Landfill
A Rumsey Environmental waste truck makes it's way down 12th Street toward the Eagle Bluff Landfill to dump a load of debris on Wednesday June 18, 2014. Advanced Disposal has proposed a volume increase for the landfill from 1000 yards of construction debris a day up to 3000 yards per day. The Eagle Landing landfill receives debris from the city's of Northport and Tuscaloosa, the Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation, and the Alabama Department of Transportation. The Tuscaloosa News | Erin Nelson
The owners of a construction and demolition landfill in Holt are seeking approval from the Tuscaloosa County Commission to triple the amount of debris that can be brought in each day.
Local residents aren't happy about the request. The only way in and out of the dump is a two-lane residential road 12th Street Northeast lined by small homes and trailers.
It's enough as it is, with trucks coming in and out too fast throughout the day, said resident Crystal Curry, while her young daughter played on a scooter in the yard.
Advanced Disposal, which owns the Eagle Bluff landfill, has requested a modification of its permit to increase the intake at the landfill from 1,000 yards of construction and demolition debris a day to 3,000 yards per day.
The reason for the request is the huge demand with all the demolition and construction projects going on in Tuscaloosa, said Mary O'Brien, chief marketing officer for Advanced Disposal. There are only two landfills specifically for construction debris in Tuscaloosa County.
Luckily for Alabama, the economy is coming back, and there is definitely a greater need for the services (we) provide, for the environmentally safe disposal of construction debris.
The landfill's customers include private companies as well as the city of Northport and the Tuscaloosa Environmental Services Department. The city of Tuscaloosa used to dump debris at the landfill only twice a week, but it now bring loads four times a week, O'Brien said. The dump does not take any kind garbage other than construction or demolition debris.
The economy is now stronger and the demand for our services has grown, O'Brien said.

Demolition workers this morning began taking down the Chardonnay house, a 125- year-old, Queen Anne-style landmark on Second Street Southwest that has been at the center of controversy over the city's commitment to heritage preservation.
Historic preservationists have attempted to save the house at 723 Second Street S.W., just west of the Gift of Life Transplant House, but the owner, Curtis Schuster, said the house was in poor condition, and he planned to raze it to make way for new development.

During the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Northwest Indianas 31st Annual Parade of Homes this week, you can explore new construction homes at your leisure. Admission is free for the scattered site eventwith 37 homes in Lake and Porter counties open 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on the weekends and 4 - 7 p.m. during the week through next Sunday, June 29.
Showcasing a variety of the finest new housing opportunities available across our region, the Parade of Homes is a great opportunity to get some new ideas - whether a new home is in your future this year while prices remain competitive and interest rates are low or you simply want a bit of inspiration for a few updates to improve your current home for now and for later when it does come time to sell.
Who knows, when you discover all the very tangible benefits of building new, you may opt to take the plunge sooner rather than laterand its definitely the best time of the year to get started.
Along with being able to see the many design advantages of the latest floor plans first hand, be sure to ask the builders and their representatives to point out the state-of-the-art materials and technologies that contribute to a lower cost of home ownership as you tour different homes during the Parade.
For example, new homes typically include significantly more storage and livable space than existing homes. According to New Home Source, new homes offer three times the closet space and two times the bathroom space when compared to most existing homes. Its not hard to imaging how that could improve the quality of life for an average family!
Then, in their effort to meet and often exceed the latest building codes, local builders are using the most advanced materials available many of which are designed to significantly reduce maintenance and utility costs for homeowners. They also typically provide comprehensive home warranties that give buyers peace of mind to go along with the fact that everything is brand new inside and out.
When you consider the repair and remodeling costs that often go along with moving into an existing home, these are just a few of the key advantages of new construction. Find out how a local builder can create your personal vision of a dream home so you can avoid the time and money associated with reshaping someone elses.
Visit the latest homes by the following builders to learn more, and be sure to enter the Walk In & Win drawing for a Toshiba 50-inch 1080p LED HDTV. Pick up an entry form at the first Parade home you visit and have it stamped. Tour 8 of the 37 homes and request stamps along the way to complete your form, which can then be left in an official drawing box at any home. All entries will be combined, with one winner selected and notified by e-mail following the drawing on June 30.

LAWRENCE Habitat for Humanity has been responsible for building more than 40 homes in the lower Tower Hill neighborhood of Lawrence, but its latest project on Acton Street is unique. Last Sunday, it was a vacant lot. This Saturday, it will be the site of two brand new homes.
Habitat for Humanitys Home Builders Blitz is a national event that will produce more than 300 homes across the country in just five days. Husband and wife Susan and Steve Howell, both of whom are on the board of directors of Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity, led a Blitz in 2012 on Market Street. The pair owns Howell Custom Building Group in Lawrence, and Steve Howell heads the team of lead builders for this project.
The lesson he has learned twice over is simple.
You cant plan enough. You have your primary plans, and then contingency plans, and then you need a back-up for those plans, he said.
When theres a whole building to finish in five days, every step in the construction process is scheduled down to 30 minute increments. Some nights, build crews will work until midnight. About 250 construction professionals have donated their time to the project, along with 125 other volunteers who provide support services like working the food tent and help with smaller construction tasks. Local businesses that have pitched in include Cote & Foster, Steeplechase Builders and McLennan Century 21, all in Methuen, and Marketing Matters LLC in North Andover.
The new building, designed by local architect Andrew Steingiser, contains two townhouses. Each is a three-bedroom home with its own entrance, so that both families can enjoy their own space.
Steve Howell said he and his wife treat the time they spend working on the Habitat house like a vacation week, but rather than taking a trip down to the Cape like some people might, they spend it working to better the community.

WASHTENAW COUNTY The Parade of Homes, an opportunity to tour a diverse range of newly built houses throughout Washtenaw County, will be held from Friday to Sunday.
The event is conducted by the Builders & Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor (BRAG).
Among the locations in the tour are a house in Chelsea, three in Dexter, one in Saline, and one in Ypsilanti, with the majority in Ann Arbor. Several houses are also in Livingston County. A list of the houses, their locations and details about each are available on BRAG's website.
Pete Nowakowski, marketing and communications director for BRAG, said the Parade of Homes is not only for those looking to have their own custom or model house built.
Anyone is welcome to participate, he said, including residents who want to see the different features of the new houses or see the decorations, as well as home improvement experts and architecture aficionados.
Among the featured houses are a 7,500 square-foot luxury house, a modern artistic custom retreat, and the latest house built by the Ann Arbor student builders, he said.
It's a chance to see a range of different styled houses with some of the latest new technology and features, Nowakowski said, such as a motorized porch screen. He said by looking around, residents may also find something they would like to have done in their current home.
"It's just really cool to see some of that stuff," he said.
Click here for a link to interactive interactive map of Parade of Homes' locations. An interactive map for directions to Parade of Homes houses in Washtenaw County is also available.
The parade also helps familiarize area residents with some of the local neighborhoods and gives the house builders some of the recognition they deserve, Nowakowski said. Continued...

BAR HARBOR The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Mount Desert Island Hospital and Healthy Acadia are hosting an educational program on human trafficking on Monday, June 23.
The session will present information to business owners and community members who wish to learn about the issue of human trafficking close to home. This event will be offered twice at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Conference Center. The first session will run from 10 a.m.-noon, and the second will run that evening from 5-7 p.m. The program is free to attend and open to the public.
Every day, local businesses and other people encounter human trafficking victims without realizing their situation, organizers note.
Vicki Eaton, an emergency department nurse and sexual forensic examiner from MDI Hospital, has been a passionate force behind this event from the beginning.
Eaton helped initiate the program in the hopes of spreading awareness. My goal for this class is to give the public a greater understanding of what human trafficking is, where it's occurring, the signs to watch for and who it affects, she said.
Our business owners and employees may encounter victims without recognizing the situation, said Jennifer Wright of the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.
In recent years, calls to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline from Maine have increased more than fifty percent.

Rectorseal Corporation 2601 Spenwick Dr. Houston, TX, 77055 USA Press release date: June 6, 2014
RectorSeal Corp., Houston, the exclusive U.S. distributor for Aspen Pumps, introduces the installation time-saving 'Plug-and-Play' feature for Aspen's Mini Aqua and Silent+ Mini Aqua, the world's slimmest condensate pumps for ductless mini-split air conditioners.
Plug-and-Play enables quick pump installation or replacement, because power and communication cables are connected via easily attachable/detachable slide-together pre-wired plugs. The Mini-Aqua Series' IEC Class ii appliance classification eliminates the need of a ground wire and makes the Plug-and-Play a quick connection or release.
The Mini Aqua and the Silent+ Mini Aqua are designed to quietly and efficiently remove condensate from the evaporator drain pan on ductless mini split and other air conditioning applications. Their 1.1 (h) x 6.4 (l) x 1.1-inch (d) (28 x 165 x 28-mm) ultra slim design allows for aesthetic, flexible concealment inside mini-split evaporator housings or within wall-mounted lineset protection duct.
The Silent+ is one of the industry's quietest pumps with a 19.5-decibel rating and a design featuring an anti-vibration bracket, an acoustic dampener and a proprietary sound-attenuating high performance motor.
