Demolition of Lichfield St Carpark supports retail sector

    - July 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Christchurch City Council has agreed to demolish the Lichfield Street Carpark building, ensuring the empty site can be turned into a temporary carpark in time for the pre-Christmas retail rush.

According to advice from Council engineers, which has been peer reviewed, the carpark building is severely earthquake-damaged and uneconomic to repair. Before demolition begins, the Council has agreed to make sure reinsurers can complete assessments of the building which are needed to finalise the Councils insurance claim.

Councillor Paul Lonsdale, who sat on the Council subcommittee that agreed to the demolition of the carpark building, says the Council recognised the urgent need for short-stay parking for Ballantynes and the Re:Start Mall, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas.

He says going ahead with the demolition of the carpark building now demonstrates the Councils continued support for the retail sector and the new Central City Retail Precinct. Discussions are continuing about options for the rebuild of the carpark building.

"The provision of carparking is absolutely essential for the Central City retail sector to thrive," Councillor Lonsdale says. "We need to make it as easy as possible for people to come into the city to shop and enjoy all it has to offer. In an ideal world, we would have finalised discussions with our insurers over the building before agreeing to demolish it. But without the luxury of time and recognising there is urgent need for carparking in the area, especially in the lead-up to Christmas, weve made a considered decision to press ahead."

Care will be taken to minimise disruption to traffic on Lichfield Street while demolition is underway. Any demolition work that needs to be undertaken from the road will take place first.

The decision to demolish the Lichfield Street Carpark building comes after the Council earlier this year reached agreement with Carter Group Ltd which will build a new 534-space carpark on the Crossing Carpark site and maintain it for 50 years as a public carpark.

The old Innerbelt Bridge is set for demolition July 12

    - July 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Hold on to your hats! The controlled explosive demolition of the steel skeleton of the 1959 Innerbelt Bridge will take place at first light on Saturday morning July 12.

Controlled demolition will drop five (5) of the nine (9) steel spans of the old bridge. The team has used a mixture of both traditional demolition along with the "controlled" or explosive demolition method. The bridge railings, lights, barriers and concrete driving surface were all removed using traditional methods. Specific spans over the river and railroads were also disassembled in a traditional manner. Concrete piers will be demolished this summer using traditional methods.

The plan protects the businesses that operate from the Flats as well as people living and working in the Tremont neighborhood.

Members of the public are invited to watch the event.Due to limited view-sheds, only a small public viewing area near the corner of East 14th Street and Broadway Avenue is available.

The area will be accessible beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12. Paid, public parking is available in downtown lots a short walk from the viewing area. Even better, ride with our friends at RTA! The #19 bus provides direct access to the site.

A 1,000 foot perimeter will be set around the blast zone and many local roadways including I-90, the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, Abbey Avenue and others will be closed during the event. For a map of anticipated closures and closures times, please log-on to http://www.Innerbelt.org.

ODOT is in the midst of replacing the 1959 bridge with two new structures one to carry traffic in each direction.

The pair have been named in honor of statesman George V. Voinovich. Replacement of the 1959 bridge is vital to the success of moving people in and out of downtown Cleveland now and in the future. It will enhance capacity, bolster our economy and ensure the safety of motorists.

The first of the pair is now open and temporarily carrying traffic in both directions until completion of the second new bridge in late 2016.

Tiny houses big with U.S. consumers who pursue economic freedom

    - July 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(July 9): Doug Immel recently completed his custom-built dream home, sparing no expense on details like cherry-wood floors, cathedral ceilings and stained-glass windows -- in just 164 square feet of living space including a loft.

The 57-year-old schoolteachers tiny house near Providence, Rhode Island, cost $28,000 -- a seventh of the median price of single-family residences in his state.

I wanted to have an edge against career vagaries, said Immel, a former real estate appraiser. A dwelling with minimal financial burden gives you a little attitude. He invests the money he would have spent on a mortgage and related costs in a mutual fund, halving his retirement horizon to 10 years and maybe even as soon as three. I am infinitely happier.

Dramatic downsizing is gaining interest among Americans, gauging by increased sales of plans and ready-made homes and growing audiences for websites related to the niche. A+E Networks Corp. will air, beginning today, Tiny House Nation a series on FYI that celebrates the exploding movement.

The pared-down lifestyle allows people to minimize expenses and gain economic freedom, said architect Jay Shafer in Cotati, California, who founded two micro building and design companies and is widely credited with popularizing the trend.

It shows people how little some need to be happy, and how simply they can live if they choose, said Shafer, 49, who shares a 500-square foot home with his wife and two young children.

    No Mortgage

Despite gains in the labor and housing markets, Americans choosing mini houses remain wary of tethering themselves to a mortgage.

People want a more modest lifestyle now, said Derek Diedricksen, who travels nationally to lead building workshops. Those who opt for super-small structures dont want to waste their time or be a slave to a house they dont fully use.

Defined as 500 or fewer square feet, tiny houses range from primitive 96-square-foot huts to award-winning displays of sustainable architecture with elegant streamlined design. While many are built on wheels to avoid regulations, mobility isnt the main draw.
