Was man on slain Syracuse handyman's porch a murderer or a victim? Jury to decide

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man is on trial this week in the murder of a handyman in an overnight shooting on the victim's porch last year. Lynnquan Kellam, 27, admits being at Arthur Bullock's porch at 142 Fage Ave. when Bullock was shot to death.

But Kellam claims he was not the shooter, but a victim, as well.

Bullock, a popular handyman among his neighbors, was shot and killed while trying to help two men being robbed on his front porch around 2 a.m. May 31, 2013, police said.

Kellam was interviewed for eight hours in the week after Bullock's death, but maintained he was one of those robbed, not the perpetrator.

Syracuse police continued the investigation and a witness came forward accusing Kellam. He was interviewed again for six hours a month later, but his story didn't change, said defense lawyer Don Kelly.

Kelly believes that other witnesses that night may know who committed the robbery, but colluded to blame Kellam.

Kellam claims a bullet grazed Kellam during the robbery. He noted that police had a different "person of interest" before a witness came forward weeks after the crime.

Prosecutor Melinda McGunnigle is presenting her case, which includes video recordings of Kellam's second interview with investigators. Kellam is facing 25 years to life in prison if he's convicted. The trial is expected to go into next week.

The murder of Bullock, a popular handyman among his neighbors led to grief and fear after his death.

Kellam's case is before County Court Judge Joseph Fahey, who does not allow cameras in his courtroom. Kellam's photo was never released by Syracuse police due to witness identification issues.

Miller Family Gives Large Tract to City For Nature Reserve

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The city of Washington has been deeded more than 67 acres of land west of Grand Avenue to be maintained forever as a nature reserve.

The donation likely is the largest gift of land ever made to the city of Washington.

Officials have said they arent aware of any city the size of Washington that has such a large nature reserve.

City council members voted Monday night to accept a special warranty deed for the property from Miller-Post Property LLC.

The property will be called the Miller-Post Nature Reserve and be used for the purpose of retaining and maintaining land and water areas in their natural vegetative, scenic, open or woodland condition and to retain such areas as suitable habitat for fish, plants or wildlife, according to the deed restrictions.

Jacqueline D. Miller, manager of Miller-Post Property LLC, told the council that the seed for this decision was planted over 50 years ago.

Basically, we are the stewards of this gift of nature from God. It is up to us to take care of it and to nurture it, she remarked in addressing the council.

Miller said she, her late husband Dr. Frank Miller, and her late father, Dr. John Post, always wanted to keep the land in the natural state as a refuge for wildlife. Basically, that is what it is today.

She said other ideas for using the property were suggested but she rejected the idea of developing the land.

Miller said an article in The Missourian regarding tree restoration in the parks department started the thought process toward the idea of a nature reserve set aside to educate, acquaint our young people with nature and its marvelous attributes, learn about plants and animals.

The growth of The Barn Yard necessitated opening manufacturing facility in Ellington, owner says

    - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ELLINGTON The Barn Yard & Great Country Garages has grown so much in recent years that it necessitated buying a 2.38-acre property to build a new manufacturing facility, for which the town awarded the business a tax abatement this week.

The whole point of this manufacturing facility is to keep up with the demand weve seen for our customer products, said Christopher Skinner, vice president of The Barn Yard, a family business for 30 years thats known for its quality craftsmanship in making and selling sheds, garages, barns, gazebos, pavilions, and other structures.

The business also operates a retail location at 120 West Road, open since 2005.

Skinner said that with the growth in the business over the past few years, its really become a necessity to add a bigger production and bigger facility to keep up with the demand of our customers.

Skinner said that this past spring the company acquired the property at 9 Village St., where the new facility will be built, from its previous owners, the family members of a late elderly person. A house is located on the property, but Skinner said it wont be part of the companys manufacturing facility, meaning it will be renovated or taken down.

The previous owners owed $146,000 in back taxes on the property and were facing possible foreclosure. Skinner said that in acquiring the property, his company agreed to pay the full amount of the back taxes owed by the previous owners.

In a Journal Inquirer article Tuesday, it was inaccurately reported that The Barn Yards owners owed the back taxes and was facing foreclosure.

Skinner said The Barn Yard does not owe back taxes, does not have unpaid taxes on any of its properties, and was never facing foreclosure.

The Barn Yards 12,000-square-foot manufacturing facility set for Village Street will also house the business new corporate headquarters, as Skinner said the current headquarters is at the retail stores location on West Road.

He also said the business small manufacturing facility in Windsor Locks will be moved to the new facility on Village Street, although the retail store in Windsor Locks will remain open as will a retail store in Bethel.
