if absence makes the heart grow fonder, then that might explain why summer is so treasured in the mountains. These days are precious, and theres no better way to savor the beauty of the Vail Valley in the summer than on a patio, porch or deck. Its not a secret just stroll by La Bottega on any given day and lunchtime lingerers dominate its deck.
However, theres no need to battle the crowds for your place in the sun. There are plenty of porches and patios that are perfect for summertime sipping or mid-day malingering you just have to know where to look.
Craving the creek
Theres nothing like having the burble (or roar, at times) of the creek as your soundtrack while enjoying a beverage or bite to eat. While Up the Creek in Vail has one of the best creek-side locations in the valley, there are several other under-the-radar options to wet your whistle.
The Fitz at Manor Vail is one of the best-kept secrets in the summer. Just look up as youre strolling along the path on the way to the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. The Fitzs deck is elevated, with gorgeous flowers and views of Gore Creek. An added bonus? Visit The Fitz before the concert and receive complimentary event parking.
Sometimes the secrets in the name: Atwater on Gore Creek, located at the Vail Cascade Resort, has a patio that makes it feel as if youre almost sitting in Gore Creek. Easily accessible on the bike path, Atwater has an excellent craft beer menu and is convenient for a beverage after (or during) a ride and is often overlooked for locations in Vail or Lionshead villages.
Go through the gates
Though the gates at Beaver Creek and Cordillera offer an opportunity to slow down and say hello to the friendly folks working there, they can also be a bit daunting. However, behind these gates are some seriously under-utilized decks that are ripe for the sitting.
Go through the main gates at Beaver Creek and take the first left. Mirabelle, located in an 1880s log home, is known for chef Daniel Jolies cuisine. While the front porch is a great location, the back deck is the ultimate destination for summertime dining. Perched right above the creek, its an oasis thats often overlooked, save by those in the know.
Want expansive views and spectacular sunsets? Head down U.S. Highway 6 and through the gates at Cordillera to Mirador. Located at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera, Mirador is open to the public but often under-utilized. Go for happy hour and enjoy small plates from chef Collin Smelser; the crab and artichoke pizza is spectacular.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics have swung a trade that would see the Cavs create salary cap space by unloading guard Jarrett Jack, the US media reported on Wednesday.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the move would free more than $US21 million ($A22.7 million) in cap space for the Cavaliers, who are reportedly interested in getting LeBron James, the biggest prize in free agency, to return to Cleveland.
The maximum deal the Cavaliers could give James next season is about $US20.7 million ($A22.40 million).
James spent the first seven years of his career in Cleveland before joining Miami, where he has won two titles in four years.
Nothing is official until the NBA lifts its moratorium on Thursday on signings and trades.
But Jack tweeted about the trade "I got news" on Sunday.
Jack also listed himself as a Brooklyn Nets point guard on his Twitter profile.
James met in Las Vegas with Miami Heat officials for more than an hour on Wednesday but left the meeting without making a decision on his free agency, ESPN television reported.
James attended the meeting with his agent Rich Paul, while the Heat group included president Pat Riley and general manager Andy Elisburg.
ESPN said that James wanted to talk with his family before deciding whether to stay in Miami or move on.

When the weather gets hot, the air in homes can become humid, inviting mold to settle and thrive. Enviro-Test can get homes tested for mold and offer tips to help prevent mold during the summer months.
In the summer, a closed house with the air conditioning turned off will have higher humidity levels than an air-conditioned home. A vacant house also receives little or no sunlight through closed shades and no air movement with the fan off and the doors locked. If a homeowner left the air conditioning running, it would have cooled the home and removed moisture from the air and circulated and filtered the air.
Molds thrive when the humidity levels exceed 70 percent. Because humidity levels vary from day to day, the thermostat should be left at or below 74 degrees, and the fan should be set to "on."
Normally, mold cleaning and remediation processes disturb the spores, which become airborne and can settle on unclean or untreated surfaces, where they continue to thrive in the humid, warm, dark conditions.
Enviro-Test offers the safe testing homeowners need to educate themselves about what can be within their home. Beat the heat this summer and get homes tested for mold. To learn more, call 800-228-7838.
