    Urban Aperture: Public Space

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Editors note:This is the eighthpost in aseriesby students at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. Each piece features an idea for an architectural intervention that wouldto better connect Torontonians with their ravine system. Thedesigns in this series were created as part of Professor Brigitte Shims Thesis Research Option Studio or final Thesis Studio. The work and text in this post is byJessica Ingwersenwhose bio you can find below.

Initial research for this project investigated the interface, the ambiguous line, that exists between Torontoand its ravines. After observing the citys ravinesfrom the outside in,it was clear that they aremainly hidden from view. This has caused them to be underutilized by those not directly inhabiting their borders.

The development of Toronto over the past century has lead to private ownership of parcels of land directly adjacent to the Don Valley Ravine. Landownership is predominantly residential, forming a barrier to the public wilderness below.

There is a disconnect between what the public isable to see and what it is able to access, which influencesour individual perspectives of the ravine. Viewsframed by the built environment present a snip-it of the ravine. Stitched together, these views forma narrative of larger a landscape.

The Site: Riverdale ParkRiverdale Park isan anomaly. A public space at the ravines edge, ithas the potential to better facilitate public access to the ravine floor. It alsoprovides the most spectacular viewof the city skyline. Historically, Riverdale Park used to be a place of gathering for the city. In 1960, the city used the siteas a landfill. Since then, it has beencapped, covered with sod; however this traumatic year drastically altered the citys relationship with thePark.

Sagebrush To Cheatgrass: Big Changes, Serious Consequences

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Our high desert landscape may appear as enduring as the mountains themselves, but in fact there are big changes going on out here.

Experts say in a few decades we'll be looking at a much different rangeland and in one way or the other we may all feel the impact.

Each year wildfires leave some of this land scorched and lifeless, but even as it recovers the land will be changed.

And those changes are lasting and they are visible. You can see them in a number of places if you look. The lighter patches among the darker sagebrush? That's from a scar of a fire.

These scars track the history of wildfire in our area.

Two years ago the Washoe Drive fire marched down the hill to the very back door of Galena High School in south Reno. Today, the scar shows us just how far and how close it came.

The sage, bitterbrush, greasewood and native grasses that once grew here did not return.

In their place, an opportunistic exotic, native to Central Asia, known as cheatgrass.

It made its way here, probably before the turn of the last century in shipments of wheat.

On its own it has little chance of getting a start in a natural healthy landscape. It needs a helping hand. Something or someone disturbing the soil.

Flora Grubb: What makes a landscape award-worthy

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

From a lacy shawl of Japanese maples shading a Berkeley hillside to bold colors painting a Tiburon slope, beauty is in the eyes of the judges -- and now of the voting public -- for this year's Considered Design Awards.

The nationwide online competition is sponsored by Remodelista.com and Gardenista.com to celebrate stunning home-interior and garden designs by professionals as well as do-it-yourselfers.

The sites' editors received hundreds of entries in 17 categories for this second annual event. They opted to spread the judging around the country, seeking out a "roster of design-world luminaries" for the task.

One of the Bay Area finalists in the 2014 Considered Design Awards contest from Gardenista.com is this stunning hillside of color in Tiburon, designed by Arterra Landscape Architects. ( Michele Lee Willson )

In the Bay Area, they tapped Flora Grubb, garden designer and owner of San Francisco's chic Flora Grubb Gardens, to tackle the best professional landscape category.

We caught up with Grubb at the nursery -- an oasis in the industrial Bayview district -- to talk about what makes for an award-worthy garden, whether created by a professional or homeowner.

When we arrived, she was poring over photos to whittle down 29 entries in her category to five finalists, with the winner to be selected by the public in online balloting.

"It's tough to judge because they're all so impressive," Grubb said. "These are beautiful gardens at what could be considered estates. It's not going to be easy."

She did manage to narrow it to five, however, selecting three Bay Area landscapes among the finalists -- a modern Pacific Heights setting designed by Terremoto in San Francisco; a colorful hillside in Tiburon by Arterra Landscape Architects; and a calming "outdoor room" by Mary Barensfeld Architecture for a home in Berkeley. (See more on these gardens in an accompanying article.)

Public voting in all categories remains open through Aug. 8, and winners will be posted on the Remodelista and Gardenista sites Aug. 9.

The detailed structure helped Herb win a bronze medal in the state apprenticeship awards and local apprentice of the year.

It took him about six months to finish with help from his parents and teachers, one of whom happened to have detailed plans of Boyds unique design.

When the Victorian Apprenticeship Commission awards were announced the model was displayed in Melbourne for a week.

Sadly, it now seems to be lost, thrown away or forgotten. It was last seen in the former tourist information centre on Swan Reserve before it was relocated to Flagstaff Hill about a decade ago.

Herbs wife Lois has made several inquiries, including the city council and Tower Hill Reserve, without success.

Wed dearly love to have it back again just to show our children, she told The Standard.

CSE to fund stake buyout in clearing corp by selling land

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) is planning to sell assets worth nearly Rs 260 crore, which will enable it to buy a stake in a clearing corporation over the next six months.

The exchange has been in touch with Indian Clearing Corporation Limited (ICCL), the Clearing Corporation of BSE, and MCX SX Clearing Corporation to formalise an agreement, according to sources. CSE needs to either tie-up with a clearing corporation or pick up a stake in it clearing corporation to meet the norms for regional stock exchnages set by the market regulator.

CSE has appointed Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) to sell nearly three acres land parcel owned by it on E M Bypass. According B Madhav Reddy, Managing Director and CEO of CSE, the exchange is expecting at least Rs 260 crore from the sale.

In 2012, Sebi brought out new norms for RSEs, under which, they need to own a trading platform, with an annual trading of not less than than Rs 1,000 crore, to stay afloat. This apart, the net worth of the exchange should not be less than Rs 100 crore, said the norms. CSE was the only RSE to conform to the norms on trading platform and net worth, which impelled other RSEs to seek a tie-up with CSE. The exchange has its own trading platform called C-Star.However, CSE failed to meet the criterion set by the regulator of a tie-up with a recognized clearing corporation.Earlier, CSE had formalised a deal with ICCL, the Clearing Corporation of BSE, which settles the trades of both BSE, to execute trades on C-Star. However, Sebi raised objections to the deal.

The other option for CSE was to have its own clearing corporation, but this required a corpus of Rs 300 crore. The Sebi deadline to meet the new norms for RSE expired on May 30th.Thus, in April 2013, CSE had to suspend trading as it failed to comply with the Stock Exchanges and Clearing Corporations) Regulations, 2012.At present, at CSE, the daily turnover at BSE and NSE platforms is close to Rs 300 crore. This apart, its annual turnover in C Star was close to Rs 1000 crore before April 2013. At present, there are close to 200 active brokers in CSE.Meanwhile, CSE has already signed agreements with fours regional exchanges-the Madhya Pradesh Stock Exchange, OTC Exchange Of India (OTCEI) , Ludhiana and Bangalore Stock Exchanges to take over their operations.

Under the consolidation plan with Madhya Pradesh Stock Exchange, CSE plans to absorb its brokers, companies and employees and of the exchange. In addition, CSE also plans to open an office at Indore. In case of OTCEI, it plans to acquire its companies and members. For Lundiana and Bangalore Stock Exchanges, the plan involves migration of their listed companies to CSE. CSE was on the verge of extinction after being hit by one of the biggest scams in the history of stock markets in 2001. However, the exchange got a fresh lease of life following its demutualisation in 2007, when several entities, including BSE, picked up stakes in it.

Apart from BSE, there are 30 investors at CSE, including West Bengal Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation and several Kolkata-based private companies. CSE is the only regional exchange to have its own trading platform, the C-Star.
