Sack Home Minister, Esscom Heads Over Mabul Assault, DAP Tells PM

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Details Published on Monday, 14 July 2014 15:06

Teresa KokKUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Najib Razak must not compromise and remove the home minister and all those who are in charge of the East Sabah Security Command (Esscom), for failing to secure the porous waters off Sabahs east coast over the past year, DAPs Teresa Kok said today.

The vice-chair of the opposition party criticised the prime minister for allegedly making excuses for the poor management of Esscom formed in March last year following the assault on Lahad Datu by armed militants from the South Philippines by saying that the offshore security outfit was understaffed.

She added that it was unacceptable for the federal government to still be talking about personnel deployment when the region had already suffered a string of abductions over the past nine months.

The prime minister should have expressed his disappointment and even anger that there could still exist such weakness and problems, Kok said in a statement.

In fact, he should reject such explanations and take tough actions on this latest security breach. Heads must roll and if a new home minister needs to be appointed, Najib must do it without hesitation and delay, the Seputeh MP added.

Najib was quoted by national news wire Bernama as saying last night that it was clear there are weaknesses in the deployment of personnel and security planning by Esscom, after gunmen launched an assault on the resort island of Mabul off Semporna on Saturday, killing marine policeman Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan.

His colleague, constable Zakia Alip, is believed to have been abducted by Filipino gunmen.

I am asking Essscom to review their security system in detail, if there are not enough personnel, then the number has to be increased.

For instance, in the incident at the resort yesterday, there were not enough personnel as the resort is big and this shows there are weaknesses in the location and planning of security on the ground, Najib was quoted saying.

Homeowner Blames Faulty Gas Tubing for Gas Leak During Lighting Strike

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WEB EXTRAS:

    CSST Lightning Safety

    Requirements For CSST Installation

    Bonding CSST

Fire officials are warning of a possible danger in millions of homes. The warning comes after lightning struck a home in Blacklick and hit a small gas tube. Those tubes are found in homes across central Ohio.

"You could see the lightning bolts hitting," says Jeff Payette. Within seconds, he says, the initial crack of thunder sounded like a bomb going off." He saysthree bolts hit his home.

Payette and the fire department believe the lighting traveled across his gutter line, knocking out the water meter before hitting his gas meter, sending a bolt of electricity through a yellow gas tube known as CSST or corrugated stainless steel tubing.

"Absolutely I don't want this piping in my house", says Payette. He says Columbia Gas told him a hole in the gas line was caused by the volts from the lightning strike, which caused gas to fill his basement.

"As soon as I checked the basement, I heard the hissing noise and the smell was sickening", he says. His wife feared, had this happened while they were at work, their children may have walked into a home ready to explode.

"Had they opened the basement door and flipped a switch, we would have had a real tragedy on our hands", said Payettes wife, Julie.

How did Edgar Allan Poe really die?

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Edgar Allan Poe comes to life in 'A Dream Within a Dream.' (Courtesy Nasreen Alkhateeb)

WASHINGTON -- Edgar Allan Poe's lifeless body has been found in a gutter, yet signs of the reclusive writer surface all over Baltimore. A team of muckraking journalists sift through the clues to find out what happened to him.

Welcome to "A Dream Within a Dream," an "immersive, transmedia production" that invites audience members to become part of the plot.

"We turn the story on its head," says co-writer, director and producer Nasreen Alkhateeb.

"It's not necessarily theater, film, dance or performance art. It's all of the above."

There is no stage and there are no seats. Instead, audience members walk through different scenes from Poe's collection and meet a cast of twisted and tragic characters.

Familiar stories include "The Raven," "The Pit and the Pendulum" and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Poe enthusiasts also have a chance to dive into more obscure poems such as "The Oval Portrait."

Each vignette in "A Dream Within a Dream" offers a clue as to how Poe might have died. Was he killed by a rival writer or a jealous lover?

History has never quite answered that question. Poe died in 1849 in Baltimore's Washington College Hospital after having disappeared for several days. Theories about the exact cause of death include excessive drinking, rabies, heart failure and murder. But details of his final days remain sketchy at best, and Poe's death will remain one of literature's greatest unsolved mysteries.

"A Dream Within a Dream," titled after a poem of the same name, uses that as its premise to immerse the audience in Poe's macabre world.

Bt300 million earmarked to repair Govt House

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An official source said the move had nothing to do with the tradition of new governments making feng shui-related adjustments to boost success and longevity of their administration.

Acting PM's Office secretary Panadda Diskul led a religious rite yesterday to worship the Govern-ment House's sacred statue and guardian spirits at the premises.

The rite was aimed at dispelling bad luck and any inauspicious elements as a result of lengthy political rallies and to welcome auspicious deities in light of a new government assuming office.

Apart from the rite, the landscape of Government House will be adjusted and key buildings - namely Thai Khu Fa, Santi Maitri, Command and Nari Samosorn - will undergo renovations.

The Nari Samosorn building, which was previously used as a news centre, will be turned into a reception area for government guests. The news centre will be moved to Command building.

The work also includes dismantling a media room near the Thai Khu Fa building, where reporters have gathered, worked and rested for 35 years since the Kriangsak Chomanan government. Reporters will now be asked to work at the Command building instead.

The plan to turn the reporters' room into a garden was criticised by veteran reporter Yuwadi "Je Yu" Thanyasiri, who said she could not accept that the reporters' room "was in the way" and had to be demolished. Officials in charge of the renovation said they would seek reporters' opinions before making a final decision.

The previous Pheu Thai and Democrat-led governments made changes to the complex according to recommendations by feng shui experts. History, however, shows that no matter how a new government tries to adjust the landscape to meet their feng shui beliefs, their ability to stay in power or leave office depends largely on their deeds.

The tradition of adjusting feng shui at Government House when a new government assumes power dates back a decade to the era of the Thaksin Shinawatra government. A native of Chiang Mai, the former PM replaced trees in the compound with northern plants and concrete walls with steel bars. He ordered the spirit house and the ancestral shrine to moved close to a wastewater treatment pond.

The Surayud Chulanont regime did not make major changes in 2007 to the compound - it just added auspicious trees to the garden.

Shirley BOS appoints interim treasurer, wiring inspector

    - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By M.E. Jones, Correspondent

SHIRLEY -- Selectmen at their previous meeting accepted the resignation of Treasurer Kevin Johnston and agreed to post the position internally as a temporary job before advertising for a permanent replacement.

Johnston has accepted a position working for the Town of Ayer and will leave July 28, concluding a 20-year tenure in Shirley.

"Ayer's gain is our loss," Selectman Kendra Dumont said last week.

Monday night, Chairman David Swain echoed the comment as the board presented Johnston with an official certificate of appreciation from the town.

"Kevin and I go back a long time," Swain said. "He's done an outstanding job."

Dumont added that when she joined the board six years ago, Johnson was always a reliable go-to who could answer most questions or get information she needed if not.

Later in the meeting, selectmen appointed assistant treasurer Janet Poitras as interim treasurer.

Poitras, who has worked for the town for more than 14 years and holds an associate's degree from Becker Junior College, cited experience in her current position in her application for the treasurer's position, as well as "time management skills" and the ability to "work well under pressure" and as part of a team.

As assistant treasurer since 2000, Poitras in her resume listed experience with payroll, employee benefits, cash management and report preparation as qualifications for the job.
