Eau Claire, WI (PRWEB) July 10, 2014
The new, $44.5 million Centennial Hall has opened on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Eau Claire. National architecture and engineering firm SmithGroupJJR partnered with La Crosse, Wisconsin-based River Architects to design the 182,000-square-foot building.
Centennial Hall houses the College of Education and Human Sciences and consolidates teacher education that was previously split among three buildings dating back to the 1950s. It is the first new academic building on the UW-Eau Claire campus in more than 30 years.
SmithGroupJJR and River Architects worked extraordinarily well together to create a beautiful and functional structure, said Dr. Gail Scukanec, dean of the UW-Eau Claire College of Education and Human Sciences. The new Centennial Hall allows for greater operational efficiencies and greater collaboration."
The four-story building, located between Schneider Hall and Zorn Arena in the central campus mall area, also houses the Departments of Education Studies, Special Education, English, Languages and select student support services. Major spaces are dedicated to distance education, active learning classrooms, teacher education methods labs, general labs and open study areas, along with a total of 165 offices. Noteworthy are Centennial Halls 19 general assignment classrooms ranging from one 160-seat to five 45-seat rooms that offer significant new classroom space for use by the entire campus.
Students have a variety of choices for their collaborations. Options include informal living room spaces scattered throughout the building, ranging from quiet, four-student nooks to a bustling, multi-story cyber caf with views of the Chippewa River, which runs through the campus and inspired the buildings playful, undulating south faade.
Design features nighttime presence, glass artistry honors the Hmong people With its brick and stone exterior, Centennial Hall was designed to complement the campus oldest building: the circa-1916 Schofield Hall, which it faces from across the quad. The new building also blends harmoniously with the new Davies Student Center and venerable Schneider Hall.
Among Centennial Halls most dramatic design features are the buildings multi-story, glass corners that offer light-filled, social interaction spaces during the day.
As night falls, the glass corners act as beacons of light, earning them the nickname of lanterns,' said Coty Sandberg, LEED AP BD+C, SmithGroupJJR project designer.
The design team maximized the amount of natural light drawn deep into the building to provide a bright indoor environment to its users. In addition to the buildings lanterns, designers strategically located windows to allow all public corridors outside views at the end. A rhythm of tall windows and glassy, multi-height spaces are prominent throughout the building.

Hunt Valley Towne Centre is expanding again. This time, though, the expansion is taking the form of upscale apartments, the first residential component to be added to the project since its inception about a decade ago.
The apartments are being built on a 6.5-acre parcel that Greenberg Gibbons Commercial Corp., developer of Hunt Valley Towne Centre, 118 Shawan Road, Hunt Valley, sold to AvalonBay Communities, a national residential developer.
"We had designated a residential area" in the original Hunt Valley design, Tom Fitzpatrick, Greenberg Gibbons' president and chief operating officer said last month. "We went to multiple residential developers" for bids on the property. He declined to provide a sale price for the land.
Fitzpatrick said the sale of the land for residential use completes the mixed-use intent of Hunt Valley. "We had the retail and the office," he said. "Now, we're bringing in the third component, the residential."
AvalonBay is calling the residential project Avalon at Hunt Valley Towne Centre. It will consist of a five-story building with 332 upscale apartments that will rent at market rate. The building is located on the east side of Hunt Valley, adjacent to the Pier 1 retail store. Construction may begin in fall of 2014, with completion in spring of 2016.
Greenberg Gibbons is developing and will manage 30,000 square feet of retail space that is going into the ground floor of the building.
Headquartered in Arlington, Va., AvalonBay owns and manages 276 apartment complexes with more than 82,000 apartments nationwide.
AvalonBay has already gone through the Baltimore County approval process and received zoning approval to proceed, according to Fitzpatrick. He also said that approval from tenants of Hunt Valley's retail portion was not required for the residential development to move forward.
Fitzpatrick said that Greenberg Gibbons owns other, undeveloped land that is part of the retail center of Hunt Valley. But, he added, "We don't anticipate selling off additional land at this time."

WAPELLO, Iowa Repair bids for roofs and other building parts damaged during an April hailstorm were accepted by the Wapello School Board on Wednesday.
The largest bid accepted, contingent upon approval from the schools insurance carrier, was one from Triple C Roofing, Inc., Woodbine. The company bid $97,971 to repair damaged foam roofs at the elementary and secondary campuses.
The board accepted the Triple C Roofing bid after agreeing a lower bid from Pella Roofing and Insulation, Vinton, had not been submitted properly.
A $14,260 bid from Shafer Construction, Wapello, was accepted for the repair of the administration building roof. Shafer Construction also received the nod from the board to repair damaged asphalt roofing, vinyl siding and miscellaneous gutter replacement on several buildings. Its bid for the work was $19,850.
Shafter Construction also was the low bidder to repair the greenhouse roof and sidewalls. Its bid for that work was $9,270 for the roof and $14,316 for the sidewalls.
Myers Construction, Sperry, won the general lighting and HVAC equipment repairs with a bid of $44,200.
The board also accepted a $9,032 bid from Daktronics, Brookings, S.D., for a new football field scoreboard. The cost, which will be covered through a donation from the Pepsi Co., does not include installation, which officials estimated would be about $4,400.
A bid for two cameras and other surveillance equipment in the schools new weight room also was accepted by the board. J&S Electronic Business Systems, Burlington, submitted the low bid of $5,525.

WAPELLO, Iowa Repair work on several buildings on the Wapello school campuses that were damaged during an April hailstorm will finally begin, after the Wapello School Board approved several bids on the work during its meeting Wednesday.
The largest bid accepted, contingent upon approval from the schools insurance carrier, was one from Triple C Roofing Inc., Woodbine. The company bid $97,971 to repair damaged foam roofs at the elementary and secondary campuses.
The board accepted the Triple C Roofing bid after agreeing a lower bid from Pella Roofing and Insulation, Vinton, had not been properly submitted. Officials said the Vinton firm split what was directed to be a single bid into two parts. Although the total bid of $92,200 was lower than the Triple C bid, officials said they could not legally accept it. Board chairman Duane Boysen abstained from the vote because he was listed as a reference by one of the companies.
A $14,260 bid from Shafer Construction, Wapello, was accepted for the repair of the administration building roof. Other bids submitted for this work included $15,300 from Myers Construction, Sperry; and $30,466 from SG Construction, Mediapolis.
Shafer Construction also received the nod from the school board to repair damaged asphalt roofing, vinyl siding and miscellaneous gutter replacement on several buildings. Its bid for the work was $19,850. Myers Construction submitted a $30,490 bid on the work.
Shafter Construction was also the low bidder to repair the greenhouse roof and sidewalls. Its bid for this work was $9,270 for the roof and $14,316 for the sidewalls. Myers Construction bid $10,800 for the roof repairs and $14,400 for the sidewalls.
Myers Construction won the general lighting and HVAC equipment repairs with a bid of $44,200. Odessa Mechanical Contracting, Wapello, bid $45,430 on that work.
The school board also accepted a $9,032 bid from Daktronics, Brookings, South Dakota, for a new football field scoreboard. The cost, which will be covered through a donation from the Pepsi Company, does not include installation, which officials estimated would be around $4,400.
A bid for two cameras and other surveillance equipment in the schools new weight room was also accepted by the board. J&S Electronic Business Systems, Burlington, submitted the low bid of $5,525.
Per Mar Security, Davenport, submitted a bid of $5,995.
