    Four House Hacks for Moms

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Or, you can continue reading. Ive decided to share what I think are the most brilliant household tricks every mom should know. I hope youll find them as useful as I have.

Cleaning the goopy laundry detergent cup. If you use liquid laundry detergent, you know how goopy the pouring cup gets. No matter how hard you try to get all the liquid out, some of it stays in. It collects during future washes and - soon - the cup is so goopy (thats the only word I can think of to describe it) you dont want to touch it.

My mother in law and my husband taught me a trick that works perfectly to clean that detergent cup. The simple solution is: Throw the cup in with the load of laundry. It comes out clean, empty, and ready for your next load.

Rid your home of fruit flies. Ugh! I hate fruit flies - the little buggers have no fear and flit around landing on food and counters with no respect. For years, Ive used the apple cider vinegar trick. Simple. You fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar, cover it with plastic wrap, and poke a few small holes in it (with the prongs of a fork). The flies - who love vinegar - get in but not out.

Recently, however, I learned of an even easier remedy. You still use the vinegar in the bowl, but if you add a few drops of dishwashing soap, the flies will not be able to fly and will sink to the bottom of your bowl. No need for the plastic wrap and wondering if your holes are too large or too small. Good riddance!

Cleaning a stained dry erase board Some of us use our dry erase boards frequently and constantly write and erase grocery lists, to dos, and other important information. But, sometimes, even the best of us forget about our beloved dry erase board and when we return to it, we find the writing very difficult to clean. Ive tried everything to clean my dirty boards including eye glass cleaning wipes, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and the Mr Clean Magic Eraser sponge. These solutions all work, but I like the easy way when it comes to cleaning - and they still require some muscle power.

Hand sanitizer is the magic cleaning solution for the dry erase board. I cant remember where I learned about this trick, but it is definitely one that I remember. The next time you have some hard to erase writing on your dry erase board, try the hand sanitizer. I dont use it on my childrens hands, but I do use it on the dry erase boards.

The magic powder: Baking Soda The many uses of baking soda go far beyond baking. Combine equal parts of salt and baking soda and you have a solution for clogged drains. Pour in boiling water and let it sit overnight, then rinse through in the morning.

Use baking soda instead of the chemical-laden carpet cleaning powders. Baking soda neutralizes yucky carpet odors. You can also use it in smelly shoes, near pet cages, and to freshen your dishwasher.

My favorite use for baking soda, however, happens to be for cleaning my engagement ring. Every time I clean my ring, someone notices it. It gets so sparkly, and its so simple to clean. Using a soft-bristle toothbrush (like you used when you taught your children how to brush their teeth), baking soda, and water - you just brush gently. Thats it.

    Thomasville business destroyed by fire

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Firefighters from Thomasville City Fire Department and Hasty Fire Department respond to a fire at Top Notch Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning on Ball Park Road in Thomasville on Wednesday.

THOMASVILLE | A Thomasville business that refurbished mattresses was destroyed when a fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Robbie Binkley, battalion chief for the Thomasville Fire Department, an employee at Top Notch Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning located at 6006 Ball Park Road in Thomasville was working in the building when the fire broke out around 3:35 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

It is still under investigation, but there was one worker inside the building reconditioning mattresses, Binkley said. Something in the process of reconditioning the mattress caused the fire inside the building.

Top Notch Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning was located in a garage-like structure on property adjacent to Malaska Motorsports. According to a nearby business owner who wished to remain anonymous, the carpet and upholstery business had moved into the location only a week ago.

Binkley said fire was located on the east side of the building, which consisted of three garage bays with rollup doors. Firefighters managed to keep the fire contained to this area and prevented the fire from spreading to the other half of the building, which was being used as storage by another business. Although the fire only damaged half of the building, it was deemed a total loss.

Our guys were able to put it out just a few minutes, Binkley said. Actually, it didn't get into the other side which had a lot of heat and smoke damage. Mattresses are very flammable and caused they a lot of black smoke

The owner of business, Howard Stewart, was not available for comment. Thomasville City Fire Department and Hasty Fire Department responded to the call. Duke Power was called to cut electricity to the building to prevent any further possible damage.

10 things consumers complain about the most

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Priya Anand, MarketWatch

What irks people most? New data show that consumers complain most about having to deal with cars whether false sales ads or repairs, according to the Consumer Federation of America and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators.

The groups analyzed more than 250,000 complaints to 40 agencies across 23 states last year, finding that consumers are peeved about their auto experiences but also consider home improvement a nightmare, with issues ranging from roofing rip-offs to new home defects.

Read: I complained online and got $1,200 back

Here are the top 10 consumer complaints, and some MarketWatch tips on how to avoid having to make them.

    1. Auto: Misrepresentations in advertising or sales of new and used cars, lemons, faulty repairs, leasing and towing disputes

Heres the typical car repair saga: You go in for a simple oil change or tire replacement and they spring surprise repairs on you, claiming that your car is a death trap without those extra fixes and a bill to match. Some ways to avoid getting cheated by car mechanics: Take your owners manual out of the glove compartment and actually read it. It sounds obvious, but the manual is a guide as to what maintenance your car actually needs, and it helps to know what youre talking about when facing a mechanic who is peddling more repairs.

    2. Home improvement/construction: Shoddy work, failure to start or complete the job

Americans shell out $275 billion a year on home improvement work - patching roofs, repairing plumbing, remodeling and more, according to a Harvard University survey. And in that process, theyre scammed out of at least $17 billion, according to some estimates. Projects like deck improvements and basement remodeling offer solid returns on the investment, if youre taking on the challenge of home improvement. Home Depot and Lowes account for 80% of the home improvement industrys $153.8 billion annual revenue, estimates show, but bigger isnt always better. Here are 10 things you should know before embarking on a project.

    3. Credit/debt: Billing and fee disputes, mortgage modifications and mortgage-related fraud, credit repair, debt relief services, predatory lending, illegal or abusive debt collection tactics

Sublette launches fundraiser for community building

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUBLETTE Seventy-five years ago, in 1939, the historic Sublette Community Building was created. Over the years, the building has been the focal point of local activities. It has been used for dances, plays, talent shows, wedding receptions, church socials, meetings and reunions. Many years ago, there was even a bowling alley in the lower level. It also was the centerpiece during the Sublette Centennial in 1957.

There are many improvements needed to restore the building to bring it up to todays standards including upgrading the furnace, creating handicap accessibility, installing new bathrooms and a septic system, and remodeling the basement and kitchen. Several years ago, a group of local residents began the restoration process and painted the interior, resurfaced the hardwood floors, and installed new windows and doors.

Hoping to create an awareness of how valuable the building is to the community, the Sublette-365 organization over the past year hosted a series of Dueling Piano fundraisers that were held at the Community Building. Many friends and neighbors have now visited the building and are realizing how important the building truly is.

Recently, the Sublette-365 Organization and Community Building Board of Directors have decided to start a campaign to raise $75,000 to complete the necessary upgrades to the building. Sublette-365 is hoping to kick off the Fund Drive with profits derived from SubletteFest-2014. Local families and businesses are urged to consider making a one-time contribution or a five-year pledge toward the restoration and preservation of the building. Donors pledging $2,500 or more will have their name permanently recognized inside the building and on the Sublette-365 Facebook Page.

    OVERALL CONTRIBUTION ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION

    $2,500-$4,999 ($500-$1,249 Year Pledge)-Bronze

    $5,000-$7,499 ($1,250-$1,499 Year Pledge)-Silver

    $7,500-$9,999 ($1,500-$1,999 Year Pledge)-Gold

    $10,000+ ($2,000+ Year Pledge)-Platinum

Community minded citizens and friends of Sublette are encouraged to make a donation and/or pledge to the fund. The donations may be dropped off at Farmers State Bank of Sublette or mailed to Farmers State Bank of Sublette, Attn: Community Building Fund, PO Box 20, Sublette, IL 61367. A fund drive marker will be placed in front of the building, so community members can keep track of funding progress.

Town taking action on crumbling Walmart wall

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Details Published on Thursday, 31 July 2014 02:42 Written by Michele Scott | DrumhellerMail.com

Walmarts failure to fix their broken retaining wall has landed them in hot water with the Town of Drumheller. With the store stonewalling the Town on completing the repairs, Drumhellers Chief Administrative Officer will be paying a visit to the town solicitor seeking enforcement action. Ive asked that administration take it in front of the judge to get a compliance order from the judge, said Mayor Terry Yemen. The judge will set the timeline. The Town is concerned about the stability of the roadway that runs alongside of Walmart and would like the wall repaired to prevent the ground caving in. Were looking at it as a health and safety issue, too. In a July 15 letter to Walmart, CAO Romanetz requested a response from the retailer within seven days providing the Town with a definite construction timeline to fix the wall. The Mayor said the Town received no reply to their recent letter, but in conversations earlier this year, Walmart had told the Town it would be completing the repairs. Its a promise and a commitment made by them to have it fixed in the spring - it didnt happen. There are large areas on the retaining wall that are crumbling, and in two of those locations its easy to see the areas have experienced serious erosion. The Mayor said the reason Walmart gave the Town for not doing the spring repairs was that they had only received one bid for the tender they put out on the work, and their company policy requires at least two bids be received. Mayor Yemen was questioning why the company didnt make another call for tender on the work, Walmart was questioning the Towns jurisdiction, taking the position perhaps the province should be overseeing the matter because the store is located on a provincial highway right-of-way. Yemen says a review of the Town issued building permit to Walmart states the retaining wall is included in the permit, thereby nullifying Walmarts jurisdictional challenge and giving the Town the authority to take action.

Family asked to move out after retaining wall collapses

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MALACCA - A family here was shocked when their property's retaining wall collapsed following a night of heavy rain.

To add salt to the wound, Muslim Mazlan was advised by firemen to move out for his own safety.

"There are cracks on the side of my house and gaps have formed between the ground and the floor," said the 52-year-old businessman yesterday.

Part of the wall, located on higher ground, fell on his bungalow's porch area on Monday.

"The trees in my garden were swaying and it was raining heavily when I wanted to perform subuh prayers," said Muslim as he described the downpour.

"Then I heard a loud thud followed by a tremor at about 8.30am. I rushed downstairs to check and I heard my son shouting from the kitchen.

"I saw that the garden at the back of my house was gone," he said, adding that his wife and four other children, aged between 13 and 23, were also at home during the incident.

Muslim, who has been staying at the house which he built for RM650,000 for the last seven years, claimed that some construction work next door had contributed to the collapse of the retaining wall.

"Luckily, no one was hurt. However, I have lodged a police report," he said, adding that he would have to look for a temporary house.

Concrete and earth from the collapsed wall brought down palm trees and flower pots, and destroyed several aquariums filled with ornamental fish.

Construction worker injured in wall collapse along I-90

    - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A construction worker in Rosemont whose legs were pinned by a segment of wall that collapsed today was conscious at the scene and being treated at a hospital, according to the Rosemont Public Safety Department.

The worker, whose identity is being withheld until his family is notified, was assisting in the construction of a retaining wall along the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway.

Police said they received a call at 4:20 p.m. today requesting extrication of a man trapped underneath construction material.

Even before police arrived, a crane operator had removed the panel that had fallen on the worker, police Commander Gregory Nazuka said. First responders to the scene found the man in an easement next to the wall.

The man was conscious at the scene, Nazuka said, though the extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.
