
While more people are becoming aware of the electric fencing program, the reason for the program is perhaps the most important preventative measure.
Bears are one-time learners, Annis said. All it takes is for them to get into a persons trash, one time, and they know they can get it again. It is like learning your ABCs, once you know it, you know it.

Q: What are permeable driveways?
A: Summers longer, drier days and warmer temperatures offer ideal conditions for repairing or replacing driveways and sidewalks.
The most common driveway paving materials are asphalt or concrete, which are smooth and seamless. A second option is becoming more popular with homeowners: driveways that are made of permeable paving materials.
In addition to being a less-expensive method, permeable paving allows water to flow through it rather than diverted to the nearest sewer.
Rainwater that falls off roofs, runs down hard-surface driveways and fills rivers, ponds and municipal water systems may start out fresh. But as it travels, it picks up debris from the roof, oil and fertilizer from driveways and sidewalks, and a wealth of garbage from the street. This adds pollution to our waterways, and creates extra work for water-treatment facilities.
The beauty of permeable paving is that water is absorbed through the paving before it can reach our water sources. With many permeable-paving options, you can save money and be environmentally responsible.
Permeable-paving products run the gamut from low to high tech. The simplest of them is grass. Like a path worn in the woods, grass that is constantly pressed down by vehicles will form a natural and permeable driveway.
Two thin paving strips can provide a path for car tires. You can also use permeable material such as gravel for the strips. Paving strips might seem a rather antiquated approach, but they have been gaining in popularity as homeowners look toward sustainable construction.
One of the most common methods of creating permeable driveways is the use of loose stones and gravel.
Gravel has been supporting traffic of all kinds for centuries, but a modern addition is the use of plastic grids. These are created using recycled grids or blocks that form a hard driving or walking surface, but still allow water to flow through. Grids can be filled with sand and soil or gravel. They are long lasting, easy to install and maintenance free.
