Nationally known tile expert Riley Doty is the tour leader for the July 20 walking tour, "Tiles and Terra Cotta in Uptown Oakland," sponsored by the Oakland Heritage Alliance. The tour begins at 12:30 p.m. at 17th and Webster streets, in front of the richly tiled landmark Howden Building.

On the walk, Doty will point out examples of the district's commercial buildings that exhibit a variety of styles built during the heyday of Art Deco and Moderne, from 1908 to 1931. The use of fired pottery materials for the exteriors of these structures will be highlighted, and Doty will provide information on the special maintenance, preservation, and restoration needs of such landmarks.

The Oakland Heritage Alliance tours are based in part on the work of the Oakland Cultural Heritage Survey and the resources of the Oakland History Room at the main branch of the Oakland Public Library.

Doty has his own tile-installation business and has been working on projects in the Bay Area for 35 years. He is one of the founders of Artistic License, a group of building restoration specialists. The members share skills and information at monthly meetings and seek to educate the public about the importance of quality restoration work.

Founded in San Francisco in the early 1980s at the start of the Victorian "Painted Ladies" craze, Artistic License soon became established as a respected consortium of painters, gilders, wood restorers, window specialists and the like with a growing "word-of-mouth" reputation among satisfied owners of old buildings.

Soon images from magazines and books profiling the group's work made their way into mainstream preservation circles around the country. Today, Doty and the other specialists are often called upon to consult on projects beyond the Bay Area.

Another of Doty's organizations geared to tile enthusiasts is The Tile Heritage Foundation (www.tileheritage.org).

Doty has long been fascinated with Oakland's one-of-a-kind Howden Building. He traced its history and learned that it opened as a showroom fore a family owned-tile business founded in the 1920s by Robert Howden and sons Robert Jr. and James.

During his research, Doty was even able to track down Robert Howden's grandson, now in his 80s, who provided more background about the company.

Designing and installing your own automated lawn sprinkler system requires careful planning and some testing long before the first shovel of dirt is turned. The process isn't difficult, but there are a number of steps, and most have significant impacts on all the others. Take it one step at a time, and you're less likely to feel overwhelmed.

Buy a pressure gauge that will fit on a garden hose connection. You will be able to find one in the irrigation supply section of most home centers. Thread the pressure gauge onto an outside faucet, near where you are planning to connect to your home's water supply. Turn the faucet on and the dial will indicate the available water pressure. Now take a 5-gallon bucket and time how long it takes to fill it. Divide 300 by the number of seconds it takes to fill the bucket and you have the number of gallons per minute your water system can deliver. Working within the limits of your pressure and volume findings will ensure a successful design.

Sketch out your yard and any beds you plan to water with the system. Working with the performance charts from the sprinklers you've decided to use for the job and the pressure and volume results from your testing, lay out the sprinklers on your sketch with each sprinkler set up so that its radius of reach just touches the heads to either side and directly across from it. This is called head-to-head coverage, and is vitally important to a successful system. Larger areas will require gear-driven rotors. Smaller areas will require fixed head sprayers.

Once you've laid out the sprinklers, calculate how many sprinklers you can have on each zone valve, based on the GPM of each head. For example, if you have 15 GPM available at 35 PSI and the watered area in one section of your yard is 35 feet wide, using Rain Bird 5000 rotors and covering a half circle with each, each rotor will consume 3.33 GPM. This means you can have 4 heads per zone and maintain performance.

Once you determine all your zone divisions, you can sketch your plumbing tree, showing the main trunk line, valve lines and the lines from the valves to the sprinklers.

Relatives have identified five of the seven people killed in a massive fire that broke out in the predawn hours in a Lowell, Mass., apartment building.

Family members believe that Torn Sak, his longtime partner, Ellen Vuong, and three of their children - a 7-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy - were among the seven people who died in the blaze, which ripped through the three-story structure just before 4 a.m. Thursday, Vuong's brother, William Vuong, told the Los Angeles Times.

Vuong said his family was grief-stricken, and declined to comment further.

Two of the couple's sons escaped, said Sak's brother, 20-year-old Thearan Sak. He told the Associated Press that his brother enjoyed fireworks and had stored some in the family's apartment. Authorities acknowledged that they had heard witness reports of explosions similar to fireworks going off in the building before or during the fire, but added that they would not speculate on the cause of the blaze.

Authorities have not identified the seven victims, saying only that four adults and three children died. Witnesses told the Associated Press how tenants jumped out of windows to escape the inferno and how one woman passed a baby out of a window to rescuers below.

Mayor Rodney Elliott called the fire horrific at a news conference. Today is a tragic day in the city of Lowell, he said.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the building did not have a sprinkler system, but was not required to because of its age. Whether it would have made a difference or not is speculation that we should not enter into at this time, Coan said. But clearly, sprinklers are a life-saving tool.

Coan said there was a fire alarm system installed in the nine-unit building, but that none of the firefighters or witnesses at the scene reported hearing smoke alarms going off when they arrived. Fire officials will examine whether the system was working.

Aerial footage taken by local TV stations showed the entire roof of the building burned through and external walls charred.

Authorities said the fast-moving blaze was discovered by a Lowell police officer, who heard screams for help coming from the building. Other residents and neighbors ran down the street to the nearest fire station, about 100 yards away, and alerted firefighters, Coan said.
