Rain keeps lawn services, code compliance officers busy

    - July 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Staff photo: Joshua Lucero Joris Landscape Maintenance worker Jacob Hurt of Portales uses a weed trimmer at a Norris Street property. Lawn services and code compliance officers with the city have been hustling to catch up with increased growth due to recent rains.

By Joshua Lucero Staff writer jlucero@cnjonline.com

Recent rain fall has lawn services and the City of Clovis playing catch up with the amount of growth the moisture has caused.

Marcus Brice, chief code compliance officer for the city, said he has written more than 200 violation notices for weeds and still has 100 complaints that need to be addressed. And thats just in the past month.

A majority of it (the number of violation notices) is due to increased rainfall and a little bit of it is the fault of people not maintaining their property. said Brice.

Brice said that his staff cant go to one house without finding additional code violations in the same area as the complaint.

We can go to inspect one house and find 50 violations on the same block, Brice said.

Brice said even the city is having a difficult time keeping up with the weeds.

It seems like they (weeds) can grow a foot over night. said Brice.

Weeds more than 12 inches tall are in violation of the citys code, according to Brice.

Sustainable gardening: how to get started with rocks, native grasses

Sustainable gardening: how to get started with rocks, native grasses

Ripping out the front lawn and its bordering rhododendrons and replacing them with a landscape of native grasses, groundcovers, succulents and rocks once seemed an unfathomable act of defiance. No longer.

As many parts of the United States grapple with drought and rising water bills, "The thought of an English garden in the Central Valley of California is sheer madness. It wasn't meant to be, and it's sucking up precious groundwater we need for agriculture," said Ann Savageau, a design professor at the University of California at Davis, who recently traded in her lush green lawns for a desert look.

Instead of scoffing, neighbours stopped to ask her landscaper for his business card. Other California towns, including Sacramento and Menlo Park, have begun offering rebates to homeowners who remove their lawns.

Gardeners nationwide are feeling the effects of climate change. In the East, and other areas where heavy downpours have become more intense, a sustainable garden might include native grasses and other plants that do well in heavy rain and the dry weather that can follow.

"Awareness is changing in a way that is here to stay," said Brian Sullivan, a vice-president for landscapes at The New York Botanical Garden. "Yard by yard, region by region, the overall environmental impact of this trend, which I think is very positive, is substantial."

Mowing and watering a traditional lawn requires a lot of time, money, water and fertilizers. Increasingly, many home gardeners want to focus instead on edible gardens, and rethink the rest of their landscaping in a more environmentally sustainable and low-maintenance way.

It's sometimes hard to know where to begin, however, and few people have the funds or time to tackle a total garden makeover all at once.

    Some strategies:

In the FCS Huddle: New energy felt across Big Sky

    - July 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Park City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - With changes still coming across the NCAA landscape, Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton banks on the fact that he believes his conference is positioned as strong as it's ever been.

One of the ways to make the Big Sky's flagship sport - football - even stronger is for some of the struggling programs to finally become consistent winners - although the likes of perennial powers Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana State will be pushing back.

North Dakota, Sacramento State and Weber State hope to be headed into that direction after changing head coaches in the offseason.

They hope to be the surprise that Southern Utah was a year ago after the release of two preseason polls Tuesday at Big Sky Kickoff festivities. Sacramento State, under interim head coach Jody Sears, was picked to finish seventh in the head coaches poll and ninth in the media poll of the 13-team conference, North Dakota and coach Kyle "Bubba" Schweigert were picked 10th and 11th, and Weber State and Jay Hill were 11th and 12th.

Eastern Washington (12-3, 8-0 last season) was picked as a heavy favorite in both polls to capture a third straight Big Sky title.

Sacramento State, UND and Weber State have floundered in the Big Sky in recent seasons - with some high moments as well - and were in need of jump-starts under the hood. Sacramento State has had success beating FBS competition but not necessarily its Big Sky rivals, finishing 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference last year. Weber State was 2-10 and 1-7, and North Dakota 3-8 and 2-6 in just its second season of Big Sky competition.

The scenario involving Sears in the Big Sky is a bit weird. He was named Weber State's defensive coordinator in 2012 only to be elevated to interim head coach a few months later following John L. Smith's departure. But Sears was fired after a 4-19 record over two seasons, only to be selected defensive coordinator at Sacramento State in January. Sure enough, three months later, head coach Marshall Sperbeck resigned and Sears was elevated to interim head coach.

"Yeah, run to Vegas. I have no clue," on the odds, Sears laughs.

With the fresh start, Sears will look to restructure a defense that struggled last season while his staff also relies on the dynamic Garrett Safron-to- DeAndre Carter passing combination and an 18-member senior class.

Said Sears, who also has Big Sky experience at Eastern Washington from 2000-07, including the 2003-07 seasons as defensive coordinator: "We started to identify some principles that you're going to cling to, continue to develop the team culture and let the seniors know that this is their team and we were going to go as they go. So, really, the leadership has been good. We'll see how it plays out in the fall."

Police arrest 3 for burglarizing vacant Sherman home 2 days in a row

    - July 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SHERMAN, TX - Three Sherman men are behind bars, accused of stealing property from a vacant home two days in a row. Residents who live in the neighborhood say burglary is a big problem on their block.

Tools, wire, and even a floor lamp are now missing from a vacant Sherman home on North Ross Street.

"They were breaking into the house," said Sherman police Sgt. D.M. Hampton. He says 61 year old Larry Thacker, 48 year old Kenneth Moss, and 59 year old Robert Riles were arrested Tuesday, after officers found a large amount of stolen property in their truck, in the alley behind the home on the 1600 block.

"A little window unit, just odds and ends kind of things, some tools, and they ended up getting some wiring," said Sgt. Hampton.

Sherman police say they got the call from a nearby resident who also saw a red truck at the house the day before.

Neighbor Jesse Martinez and his wife tell us thieves will steal anything that's not locked down, and they target vacant homes on the block, "It happens a lot you know sometimes we call and they'll get caught and stuff, it happens once or twice a month sometimes three times. I come out with my dogs and my flashlight, but I carry a stick or something."

Sgt. Hampton says the suspects took anything that could be sold, probably to sell as scrap.

69/82 Metal Recyclers say there's no way to tell if someone's bringing in stolen materials, but before they buy from anyone they require a photo ID and a license plate number. They also tell News 12 hundreds of people come through the scrap yard on a daily basis, and every sale is captured by surveillance cameras.

All three suspects in this case are charged with burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony.
