Honolulu Zoo chimpanzee exhibit to be modified after escape

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Honolulu Zoos investigation on how a 15-year-old chimpanzee escaped his enclosure found that it was due to damage sustained to the chimpanzee exhibit wall.

Officials say a chip, about the size of a quarter, was big enough forPuiwa to climb up the wall.

At about 4:00 p.m. on June 25, 2014, Puiwa climbed the retaining wall of the chimpanzee exhibit and was just on the edge of an area where visitors were walking.

City officials say a visitor spotted the chimpanzee and alerted zoo staff.

The zoo was evacuated and the chimpanzee was subdued using a tranquilizer dart without incident or injury by 5 p.m.

Zoo officialssay Puiwa appears to be recovering well and all eight of the zoos chimpanzees have been living in their sleeping quarters while repairs are made.

Keepers will continue to monitor our eight chimps closely in their off-exhibit holding, said the zoos director, Jeff Wilkinson. The chimps have a day pen that is large enough for the eight chimps to socialize, exercise and play. A variety of items are available to entertain them until the exhibit is re-opened in late July.

Work to the exhibit is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete and will cost between $50,000-$100,000. Plans include replacing the current cement wall with a more weather-proof material.

Weve contracted Pacific Aquascapes to come in and repair what we believe is the reason he was able to escape, but we want to err on the side of safety, so were also going to include an overhang along the perimeter of the exhibit, Wilkinson said.

This Tree-Shaped Farm-On-A-Skyscraper Could Bring Acres Of Crops Into The City

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

So far, most existing vertical farms look like big greenhouses or plant factories--all of the action happens on the inside. Warehouses in Chicago, Kyoto, Singapore, and a handful of other cities grow plants with ultra-high-efficiency systems under artificial light, and a recent skyscraper in Sweden, built by the urban farming company Plantagon, raises greens near the windows on each floor. But a new design concept from Aprilli Design Studio takes a different approach, using lightweight decks to provide growing space outdoors on the sides of a giant skyscraper.

The architects aren't the first to embrace the trend of sticking greenery on towers, but they may be one of the first to look at how to use the technique to maximize food production. "Our version of the vertical farm was intended to become an independent, open-to-air structure which would be purely focusing on farming activities and sustainable functions such as generating renewable energy and performing air, and water filtration," say architects Steve Lee and See Yoon Park.

Designed to mimic the shape of an enormous tree, the Urban Skyfarm is covered in leaf-like decks that can provide 24 acres of space for growing fruit trees and plants like tomatoes. The "trunk" of the tree houses an indoor hydroponic farm for greens, and solar panels and wind turbines at the top of the tower provide enough energy to power the whole operation. The design would also capture rainwater and filter it through a constructed wetland before returning it to a nearby stream.

The architects envision the project in the middle of downtown Seoul, South Korea. "It seemed to be an ideal place to test out our prototype since the specific area is very dense and highly active and has been suffering for a long time by all sorts of environmental problems resulting from rapid urbanization," say Lee and Park.

"With the support of hydroponic farming technology, the space could efficiently host more than 5,000 fruit trees," the architects explain. "Vertical farming is more than an issue of economical feasibility, since it can provide more trees than average urban parks, helping resolve urban environmental issues such as air pollution, water run-off and heat island effects, and bringing back balance to the urban ecology."

The design would also provide community gardens, park space, and a farmers market to cater to a demand for fresh, local food in a city where apples can cost more than $20 at local markets.

Vertical farming has already started in South Korea. Another project, based in Suwon, is growing food in a three-story building and may eventually expand into a skyscraper. But the outdoor vertical farm is just a concept for now.

"We believe there will be more attention and discussions of vertical farms as the 2015 Milan Expo approaches, and we hope the Urban Skyfarm can become part of the discussion as a prototype proposal," say Lee and Park. "Vertical farming really is not only a great solution to future food shortage problems but a great strategy to address many environmental problems resulting from urbanization."

Fire officials warn of fireworks, outdoor grill dangers

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The July Fourth holiday period typically presents hazards of fire and burn injuries. The most common involve cooking grills, wooden decks, and use of fireworks or sparklers.

Ted Pisciotta, assistant Shelton chief for fire prevention, said everyone must seriously consider the tragic consequences that a sudden mishap involving fireworks or a hot sparkler could cause. Physical injuries can last a lifetime.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) points out that fireworks can have a life-altering impact on people, including severe eye injuries, loss of limbs, and even death.

In a recent report, CPSC estimated 8,700 consumers were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments for fireworks-related injuries last year. About 1,000 reported injuries involved sparklers and bottle rockets fireworks that are frequently and incorrectly considered safe for young children.

This is in addition to fires resulting in property damage that are ignited by fireworks.

During the holiday weekend, the Shelton Fire Prevention Bureau encourages everyone to remember:

Treat all fireworks as being suitable only for use by trained professionals. Attend public firework displays that are pre-arranged under controlled conditions. Stay back at least 500 feet from professional fireworks displays.

Avoid use of sparklers, which can reach 1,200 degrees, according to the National Fire Protection Association. That is more than five times hotter than it takes to boil water and certainly hot enough to burn skin or ignite a fire. Consider also that wood burns at 575 degrees and glass melts at 900 degrees.

4 sought for thefts from area Menards

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORT WAYNE At first glance, they looked like people simply remodeling a bathroom in need of new vanities.

Its what police say they loaded into those vanities that netted four northeast Indiana residents a slew of felony charges.

Inside the vanity boxes were expensive, high-end tools, including generators that were eventually sold to area pawn shops before the vanities were returned for refunds, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

As a result of the thefts from area Menards stores and sale of the merchandise to pawn shops, Troy S. Stauffer, 36, of Decatur; Chrystal R. Stauffer, 35, of Monroe; James J. Deleon, 54, of the 7500 block of Amber Road; and Alice G. Stovall, 59, of the 11300 block of Bethel Road, were charged with one count each of corrupt business influence.

According to the affidavit, the spree that occurred between March 7 and April 21 resulted in a loss to Menards of $12,569 and a loss to area pawn shops of $2,735.

The scheme involved taking bathroom vanities and filling them with tools or other merchandise in the stores before the buyer headed to the checkout line.

The buyer would pay for the vanity but would not tell the cashier there were other items in it, the affidavit said.

The vanity would then be returned for a refund, and the items that were stolen in it would get sold to area pawn shops.

Police were able to track down several of the stolen items that hadnt yet been resold, including a $600 generator that was one of the most common items repeatedly stolen, according to Menards.

In addition to the Fort Wayne locations, stores in Warsaw and Lima, Ohio, were also targeted in the scheme, the affidavit said.

    Sudan: Authorities demolish church

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sudanese authorities demolished the Church of Christ in Thiba Al Hamyida, North Khartoum on 30 June, after giving the churchs leaders 24 hours notice of the action. However, a mosque on the same plot of land was left standing.

After their Sunday service on 29 June was interrupted by the authorities, who announced the planned demolition, the churchs leader Rev Kwa Shamal appealed to the North Khartoum Commissioner, providing evidence that the Church of Christ was the legitimate owner of the land on which the church was built.

Morning Star news reported that Abdel Aziz Omer, office director for the commissioner, informed Rev Shamal that the government had intended to destroy the church since 2012 to make way for the construction of a hospital. However, the church building was destroyed while a mosque located on the same plot of land was allowed to stand.

Christians in Sudan have come under increasing pressure since the secession of South Sudan on 9 January 2011. In April 2013, the government announced that new church licences would no longer be issued. Since then the destruction of church buildings has continued unabated. Christians have also faced detention and interrogation by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), with several non-Sudanese Christians being deported at short notice.

Christian Solidarity Worldwides (CSWs) Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: It is deeply concerning that Christians in Sudan are experiencing increasing repression. The demolition of the Church of Christ, while a mosque in the same location was left untouched is not only a blatant act of discrimination, but also appears to be part of a strategy aimed at restricting the rights of religious minorities incrementally, and in violation of the Sudans own constitution, which recognises the nation as multicultural, multi ethnic, multi lingual and multi religious. CSW calls on the Sudanese authorities to return the land and rebuild the Church of Christ in Thiba Al Hamyida, or alternatively, to compensate the church and allocate an equally viable location for a new building. Sudan must also fully guarantee the right to freedom of religion or belief for all its citizens, as per the Interim constitution and article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Sudan is a signatory.
