Is your grass looking brown this summer? If so, you may be able to make some changes so that it will be greener and healthier.
The foundation for a healthy, competitive lawn starts with an understanding of photosynthesis. You may have forgotten, but you probably at least heard this word in high school biology. It is the process by which plants take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sunlight and then produce carbohydrates and oxygen. Just as plant carbohydrates are a critical part of the human diet, plants also use these carbohydrates to maintain growth.
When turf grass is mowed too closely, we limit the ability of our turf to manufacture carbohydrates. A lack of plant food results in a weaker and diminishing root system. The above ground portion of a plant, such as turf grass, and the root system mirror each other. A shorter grass height will only support a shallow root system.
A higher cutting height will also encourage a denser stand by preventing weeds. Less sunlight that makes its way to the soil surface means less weed competition. While it may be a small difference, the soil surface temperature will be lower when a turf grass is mowed higher.
Fescue is by far the best turf grass for Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia as we live in an area where warm season grasses like bermudagrass often are killed by our colder winters. Fescue is a cool season grass and performs best at a mowing height of three inches. During the dryer and hotter part of the summer, a grass would survive better at a mowing height of 3 and to 4 inches.
Competitive summer weeds such as bermudagrass, crabgrass, goosegrass, and dallisgrass tolerate close mowing. When a lawn is mowed at two inches and below, these grassy weeds are more likely to become established as they take advantage of the open areas in the turf.
Many lawn management strategies such as fertilization, chemical weed control, dethatching, aeration, and over-seeding all cost you money. The goal for turf grass weed control should be to maintain a competitive, dense turf. The first step in this process doesnt cost anything. Just raise the deck.

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert talks to the media during a news conference in Independence, Ohio.(Photo: Tony Dejak, AP)
You shouldn't be known for the worst thing you ever did. As Dan Gilbert flew in a private plane to meet LeBron James last Sunday, he made notes about things to say, things he had been thinking about for four years, since the night James announced on national TV he was leaving Gilbert's Cleveland Cavaliers and taking "my talents to South Beach" and the Miami Heat.
Gilbert had watched this in Sun Valley, Idaho, then dashed to a computer and "in about 45 minutes" banged out an angry letter meant to reassure the fans. In it, he mocked the "King" and his nicknames, referred to his leaving as a "cowardly betrayal" and promised Cleveland would win a championship before James did.
USATODAY
LeBron James only takes 2-year contract with Cavaliers
"There were a couple of people who tried to talk me out of it," Gilbert tells me via phone from California. "Frankly, I didn't put it in front of enough people. It was boom-boom, put it up. That's something I've learned. When you're in an emotional state ... wait.
That letter came to define Gilbert as a basketball owner. ("If you Google me, it's the first thing that comes up.") He regretted it not long after he'd written it, but in the Internet world "posted" means "forever."
He pondered that as the plane descended into Florida. He and James hadn't spoken since that night. Four years. They'd seen each other a few times. "I'd sit on the baseline when he came back to play in Cleveland. He'd look at me from the free-throw line. Not good. Not bad. Just look."
Now he was scheduled to meet James, in secret, to discuss what seemed impossible just days earlier a return to the Cavs. The whole world was hanging on the news. But as Gilbert glanced out the window, for a moment he wasn't a billionaire Detroit businessman or an NBA owner. He was every guy seeing his ex-wife after the divorce, every teen guitarist seeing a former friend who broke up the band.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -
It's been months since repair work began on O'Neal Road, and according to residents, not much has improved.
Work began in the spring as part of a contract that called for repairs on multiple streets in the area. Density testing began Friday in hopes to get repairs rolling. But, residents are saying it's past time for the city of Gulfport to do something about the paving issue.
"The city could have taken care of this really quick if they wanted to," said Khari Enkosi, who lives in the Tracewood subdivision, just off O'Neal Road.
He and several of his neighbors have been in constant contact with the city. They're tired of the dirt and grime that has now become a norm for the neighborhood.
"I haven't washed my car since they started because when you come down this road, it's a dust cloud," said Enkosi.
The city did come out and patch some of the holes a couple of weeks ago, but, according to Enkosi, it didn't help much.
Kevin Flowers has lived in the area for 50 years.
"I moved out here when it was first dirt, and it was in better shape than what it is now," said Flowers.
Even though the road is no longer closed to traffic, he is having to turn around to avoid suspension damage on his truck and boat trailer.
