Tin Sheds shows China's pioneering conservation work

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A new exhibition at the University of Sydney's Tin Sheds Gallery showcases the pioneering conservation and preservation work carried out by Tongji University in Shanghai, including several of China's World Heritage Sites, over the past decade.

Founded in 2003, the Historic Conservation Program at Tongji University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning has undertaken several projects for important World Heritage Sites. Among these are: the Sangzhutse Fortress in Shigatse, Tibet; Fujian Tulou (Fujian Earthen Structures) in Fujian Province; the Ancient City of Ping Yao in Shanxi Province; and the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan Province.

University of Sydney's Trevor Howells, senior lecturer and co-ordinator of the Heritage Conservation Program in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, said: "The scope of the Tongji's program is far-reaching, encompassing a wide range of urban and regional sites from individual buildings to important urban centres, historic gardens and cultural landscapes.

"The skilful balance of traditional and modern building techniques, conservation of materials, appropriate methods of structural repair, all supported by meticulous methods of documentation, recording and analysis, underpin their approach to the care and management of places of great cultural significance."

Through an engaging visual display and case studies of key architectural and urban conservation projects, Envisioning Historical Place from Tongji University traces the history and achievements of its Historic Conservation Program over the last ten years.

An exhibition highlight is the Sangzhutse Fortress project. Built in 1393, the hill-top fortress commonly called the 'Little Potala' underwent a rigorous preservation of its ruins with a sensitive reconstruction of areas destroyed over time, particularly its superstructure and terracing. In 2009, the Fortress was transformed into a museum. Today, it is considered a powerful cultural monument - a 'spiritual anchor' - for the Tibetan people.

Other remarkable Tongji projects include the restoration and renovation of the modern architecture in the Bund Historic District of Shanghai, notably the China Merchants Steam Navigation Building and the design of the Public Service Center. The revitalisation of vernacular architecture in Zhejiang Province such as Old Haimen Street in Taizhou and Lai's Settlement in Hangzhou are also featured.

Comprising three key parts, the exhibition includes exploration of the University's first-class laboratory studies, past and current conservation research, architectural and urban heritage, traditional Chinese and vernacular architecture, and a 'historical environment survey and record' done by the University and its students over the past 60 years.

Tongji University's conservation program has been recognised by several awards in both China and abroad. These include the Holcim Awards Gold Asia Pacific, The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation, and the National Outstanding Survey and Design Industry Awards.

Envisioning Historical Place opens tomorrow, 3 July, at Tin Sheds Gallery in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney.

Hundreds gather in Beverly Hills to mourn slain Israeli teens

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than a thousand people -- some Jewish, some not -- gathered in a Beverly Hills synagogue Tuesday night with several purposes: to mourn, to remember and to come together for strength.

The memorial was held at the Beth Jacob Congregation in honor of three Israeli teenagers who were kidnapped and killed while hitchhiking home from school last month. Their bodies were found in a West Bank field Monday, 18 days after the teens went missing, and they were buried the following day.

As we grieve, we must remember: We are people of light, people of hope, said Israeli Consul General David Siegel.

Behind Siegel, photographs of the victims -- 16-year-old Naftali Frenkel, 16-year-old Eyal Yifrah and 19-year-old Gil-Ad Shaer -- were both printed and projected on a screen. Three lighted candles, one for each victim, rested on a table.

Shaer's aunt, Leehy Shaer, lives in Los Angeles and spoke at the memorial.

"It wasn't supposed to be like this," she began, acknowledging the shock and grief she and her family are experiencing.

"When I found out it was true, the horror of the terrorists shook my entire body," she said.Israel has accused the Palestinian militant group Hamas of the killings and is seeking two of its activists who disappeared the same day as the three teens.

But Leehy Shaer also emphasized the strength of the Jewish people and their determination to fight against terrorism.

Terrorists "don't realize life is our strength, and we will not be broken," she said, the rest of her words drowned out by applause.

Each speaker emphasized how tragedy had brought people together, creating solidarity both among Jews and non-Jews.

Years ago, South Huron and Lambton Shores argued over sharing the existing Grand Bend Sewage Lagoon system. They gave up, and brought Bluewater into a plan to build a new sewage treatment plant for all three, with an estimated 4600 potential users. And, they contended that the existing sewage lagoon system was polluting.

Today, Bluewater, Dashwood, Zones 3 and 4 of Lambton Shores are all out; the number of actual users is only 1100; the existing lagoon system has over half of its design capacity still available for new users; and there is NO evidence, including recent confirmation from the Ministry of the Environment, of any pollution issue. In fact, the system is working well:

    1. No history of non-compliance for effluent discharge, the quality of which is well within all applicable criteria.

    2. No spills of untreated wastewater.

    3. No legislative need to upgrade, because the existing system does not receive storm sewer flows.

Regardless, the contract to build a new plant is about to be awarded by two Municipalities and up to $14.9 million of hard-earned money of Ontario and Canadian taxpayers has been approved to help build it. We know Bluewater will pay nothing now, maybe never. Its Council voted unanimously to opt out and doesnt have to opt back in. But, even at this 11th hour, neither Lambton Shores nor South Huron knows how they will pay for the new plant, nor if can they afford it. A small population of mostly cottagers and seniors on fixed incomes cannot afford to build an unnecessary plant, contribute to a life-cycle reserve ($470,000 a year), and pay operatingcosts which will increase 700% (from $51,000 to $360,000,a year).

We do need to replace or fix existing aged/malfunctioning infrastructure for which there is little to no money, and the Municipalities need to address their debt, as warned by the Province. South Hurons Treasurer cautioned Council that its high debt means there is little financial capacity for new projects, and money should be saved for unforeseen needs or emergencies. In fact, South Huron taxpayers are facing more than 50% tax increase just to make up for the deficits for existing infrastructure needs. Lambton Shores has similar issues.

The only potential new users listed for the first 20 years for a new plant are South Huron's private shoreline communities - about 170 cottagers stretched over 2.5 kilometres. The Environmental Assessment showed their septics are NOT causing any negative impact, and in fact the well-treed area (the last northerly tip of Carolinian forest, home to species at risk) is a natural protection absorbing nutrients, keeping the shoreline clean and swimmable. The cottagers voted against installing centralized sewage collection to protect the trees, committing to continued good stewardship of their septic systems, welcoming mandatory inspections. Connecting to a large sewage system invites the risk of a major spill, which would be devastating along the lake.

It has become clear that the main goal of the Municipalities is to cling to the upper tier government money. But there is only one taxpayer. We support Councils who take care of present responsibilities and don'tbuild anything until truly needed and able to fund. The pipes need fixing, not the plant. And a new plant won't fix the pipes.

East Morgan County Hospital addition progressing

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

People visited a new section of East Morgan County Hospital, which has the walls up now. The project is scheduled to finish in December. (Dan Barker/ Fort Morgan Times)

Patients at East Morgan County Hospital and their families will have much more space in their rooms after an addition is completed.

The new wing will add almost 50 percent to the size of EMCH with an extra 32,000 square feet and much of that space will go into patient rooms, said CEO Linda Thorpe during a tour of the most recent stage of the work.

"It's an exciting time for us," Thorpe said.

It has gotten to the "dry wall walk through" stage, when walls are up and people can get a sense of the layout of rooms, nursing stations and other aspects of the new facilities, she said. The public was invited to see the progress on the $20 million addition.

Banner Health chipped in $9.5 million for the project, and The EMCH District paid the rest. This project has been in planning for the past three to five years, Thorpe said.

The project adds 19 single-patient rooms, a brand-new kitchen and dining facility, and a new lobby and waiting area. Also, the hospital will gain more than 100 parking spaces, she said.

Patient rooms will have all the state-of-the-art technology for care, plus spacious bathrooms and closets to keep possessions. Each patient room will have an added 80 square feet of room, which offers more place for family and friends to visit. They will include couches for visitors to use.

Rooms will also have large windows to let the sunlight in.

The current facility has patient rooms built in 1967, and are much smaller, but as health care changes and adopts more technology, rooms need to be different today.
