A national pest control company says it has seen an unusual spike in bedbug cases this year in Nova Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes, an increase they believe was partly due to bad winter weather.

When people stay home more than usual, the constant availability of blood meals speeds up the bugs reproduction, said Jim Newhook, Atlantic branch manager at Abell Pest Control.

It definitely contributed somewhat. They have to feed five times before they can breed.

However, a raft of other changes also play a role in bedbugs steady move into Atlantic Canada, said Newhook, who teaches a seminar on bedbugs in the tourism management program at Nova Scotia Community College.

This year, there were also more calls than usual from rural Nova Scotia, said Mike Heimbach, director of business development at Abell, which he said is the second-biggest pest control company in Canada.

Bedbugs took a little longer to reach the East Coast than the rest of the country, but now they are making their way from hotels and urban dwellings through the region, said Heimbach.

What we are seeing is bedbugs are spreading further and further away from major cities, he said.

They started where youd have them in Halifax theyre spreading out to more rural areas where people are travelling.

Overall, Abell has seen about 25 per cent more calls about bedbugs in the past year compared with the one previous, said Heimbach.

Throughout the rest of Canada, the average year-over-year increase in calls was 20 per cent, he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) America is going gaga over soccer. All of a sudden, were painting our faces and destroying workplace productivity so we can follow the mens national team at the World Cup.

So now that the USMNT (thats insider-lingo, apparently required of anyone who REALLY knows whats up) has reached the Round of 16 by losing to Germany, its time to start acting like Americans.

For starters, why do red-blooded Americans suddenly go all Euro when talking about the score of a soccer game? Two-nil? Please. Two-to-nothing is the way we talk here. Try going to AT&T Park and talking about the four-nil final score of Lincecums no-hitter. See how that works out for you.

The list seems endless. We already offend foreign ears by calling the game soccer (because we all know what football really is), so why do we feel compelled to call the surface on which its played a pitch? Its a field, same as it is when you play anything else on it.

And for crying out loud, when someone scores a tying goal, they tied the game up. Leveling is for building contractors.

If you insist on using un-American sports language, then why not go all-in? The Brits call a game a fixture. Here, we keep our fixtures in the bathroom or kitchen. They also refer to the standings (as in, Whos in first?) as the table. Here in this country, a soccer table is that game in the basement of the frat house.

I could go on, but by now, I hope you get the point. Its bad enough that the greatest country on Earth saw its citizens dancing in the streets after its national team lost its way into the next round of a soccer tournament. Must we surrender our sporting language, too?

PRESIDIO - A huge boost for tourism in West Texas are the starry skies in the Big Bend region. The City of Presidio is making moves to preserve their beauty.

The City of Presidio passed their Outdoor Lighting Ordinance with full support by the council. That makes them the final city in the Big Bend region to pass an ordinance dedicated to preserving their night skies.

When some wish to stargaze, they might have to drive to the country. For those in the Big Bend region, they can simply walk out the front door.

The City of Presidio passed an outdoor lighting ordinance to make that a possibility. For the past 25 years, the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis has urged the City of Presidio to act on passing an outdoor lighting ordinance. Mayor John Ferguson thought, why not right now?

"McDonald Observatory has a very important mission. The dark skies also are part of tourism in the Big Bend, so we want to make sure we're doing our part," John Ferguson, Mayor of the City of Presidio, said.

The observatory's Dark Skies Initiative promotes the awareness of "light pollution", which they define as, "Any adverse effect of artificial light, including sky glow, glare, light trespass, decreased visibility at night, energy waste, and more."

"As we're able to make these changes, not only is it going to darken our night skies, but it's also going to be a significant reduction in energy consumption," Ferguson said.

Even neighboring Ojinaga jumped on board the "go green" wagon by changing over to LED lights.

Some adjustments to outdoor lighting will be made.

For the fourth time in a week, a great white shark has been spotted in the New York-New Jersey area. The latest one was seen off the Rockaways. The Jhrnes family was fishing about 4 miles off shore when they reeled in the shark. Three generations of the family have stories to share this weekend: grandfather Bob, son Bobby and his kid Kai, 12, who reeled in the 80-pounder, a baby.

Djokovic says 'nothing damaged' after hard fall

LONDON (AP) - Novak Djokovic lay crumpled on Centre Court, clutching his upper left arm and grimacing. He felt something pop and feared the worst.

Djokovic had lunged for a shot behind the baseline, tumbled on the grass and rolled over twice, his racket flying from his hand. His new coach, Boris Becker, stood in the player's box and looked on gravely.

Slowly, Djokovic rose from the turf, still holding his arm across his chest and made his way to his chair.

"When I stood up, I felt that click or pop, whatever you call it," he said later. "I feared maybe it might be a dislocated shoulder or something like that."

It wasn't.

After a medical timeout and treatment from a trainer, the top-seeded Djokovic needed just four more games to complete a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over France's Gilles Simon on Friday, sending him into the fourth round and keeping alive his bid for a second Wimbledon title and seventh Grand Slam championship.

"Luckily there is nothing damaged," Djokovic said. "I just came from the doctor's office, ultrasound. It's all looking good. I'm quite confident that it will not affect my physical state or regimen or daily routine. I think it's going to be fine."

Djokovic will have two days off before an intriguing matchup Monday against another Frenchman, the free-swinging 14th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

"They told me usually in these kind of particular cases you might feel soreness in the next couple of days," Djokovic said. "But I can play around with practices and recovery and see how it goes. But I'm quite confident it's going to be all right for next one."
