Suit 'em Up Blackjack 10 July 2014
By John Grochowski
If all other rules are equal, blackjack players face a lower house edge when fewer decks are in play. Thats mostly because theres a greater frequency of two-card 21s with fewer decks, and players collect 3-2 payoffs or 6-5 in bad games while the house takes only even money on dealer blackjacks.
However, some side bets have lower house edges when more decks are used. Thats the case in Suit Em Up Blackjack from CRE8TV Games. I first saw the Suit Em Up side bet at Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas in 2012, and since then its gone live in seven Las Vegas casinos. Most recent is the Tropicana, which installed four tables and now is looking to increase to 12.
That its been successful so far makes it likely well see it in other parts of the U.S. before long. New table options never make a big splash all at once, like hot new slots. They have to prove their value at a small number of casinos before others will fork over the fee to add it to their pits.
Suit Em Up is a side bet that your first two cards will be in the same suit. Its an adjunct to blackjack, and since its decided on your first two cards, it doesnt affect strategy on the main game.
The biggest payoff comes when you have two Aces of the same suit. That pays 60-1. suited blackjacks pay 10-1, so if you get an Ace of clubs, for instance, a King, Queen, Jack or 10 of clubs will give you a nice payback above what you can expect on the regular game.
From there, the pay table goes to 5-1 on a suited pair, 3-1 on a suited 11, and 2-1 on any two cards of the same suit.
You cant play Suit Em Up on single-deck games, because suited pairs are impossible. Theres only one Ace of spades in the deck, so if youre waiting for a second for that 60-1 payoff, its not coming.
CRE8TV provided its mathematical workup for two-deck, six-deck and eight-deck games. It shows a 9.41 percent house edge in a six-deck game, 3.41 percent with six decks and 2.67 percent with eight decks. The double-deck house edge is too high to be playable, while the others are pretty normal for side bets. The house edge of the most popular blackjack side bet, 21 + 3, is 3.24 percent in a six-deck game.

The former Taylor School building, 3700 Benson Road, has been reconstructed to meet the needs of Community Bible Church.
Its time to share the news: Community Bible Church is here and ready.
The members of Community Bible Church in Trenton are welcoming visitors to a family fun event on July 12 in order to celebrate the churchs grand opening.
The carnival-like celebration, which will take place from 1 to 5 p.m., will feature a clown, bouncy houses, face painting, balloon art, games, outdoor activities, and foods such as hot dogs and popcorn. The hot dogs are among the donations from the Grosse Ile Kroger for the grand opening.
The churchs pastor, the Rev. Ken Brown, will offer tours of the building to interested visitors during the event.
Our hope is to offer them a beautiful day, filled with fun and opportunities for learning more about us, said Kim LaChappelle of Grosse Ile, who is a member of the church's outreach committee, as is her husband, Eugene.
The afternoon also will include a presentation by Carol Hendricks of the Trenton Historical Society of a time capsule that was found in the raptors of the building, which used to be the Taylor School.
The school building has been reconstructed to meet the needs of the church. The church members have been meeting in the building for about a year, but now the construction is almost complete.

CHESAPEAKE
Kendra Smith wasn't thrilled with her temporary home Wednesday.
Her apartment building was evacuated the night before because of a kitchen fire in one of the units, so the 55-year-old former accountant was staying at the Red Roof Inn on Woodlake Drive. She said it was difficult for her to walk upstairs to her second-floor room. She also lamented leaving some of her heart medication in her apartment and wished she'd grabbed her coffee maker.
But given Smith's former living arrangements, she wasn't complaining. The hotel was better than the Jeep Grand Cherokee she called home before moving into Heron's Landing last year.
"This ain't home, but at least it's got a roof," Smith said with a laugh Wednesday while chatting with friends outside the hotel.
Fifty-eight formerly homeless people - including veterans, unemployed construction workers and former police officers - were forced from their apartments Tuesday after a fire in the 2100 block of S. Military Hwy. All are expected to be able to return today, officials said.
Capt. Scott Saunders, a Fire Department spokesman, said the 10:15 p.m. blaze in a second-floor apartment triggered the building's sprinkler system. He said only one sprinkler head was activated, but water flooded parts of the first and second floors and forced the building's electricity to be turned off.
One resident suffered smoke inhalation but refused to be taken to the hospital, Saunders said. There were no other injuries.
Heron's Landing opened in March 2013. The 60-unit, $10 million project offers formerly homeless adults the chance to live in studio apartments. The building was funded by South Hampton Roads cities and is run by the nonprofit Virginia Supportive Housing.
