WorkBoat, the leading provider of news for the U.S. workboat market, has launched a one-day Regional Summit in Alabama in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico shipyard industry that will tackle challenges facing the industry.
The Regional Summit, The Changing Landscape of Shipyards, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club, & Spa in Point Clear. Topics to be covered include:
The Changing Face of Personnel With the advancements in technology, the landscape of the shipyard workforce is changing. Will a more specialized workforce be necessary in the future? Will companies such as Siemens and Rolls-Royce alleviate the personnel crunch some by using their own technicians? How are personnel challenges different for smaller yards as compared to larger ones?
State of the Industry in the Gulf Aside from the personnel problem, what other challenges face yard owners? Is the traditional shipyard becoming more of an erection yard, with specialized systems integrators doing more of the technical work?
Financing the Future Whether your company is a small business or big publicly traded company, capital is the engine that drives it. Where that capital comes from is one of the questions that this discussion will seek to answer. This panel of finance experts will help understand the state of the commercial marine finance marketplace, answer questions and help find solutions to the problems.
Registration for the Summit at the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club, & Spa in Point Clear, Ala., is available at: http://www.workboat.com/regional-summit-alabama.aspx. Advance Registration is $425. Onsite registration is $495.

Late yesterday afternoon, Wanaka went from a town without a swimming pool to a town with two swimming pools in prospect.
The existing Wanaka pool closed on Friday after an engineering assessment confirmed the building was a ''very low level'' earthquake risk.
That caused upset among swimmers who flooded the Queenstown Lakes District Council with comments.
Then yesterday at 5.15pm, council general manager operations Ruth Stokes sent an email to media saying the council was ''moving quickly'' to consider all options including the ''extent and cost of remedial strengthening work that would be required to reopen in the short term''.
But she also revived an idea for a new pool in Wanaka's Three Parks subdivision.
That idea was rejected by the council in March in favour of a $2.1 million upgrade and expansion of the existing pool, now closed.
Staff were ''already assessing options for upgrading the pool and adding a learners' pool, before Friday's closure,'' she said.
''Another possibility under consideration is to build a completely new facility at the Three Parks site along with the new Wanaka Sports Facility.
''We are continuing to evaluate the viability of those options,'' Mrs Stokes said.
Her email pipped by just one minute an email from the developers planning the huge Northlake residential development on the outskirts of the town.

A 25m indoor public swimming pool, land allocated for affordable housing, a childcare centre, convenience retail stores and sports facilities will be key features of a new housing development in Wanaka - dependent on Queenstown Lakes District Council approving a plan change later this week.
Hearing Commissioners for Northlake Plan Change 45 have recommended the re-zoning of 219 hectares of land in Wanaka to the north of Aubrey Road and in the vicinity of Outlet Road.
This proposed zoning will enable a range of residential and essential community facilities and the commissioners recommendation will be considered by the QLDC at its full council meeting this Thursday 24 July.
The plan change to re-zone the land from Rural General to a new Northlake Special Zone was prepared by John Edmonds & Associates Ltd, on behalf of three adjoining landowners.
Mr Edmonds said plans for the zone included a new indoor 25m pool to be built, operated and maintained by the developers.
"The new pool building, which will also include a gym, has been designed to fit with the Wanaka landscape, in the classic style of a high country station shearing shed. The pool will be permanently available for public use," he said.
When asked about the recent announcement of closure of the existing Wanaka public swimming pool, Mr Edmonds said the developers will approach the QLDC to discuss options to fast track the new swimming pool in Stage 1 of the Northlake development.
He said this could result in the new swimming pool being available for the public by 2015, and stated that options to be discussed could include changes to the current pool design to address Wanaka community requirements.
An important aspect of Northlake Plan Change 45 is the provision of land for affordable housing. Twenty serviced residential sections will be available to the public to buy at no more than $160,000, subject to an option in favour of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust so they can be offered to suitably qualified families through the Trust's equity share or other community housing retention method.
In addition the Northlake zone will provide for potentially another 235 medium density housing lots targeted at the affordable end of the market range.

COLUMBIA Developers clearing land in Columbia will now be required to use devices known as air curtain destructors when performing open burns.
The Columbia City Council voted unanimously Monday evening to withdraw proposed changes to the city's open burning ordinance. In place of the ordinance changes, the Columbia Fire Department will adopt an internal policy requiring an air curtain destructor be used on any open burn that calls for a Missouri Department of Natural Resources permit.

Air curtain destructors are placed over an open burn and function similar to large exhaust hoods. Vacuums in the air curtain inhale and filter the smoke and release cleaner emissions in the air.
A report issued by the Columbia Fire Department at the July 7 council meeting outlined suggested changes toCity Council bill 101-14, which would place increased restrictions on open burning on development sites.
The report recommended maintaining the current definition of open burning and requiring a permit for any fire with a fuel area of larger than 3 feet wide and 2 feet high. Fires smaller than this are considered recreational fires. The responsibility for inspecting and permitting open burns would remain with the Fire Department.
The Fire Department report also recommended requiring the use of an air curtain destructor for any open burn performed to remove the vegetative waste from clearing an area of 1 acre or greater.
Air curtain destructors will be required for open burns performed within 200 yards of the nearest inhabited dwelling for land-clearing operations smaller than 1 acre.

Have A Plan For Your Design Scheme
Before purchasing any items for your home, have a plan and know what your overall design scheme will be for your home or your space. Having a solid plan will allow you to buy pieces separately and have a much better end result. So if you end up buying a rug today, a table next month and a sofa next week, your plan will map out specifically the pieces you need to give you the look that you want.
Pick A Color Palette of Three to Four Colors
Take your time and pick out a color palette between three to four colors and carry these colors throughout your home. Choosing a simple color palette will create a nice flow and movement throughout the home from space to space. For example, if your color palette is navy, cream and gold; navy could be the dominate color in the family room, gold would dominate in the dining room and cream could dominate in the kitchen. Throughout each space, however, all colors will be present.
Use Neutrals As Your Backdrop and Add An Accent Color
Its completely understandable that for do-it-yourself interior decorators, it can be overwhelming to commit to certain colors, especially the three- to four-palette rule as discussed above. If you have a hard time committing to color, use neutrals as your backdrop and then accent in a color. So maybe your walls, floors, sofa, chairs and stone are colored in a great neutral tone and then you bring in pops of color with accent pillows, a rug, vase, bowl and maybe some great art. This way, when you get tired of the color red for example, you can just change out a few accessories and create a whole new look.

There was almost nothing George Lange could not build or fix.
He was a real all-purpose guy. He'd fix the plumbing and wiring at home, even though he was never really trained for that. He really did it all by instinct, said his daughter, Deborah Lange of Point Breeze.
George L. Lange of Murrysville, retired director of the Forbes Road Career and Technology Center in Monroeville, died on Saturday, July 19, 2014. He was 84.
Mr. Lange, a native of Natrona Heights, worked for many years as a graphic arts instructor in public schools in Canoga Park, Calif. He taught a curriculum that included printing and developing photographs in darkrooms, his daughter said.
In the late 1960s, Mr. Lange and his family returned to the Pittsburgh area, where he taught printing at the Forbes center, which offers training in areas such as advertising design, automotive technology and culinary arts.
He eventually became the center's director and retired in 1987. In 1982, Mr. Lange was president of the Greater Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Vo-tech education used to be sort of degraded as something the students did when they were not college-bound. He really did not agree with that view at all, said his daughter, a civil engineer and executive director of the Brownfields Center at Carnegie Mellon University.
Mr. Lange encouraged his four children and grandchildren to get an education.
Education was not only his profession. He encouraged us to get as many degrees as we could. His children and all of his grandchildren who are old enough have a degree, his daughter said.
Mr. Lange graduated from California State Teachers College, now California University of Pennsylvania, in 1956. He earned a master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh and served in the Navy Reserve.

BISMARCK, N.D. --Two Bismarck rural firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene where a Hoge Island home burned Sunday afternoon, but the two homeowners Craig Johnson and Connie Hofland were not injured. No firefighters had to be hospitalized.
The husband and wife were restoring the home at 9730 Island Road after it had been damaged in the 2011 flood. They hoped to move back by fall, Hofland said.
The home appears to be a total loss, according to Capt. Randy Jacobson of the Bismarck Rural Fire Department.
Al Klein, fire chief, said the cause of the fire has not been determined and the rural fire department has completed its investigation. The state fire marshall will not investigate it. The fire started in the garage. There was nothing suspicious in nature, Klein said. However, he said the familys insurance company may decide to look into incident further if a claim is filed.
Johnson said he had been using an ATV before the fire and parked it in the garage according to Klein. It is unknown if the ATV was the source of the fire. Johnson had been working outside the home when the fire started and nobody was inside. He said he heard a pop and saw the fire, Klein said.
Klein said wiring in the building was too damaged by the fire to determine if an electrical problem in the home and garage caused the fire.
The Metro Ambulance assisted the 17 firefighters as they worked on the fire for some five hours as the temperature peaked at 94 degrees, said Klein. Ten fire trucks responded to the scene at 3:20 p.m. The fire was controlled within an hour, but firefighters remained on the scene until 8:30 p.m. to ensure flare-ups and hot spots were extinguished.
Jacobson said they did their best to keep firefighters hydrated Sunday and would rotate them frequently.
The Mandan Rural Fire Department assisted the Bismarck rural firefighters with extra tanks and shuttling water to the scene, Klein said.
