County fair attendance dips, demo derby numbers rise

    - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The ever-popular demolition derby crashed its way to higher numbers than ever at the 164th Butler County Fair, but mid-week weather put a damper on overall attendance numbers.

Attendance figures show that 73,188 people turned out to the Butler County Fairgrounds last week, almost 5,000 fewer than the 78,065 who showed for the 2013 fair, according to Dan Martin, the fairs manager.

Wednesday it rained and we lost about 10,000 (people), Martin said. If we would have had that, we would have been right at 83,000, which is about our norm. If we can get between 80,000 and 85,000, were in good shape.

Attendance for the annual agricultural showcase has fluctuated in recent years, going from approximately 89,000 in 2009 to about 96,000 in 2010, 77,000 in 2011 and 66,000 in 2012, Martin said.

Having a slight dip in attendance for this years fair is not necessarily cause for concern, he said.

Its a hit, but its not earth-shattering, Martin said. We can obviously sustain without record attendance every day. Its just a little bit of a drop in revenue, so well tighten our belts a little bit and move forward.

The biggest overall draw to last weeks fair was Friday nights demolition derby, he said.

It always is, Martin said. Everybody always seems to come on Friday evening and enjoy the demolition derby. Its the most popular grandstand event we have.

A big crowd on Friday night not only boosts gate and grandstand revenue, it also creates a spillover effect that benefits food vendors and ride operators, he said.

Kent Taylor, treasurer for the Butler County Agricultural Society, said Fridays derby drew 76 entries, up from 50 to 55 in previous years.

BURLINGTON The Boone County Fair will start this year with a crash, as well as a bang.

Instead of a hot rod tractor pull, the 2014 Boone County 4-H and Utopia Fair will start with a demolition derby on Saturday, Aug. 2. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 7:30.

It will be a lot of fun, I think, said Sandra Cupps, Boone County Fair Board spokesperson.

She said that drivers who arrive in a vehicle from 1979 or earlier will get free entry for the evening and will participate in a noncompetitive car show before the derby starts. Only drivers receive free admission, and the event is open to cars, trucks, tractors and bikes.

Otherwise, admission costs $10 per person, just like the other nights of the fair.

Rides are open from 6-11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1-11 p.m. Sunday.

Everything is covered under that $10, said Cupps. After they get in, people only have to spend for food, and theres always food to be found.

Live pony rides have an additional charge.

Demolition of long-abandoned Gary hotel begins

    - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A demolition crew took the first major step in tearing down a 30-year eyesore Saturday in northwest Indiana.

A skeleton crew from Michigan-based Homrich Inc. tore down the pedestrian walkway between the long abandoned Sheraton Hotel parking garage and the Hudson-Campbell Fitness Center in the 400 block of Massachusetts Street in Gary, Ind., the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Garys Redevelopment Commission last year awarded Homrich a $1.77 million contract to demolish the hotel, parking lot and two pedestrian walkways, one over Broadway and the other over Massachusetts Street.

The hotel first opened as a Holiday Inn in 1968, closing four years later. It was remodeled and reopened in 1978 as a Sheraton Hotel, only to close seven years later.

The hulking, white structure, with broken windows and damage across each facade, is the main site visitors, workers and leaders in City Hall see out of the grand expanse of windows on the halls south side.

Three Homrich workers, wearing yellow safety vests, changed out several attachments to the large excavator shortly after they ripped into glass design elements and walls of the walkway over Massachusetts Street, with one block of the street closed to traffic.

By midafternoon, only a few concrete slabs, held together by steel rebar, remained attached to the fitness center, its windows protected by large sheets of plywood.

Piles of debris, mostly chunks of concrete and blue insulation, remained piled beneath the remainder of the bridge.

We began at 3 (p.m.) today, one worker shouted, as his colleagues worked to attach a pulverizer to the excavator. We should be done by 8 (p.m.) We want to get this stuff out of here.

Home demolition controversy headed to City Council

    - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The City Council is expected to get an earful about the issue of existing homes being demolished for infill projects on Thursday.

The Portland Historic Landmarks Commission calls the increasing number of demolitions "something of an epidemic" in its annual State of the City Preservation Report, which is scheduled to be presented to the council at 2 p.m. on July 31.

Preservations and neighborhood activists are expected to jam the council meeting to demand action.

"This epidemic of single-family home demolitions erodes the character and culture of our neighborhoods, promotes and accelerates gentrification, creates a negative environmental impact, and disincentives historic preservation," reads the report.

Home demolitions and infill projects are increasing as the economy improves. Approximately 200 demolition applications were received last year and the number is expected to be higher this year. Neighbors throughout the city are already complaining about single-family homes on large lots being torn down and replaced with one or two much larger homes.

The report call on the council to respond to the growing public concern over the demolitions. It asks the council to support the commission exploring ways to mitigate the impacts on neighborhoods, including:

A public process that allows for the review and delay of the demolition of any structure older than 75 years until the city's existing inventory of historic buildings in updated.

Adjusting local zoning codes to reduce the speculative increase in land values that are making such infill projects feasible.

Incentives to encourage the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings instead of demolition as part of the city's sustainability strategy.

Residential design guidelines that promote the use of high quality designs and building materials when replacing landmarks or structures that contribute to the historic character of the city.
