Demolition begins on old Bellingrath Middle School building

    - July 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Demolition work started on Wednesday at the old Bellingrath Middle School on Court Street.

"For our neighborhood, and our community, I think it's the most appropriate thing that could happen at this time."

That's how Lois Johnson describes, the demolition of the old Bellingrath Middle School Building.

Although the middle school has since been rebuilt and reopened, the old building just sat here, creating an eyesore for the community.

"For a good period of time, the residents were saying when are they going to demolish Bellingrath," said Frank Jenkins, President of Haardt Estate Residents Association. "That has been the undercurrent of comments I have received over the past couple years from the residents. They're very pleased to see that demolition has begun, and the comments are positive now."

Besides being an eyesore, the building also attracted trouble because of the easy access it provided.

"The city and school district has moved ahead with something that could have been difficult or trouble making if it had not been done at this time because empty buildings, no matter where they are, can cause all kinds of problems," said former MPS Assistant Superintendent Lois Johnson. "It became a hazard too because the windows had been knocked out and there were things falling from the building that tend to hurt people, so we were pleased when they put the fence around it to keep people from going in there and getting hurt or hurting other people."

Another hazard was found at the demolition site earlier today. Crews found a small piece of asbestos in wrapping on a pipe, which halted demolition.

That piece was eventually removed and demolition resumed.

Busy Bee: Chelsea Prevost showed no hesitation in doing damage during the compact event. From the opening flag wave, she flew around in her No. 11 car designed like a bumblebee and hit everything she could. The strategy took its toll, though, as she ended up finishing sixth.

Pile-up: Bryant Frank ended up with a golden opportunity in the compact division when six cars found themselves stuck in a corner. The only free remaining car, he repeatedly reversed to the middle of arena, and smashed the crowd of cars at full speed until he was named the winner.

Demolition to begin soon for construction of new Wynnewood Whole Foods

    - July 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A major change in the landscape of a part of Wynnewood is getting closer.

Nearly a year after Lower Merion Township granted preliminary plan approval, as buildings on the tract emptied and sat dark, the developer of a new Whole Foods Market at Lancaster Avenue and East Wynnewood Road has been taking final steps to prepare for demolition.

Dan Fuchs, vice president of development at WP Realty, said in an interview Wednesday that it has been working to have various utilities to the existing buildings from Lancaster Avenue to 23 E. Wynnewood Road disconnected, a process that must be completed to pull demolition permits.

One of those steps was to have been taken overnight Wednesday to Thursday, July 9-10, when PECO was to have shut down service to the area. The shutdown, scheduled from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., would have affected some other electric customers in the vicinity.

Because of the damage and outages from Tuesday nights storms and with more thunderstorms forecast for Wednesday night the service interruption is being rescheduled, according to PECO spokesman Greg Smore.

We have to be sure we have all of our resources available to restore storm outages, Smore said. Some customers in Lower Merion who lost power Tuesday night have been told not to expect their service to be restored until Thursday or Friday.

WP Realty is the owner of most of the parcels in the block between Lancaster Avenue and Penn Road, the exception being the Citizens Bank parcel. A first portion, extending up to the former Alexs Lemonade Stand headquarters, will become the site of a 45,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market, as it moves from its current location just west on Lancaster Avenue.

The new two-level store, nearly three times the size of the existing market, will include a pub and caf, with about half of its parking in a structure under the building on East Wynnewood Road.

Seven older commercial buildings, including two large office buildings and the former Yucoa Plaza retail strip, will be razed.

WP Realty also has preliminary plan approval for a separate development from 29-39 E. Wynnewood Road, where additional buildings, including a notable mid-century modern bank building at Penn Road, will also be demolished. A new retail building and bank are planned for that site. Continued...
