Restoration Hardware Upped to Strong Buy – Analyst Blog

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Jun 28, 2014, Zacks Investment Research upgraded Restoration Hardware Holdings, Inc. ( RH ) to a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

    Why the Upgrade?

Restoration Hardware has witnessed rising earnings estimates over the last 30 days following spectacular first quarter fiscal 2014 results. Moreover, this home furnishings retailer has delivered positive earnings surprises in the trailing four quarters with an average beat of 37.0%. The long-term expected earnings growth rate for this stock is 28.6%.

The company's earnings of 18 cents per share grew threefold year over year while comfortably beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 10 cents and exceeding the company's own guidance of 9-11 cents a share. The bottom line was driven by a robust 22% surge in the company's net revenues of $366.3 million. Net sales not only surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $346.0 million, but also came ahead of the company's predicted range of $345-$350 million.

Further, management seems highly impressed with the company's first-quarter performance despite eliminating the mailing of "Fall 2013" Source Book. The solid results coupled with its leading position in the home furnishings industry and multi-network business model make Restoration Hardware confident about its future prospects.

This was well reflected in the company's encouraging outlook for fiscal 2014. It now expects net revenues to range from $1.86-$1.89 billion, compared with $1.825-$1.86 billion predicted earlier. Moreover, it anticipates adjusted earnings per share to lie in the band of $2.24-$2.30, up from $2.14-$2.22 per share forecasted previously.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2014 and 2015 increased 7.7% and 2.5% to $2.38 and $2.85 per share, respectively.

Going forward, the company also plans to maintain its focus on transforming its retail outlets and expanding its product portfolio, with the latter taking a leading edge from its 2014 Source Books. In fiscal 2014, the company plans to introduce new Galleries in Greenwich, and Los Angeles.

The company believes that subsequent to its real estate transformation in North America, it will record annual sales of $4-$5 billion, generating operating margins in the mid-teens and producing adequate free cash flow.

On the trading front, shares of this retailer hit a 52-week high of $93.54 per share before closing a notch below at $92.37 per share on the last trading day. Also, stock price has gained 37.2% on the index year to date.

    Council kills proposed re-roofing permits

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

No Helotes resident will be required to apply for a permit when the roof starts leaking.

Helotes City Council unanimously voted Thursday against a measure that would establish a fee for re-roofing on existing residential and commercial structures.

Council member Cynthia Massey said she was vehemently opposed to the ordinance, which would have established permit requirements and fees charged by the city for the installation of roofing materials.

It's another form for the government to get money from citizens for no apparent reason, Massey said. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

City Manager Rick Schroder said that, even if the ordinance passed, enforcement would be a problem, especially if multiple houses were damaged during a hailstorm.

He questioned how quickly a city inspector could get to each battered structure.

Most re-roofing jobs are done because of hail damage, noted Mayor Thomas Schoolcraft. Insurance companies come out for the final inspection. That's why I didn't see a need for this.

In defense of the proposed ordinance, building official Bruce Bealor said the Bexar County Appraisal District raises the value of a house if paperwork concerning a re-roofing job is received by them a process that would happen if the city of Helotes charged a fee.

Other reasons he cited for requiring a permit included the assurance of a cleanup, a way to check that allowable materials be used and ensuring a minimum slope would be installed.

In other action, the council postponed indefinitely approving a lease agreement between the city of Helotes and the Bluff at Old Town Helotes LLC for the lease of a public restroom facility and associated real property located at 14391 Riggs Road.

Manitowoc Co. Prosecutor Set to Release Second Book on Avery Case

    - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Manitowoc County prosecutor is preparing to release a book about Steven Avery. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were convicted for the 2005 rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. It is one of the highest profile criminal cases in Northeast Wisconsin in the past decade.

The book titled "The Innocent Killer" connects Avery's wrongful 1985 rape conviction with the actions that led him to kill Halbach. And while the author says the book is for educational purposes, Halbach's family is disgusted it's even being published.

Michael Griesbach, a prosecutor with the Manitowoc County District Attorney's Office was the on-call DA the night searches found Teresa Halbach's SUV on the Avery salvage yard property in November of 2005. But because his county was being sued by Steven Avery for his 1985 rape conviction, for which he spent 18 years in prison, only to be exonerated, continuing to work on the case was a conflict of interest. So, like many others, Griesbach watched as an observer as the case unfolded.

Then, in 2010, Griesbach self published "Unreasonable Inferences" a book about Avery, his wrongful conviction and how it led him to commit the Halbach murder. A story that will be told again, with some additions, in "The Innocent Killer" the second book on Avery that Griesbach is having published by the American Bar Association, due out next month.

"It's a situation where, had he not been wrongfully convicted, he would have been somewhere else. He would have, perhaps there would have been other victims but this specific case would not have happened, but that's not the point of the book," says Michael Griesbach.

Griesbach says the book should be used as a teaching tool.

Adding, "The Avery wrongful conviction was an aberration, it's not the way police and prosecutors act. When it happens though, we have to look at it and we need to see what sort of lessons they hold for the criminal justice system."

That reasoning isn't sitting well with the family of Teresa Halbach who released a statement through her brother Mike Halbach saying in part, "Some individuals find it acceptable to use the death of my sister, Teresa, to promote themselves, to glorify murder and murderers, and to profit personally...Violence doesn't have to be made into entertainment, especially when additional undue harm is caused toward those who were victimized in the first place."

Griesbach disagrees, but says his one regret in writing the books is the fact he's upset the Halbach family.
