Worcester is "alive with rats", says pest control firm owner

2:53pm Tuesday 1st July 2014 in News By Lydia Johnson, Fashion and beauty writer

THE city of Worcester is "alive with rats", a local pest control company has claimed.

And Cripplegate Park and the riverside near the Worcester Bridge are hotspots for the creatures, according to Nigel Probert, owner of Astwood Road-based Verminater Pest Control.

Shocked visitor Michael Gale, aged 65, of Rushwick said he spotted three running about in the park.

"I was shocked. When they saw me they scuttled under the hedge," he said.

"I found another lying dead near the tennis courts soon after.

"Children play in the park and people walk their dogs there. Rats can carry disease so who knows what would happen if a child or a pet were to get bitten."

But according to Mr Probert, Mr Gale is not the only person to voice concerns about the park.

Mr Probert, who set up his business in 1996, said: "Friends and neighbours always tell me about the rats there. I looked for myself and it is quite appalling.

Bid accepted on Ekin Center in New Albany despite debate over hiring local firm

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW ALBANY Following an hour of debate and a failed motion to accept a higher bid the New Albany Redevelopment Commission hired the Louisville firm Myers-White Inc. to restore the Ekin Avenue Recreation Center Monday.

Last week, the body failed to take action on a contract after commission member and New Albany City Councilman Dan Coffey pushed for the local contractor Upton Pry Inc. to be chosen for the job.

Upton Pry and Myers-White were the only contractors to bid on the project, but when taking into account the alternate options, the New Albany firms price was $26,000 more than Myers-White.

Still, Coffey said it would be worth it to hire Upton Pry because they employ local people and pay local taxes.

The commission consists of five members, and only three were present during last weeks meeting. With Coffey voicing his disagreement with selecting Myers-White, commission President Irving Joshua declined to entertain a motion to vote on the bids.

The entire commission was on hand for Mondays meeting.

The bulk of the base bid was for roof replacement and repair work, and Upton Prys proposal was $9,000 cheaper than Myers-Whites bid. But counting the alternate options which include exterior painting and masonry work Upton Prys bid was for $302,000.

Thats compared to the total bid of Myers-White, which was $276,000 and eventually accepted by the commission.

The biggest difference in the bids was for the painting, as Upton Prys proposal for the work was quite a bit higher than Myers-White, officials said.

It looks like we have apples and oranges, said commission member and Councilman John Gonder of the difference in the painting bids. A representative with the engineering firm hired for the project, Michell Timperman Ritz, said the painting price may have just been a mistake on the part of Upton Pry.

    Emma Watson in immigration fiasco

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The 24-year-old is being probed by UK immigration officials after claims that her American house keeper was allegedly working here illegally between September 2013 and February 2014.

The Daily Mail has reported that Watsons maid only held a tourist visa and did not have the correct documentation to work here legally for the length of time that she had been.

The investigation comes after the maid was stopped by UK border controls - on a flight from New York to London - who asked how she was funding such trips and how she intends to pay during her stay.

Watson employed the maid while living in New York, but found that her services were more effective than the wizarding worlds scouring charm, and she flew her to the UK on multiple occasions to clean her London abode.

If immigration officials find that the maid was working illegally, then the Perks of Being a Wallflower actress could face fines of up to 10,000.

Spring-Green Offers Mosquito Protection Just in Time for Summer

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plainfield, Ill (PRWEB) June 30, 2014

Summer is officially here, and that means hot weather and beautiful sunshine. And with the recent rains we have been receiving, its also the perfect environment for a mosquito population explosion. Luckily, Spring-Green Lawn Care offers a mosquito control service that will keep those pests away.

With more than 170 species of mosquitoes in the U.S., it can be hard to maintain a mosquito-free yard. And with all of the holidays in the summer, including Fourth of July and Labor Day, a fun evening can quickly turn into an unpleasant swatfest. Some methods of mosquito control, such as using bug sprays and lighting candles, may only last a few hours. Spring-Green's method, however, treats the plant life around the perimeter of a yard to create a long-lasting barrier helping to control mosquitoes and prevent their return for up to a month.

Mosquitoes are a fact of life, said Harold Enger, director of education. Spraying for them is a great way to reduce their populations so that you can enjoy your outdoor environment, even at dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquitoes need standing, still water to breed. Harold offers a few tips to help minimize mosquitoes: Look for spots where water collects like flower pot saucers, watering cans and even rain gutters. Empty the saucers when full and change the water in watering cans every other day.

Rick Hoover, franchise owner in Yorkville, Illinois, believes the mosquito control service is invaluable in any environment where mosquitoes can thrive.

No one should underestimate how harmful mosquitoes can be, Hoover said. This treatment does exactly what its supposed to do and thats keep the bugs away from your family.

Aside from the mosquito control service, Spring-Green also delivers traditional and organic lawn and tree care services nationwide. Its service is centered on the beautification of neighborhoods and communities. Spring-Green serves both residential and commercial customers.

Spring-Green Lawn Care has a history of listening to our customers, said CEO Ted Hofer. Offering mosquito control is just another example of our commitment to meeting our customers expectations for caring for their lawn and landscape.

Rains take toll on home service maintenance

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home service companies across SWFL told us they got a number of phone calls after last night's severe weather. It's a trend they see continuing as we enter the summer months. But just because the mercury is going up doesn't mean the cost of maintaining your home has to.

"Every time I tell people what I do, they go, "Oh! You're a pool boy! Oh! You're a cabana boy! But there's a lot more to job than just showing up with the chemicals and a smile," explains Nick Williams.

He and his dad run Performance Pool Service Inc. in Cape Coral. Williams services dozens of pools each day and says the summer months bring about a special set of challenges, especially with excess rainwater.

"You're adding fresh water to something that you already have chemicals in," explains Williams. "So it's going to ruin your chemistry."

Joe Mitchell with Pool Pros Inc. says that's also a big concern among his customers.

"We've already had a few phone calls that pools are a little cloudy."

Mitchell says running your pump more often can be a quick fix. His company maintains more than a thousand pools and says this is his busiest year yet.

The pool guys aren't the only ones seeing the mini boom. Franz Regner, owner of Tropiscape Landscape Services, says his business is up twenty percent over last year. He just got eight new customers last week alone.

The most common mistake he sees is people taking too much of their trees.

"Over trimming is not really good because just like anything else, if you trim it too far back, the root system doesn't have anything to sustain itself," says Regner.

ESB offers free tours of Turlough Hill hydro station

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Turlough Hill power plant will celebrate it's 40th birthday this year and is inviting guests to come and take a look. Video: Darragh Bambrick

The ESB has opened its Turlough Hill generating station to mark the 40th anniversary of its opening

The ESB has opened its Turlough Hill generating station to the public and is offering free tours throughout the summer to mark the 40th anniversary of the States first and only hydro- electric storage station.

Set high in the Wicklow mountains and almost invisible to prying eyes the station which can generate up to 292 MW of electricity in 70 seconds is located 500 metres inside the hill itself.

Some 300 metres above the turbines is the upper reservoir on the top of Turlough Hill, its flat top the only sign from the nearest public road of man made intrusion in the landscape. It is approached by a small winding road over rocky outcrops known as the Wicklow Gap, seeming populated only by sheep.

However, 300 metres off the road, like a scene from a James Bond film, the tunnel appears with workers going in and out of the mountain in small golf buggy-like vehicles.

The station operates all year round but comes into its own typically at about 5pm on a wet February evening when household cookers across the country are switched on, lights come on and home heating fires up. Turlough Hill can deliver its 292 MW of electricity to the national grid, ramping up to full power in just 70 seconds ensuring the States lights dont even flicker.

Turlough Hill can stay at full power for about five hours. It does this by opening sluice gates allowing up to 2.3 billion litres of water drop through the pipework inside the mountain hitting the turbines at a depth of 300 metres. The water then exits into a lower lake, originally a corrie, a geographical feature which ensures the facility remains almost invisible in the landscape.

Pendle Hill to benefit from 3m lottery funding

3:00pm Tuesday 1st July 2014 in News By Tyrone Marshall, Reporter

PENDLE Hill will benefit from 3million in lottery funding to attract more tourists if a bid for cash is successful.

The area was chosen by the committee for the Forest of Bowland AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) to be the subject of the bid for the lotterys Landscape Partnership Scheme.

Pendle Hill was chosen because it requires special attention to ensure conservation of the landscape character.

Mike Williams, tourism manager at Pendle Council, said: The Landscape Partnership outcomes seek to benefit people, heritage and communities.

One of the key drivers is to attract and involve new audiences to connect with special landscape, for example people from local towns and neighbouring urban areas who dont normally access the countryside.

Two key potential benefits of the bid are that local people in Pendles towns that do not currently benefit from their local countryside will be more attracted to do so, and the project would raise the profile of the area as a visitor destination. helping to support local businesses.

The committee will find out if stage one of the funding bid has been successful in October. If it is, they will have to submit a second bid in spring next year.

If the bid is successful, projects could include recruiting more volunteer rangers to patrol the area, improving access to the hill and surrounding areas, refurbishing Barley and Spring Wood cabins and educating visitors to respect the landscape.
