A woman tried to throw a shoe but was restrained by a court guard. Another rose to ask yet again what has been asked repeatedly during the trial - whether the crew would have done the same if it had been their children obeying orders and waiting in their cabins.

"You may have sneaked out and may live a little longer, but you will all die one day," a sign held by a father said.
Lawyers for the defence have argued that it was up to the coastguard to rescue the passengers because its rescuers would have had better equipment and training.
Lee Joon-seok (R), captain of the ferry Sewol, arrives at the Gwangju District Court in Gwangju City, South Jeolla Province, South Korea (EPA)
The prosecution claim came as an interim government report found that official negligence and corruption contributed to the April 16 sinking.
The South Korean government's audit and inspection board said that the regional port administration had granted the ferry's license despite the fact the vessel had been illegally converted and that proper safety checks had not been carried out by the state agency responsible.
The report also said the coast guard botched its rescue operations, missing a crucial window to help passengers, issuing confused orders and failing to maintain proper communication with the Sewol.
Eleven government officials have been referred to prosecutors on corruption charges and dozens more face possible legal action.
The disaster resulted in the death of 304 passengers, of which only 293 bodies have been recovered. The search for the remaining 11 has been called off with the approach of a powerful typhoon towards Japan.

Months after former Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested on corruption charges, the parking company he founded in Charlotte has lost about a third of the public lots it managed.
E-Z Parking ran 16 public lots in March, when Cannon was arrested, according to information on the companys website and an Observer review. That number has fallen to 11 as of July not including lots solely operated on Carolina Panthers game days.
Two contracts the company lost were for uptown parking decks with thousands of spaces. The primary contractor on those decks cited Cannons arrest in its decision to end its subcontracting arrangement with E-Z Parking.
Cannons company also lost the contract for three surface lots on Morehead Street.
The former mayor has resigned his position at E-Z Parking, co-founder and president Jeff Feemster said. Cannon remains a partial owner of the firm, state records indicate.
Last fall, Cannons business managed 25,000 spaces in Charlotte. The company now operates about 15,000, E-Z Parking general manager Jay Ferguson said.
In any time period youre going to gain business and lose business, Ferguson said. Weve proven that we have the tools to manage through those industry cycles.
Business could erode further in the coming months. At least one major uptown parking contract, for the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority lot on Caldwell Street, is being reviewed. The CRVA says the negotiations are not tied to the allegations against Cannon.
Carolinas HealthCare System, E-Z Parkings largest client, is also reviewing its parking deal. Spokesman Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday the review is part of the hospital systems normal process of reviewing long-term contracts. That contract involves about 12,000 spaces. The organization decided in January to re-bid the contract and is putting together a request for proposals.
E-Z Parkings lost contracts are part of the fallout from the nearly four-year federal investigation that led to Cannons arrest and a guilty plea on a federal corruption charge. The former mayor acknowledged accepting bribes in exchange for the promise of political influence. Cannon is awaiting a sentencing hearing later this year that could send him to prison for five years or more.

If you have mold taking over your home, you may be wondering if mold remediation is worthwhile or not. In some cases it may be necessary while in others it may not. There are many reasons that a homeowner may choose to hire a mold removal professional in such situations, but before you hire just anyone, there are certain things you may want to know.
Just because you have mold growing in your home doesnt always mean you need to dish out big bucks for black mold removal costs. In fact, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) suggests that if the mold growing in your home is less than 10 square feet, you can remove the fungus yourself. Of course anything over that and you should be looking up mold remediation companies in the phonebook.
But first, ask questions. Dont just hire someone because they sound professional or because it was the first name you ran across in the phonebook. Find out what steps they take to remove the mold, what chemicals they use and what fees they charge.
If theyre talking about testing for mold in your home and using bleach to remove the fungus, run away as fast as you can. Most companies do not test for toxic mold and they will not use chlorine bleach to get rid of the mold because its not approved.
What the company will do however is identify and eliminate the source of the problem. Sources often include leaky faucets, pikes or flooding. The company will then eradicate the mold using the steps necessary and products required to kill the fungus. The steps and products used will also depend on the size of the affected area.
In any case, the contractors doing the job will always wear some form of respirator, gloves and goggles for protection. In bigger jobs they may need to use special sheeting to block off uncontaminated areas of the home. And in extreme cases special equipment will be needed to make the home environmentally safe again.
Some equipment that may be used during clean up include a wet vacuum and a HEPA vacuum. A wet vacuum is generally needed when materials such as hardwood flooring and carpeting is wet. A HEPA vacuum is generally needed when the clean up is in its final stages and all water damage mold has been removed.
In some cases if the damage is extreme you may be asked to discard non-valuable items. Items may include books, non-important documents, ceiling and wall tiles, insulation, carpeting, hardwood flooring, vinyl, linoleum, paneling, furniture and window treatments.
In the event that you do need to hire a company that specializes in mold remediation, you should know that the cost for this type of project wont be cheap. However, you may be able to minimize those costs and possibly avoid them all together depending on how the mold damages began. Your insurance company may be willing to help foot the bill and in some cases, FEMA may be able to help as was such the case with the Kansas flooding that happened several years ago. It certainly never hurts to ask no matter what the situation may be.

The technicians then take swab samples to verify the presence of mold/mildew growth on the actual surface itself (such as sheetrock walls) and air samples from both inside and outside the property to do a baseline comparison to verify if mold conditions exist in elevated levels throughout the property.
In addition to the sampling, the technicians then use infrared cameras to evaluate the source of moisture intrusions and/or condensation behind the walls and/or ceilings to determine the source of mold growth. (In order to properly remove mold, it is necessary to correct any source of moisture intrusions).

My front porch is a public extension of my living room, where I engage the neighbors.
HERALD-LEADER Buy Photo
When I traveled the upper South for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution years ago, I noticed a lot of statues of Confederate soldiers on courthouse lawns. I always thought Willis H. Carrier would have been a better choice to memorialize.
After all, the inventor of air conditioning helped make the region comfortable and prosperous, turning the Sleepy South into the Sun Belt. But Carrier's invention had a drawback, too. Southerners started building houses without porches.
I have lived most of my life in houses built since 1950. One had a patio. Another had a breezeway between the house and garage. Another had a "decorative" front porch too narrow to be of any use.
A couple of my houses had decks. The large deck I built on the back of my 1950s Atlanta home was especially nice. But decks are inferior to porches. There is no roof, and deck railings are rarely as elegant as porch columns and balusters.
My current house was built in 1907. It has a long, wide front porch and a large screened-in back porch, both equipped with ceiling fans. For most of three seasons each year, these are my favorite places to sit and relax. And on cool weekends with low humidity like this past one, they can be little corners of heaven.
Front porches and back porches are very different places.
My front porch is a public extension of the living room. There is a spring-cushioned swing and two antique rocking chairs I bought cheap from people who thought, as my wife did when I brought them home, that they were worn out.
Both came with caned bottoms and seats that had seen better days. One was re-caned for me by a friend who is an excellent craftsman, in addition to being a retired physician and Air Force general. The other chair may be beyond hope, as the wooden frame looks as bad as the splintered seat and back. It is reserved for skinny visitors.
