June 21, 2014 - International League (IL) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Moosic, Pa. -A slew of sparkling new additions to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' (Triple-A/New York Yankees) roster helped anchor a combined six-hit 4-0 shutout win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) Saturday night at PNC Field. 40-man member Bryan Mitchell received his first Triple-A start, dancing around four scoreless frames while fellow newby Taylor Dugas notched his first hit as a RailRider en route to a two RBI night at the plate.
Matt Barns tossed a 1-2-3 first before running into a bugaboo of trouble in the second. Three hits by Scott Sizemore, Zelous Wheeler and Rob Refsnyder loaded the bases before Barns issued a walk to Corban Joseph to bring about the game's first run. The crooked number was hung after Dugas' first RBI, a groundball to second, that made the affair 2-0 in favor of the local nine.
A four-hit fourth marked the final offensive charge for SWB as Dugas and Jose Pirela collected back-to-back run-scoring hits that thrust the advantage to the contest's final ledger of 4-0. Mitchell yielded three hits before handing the baton to Francisco Rondon (1-0) who twirled a sparkling 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball in the win. Matt Daley and Robert Coello piggybacked off Rondon to secure the final score of 4-0 and snap the RailRiders' three-game losing streak.
The RailRiders will look to build off Saturday night's win as they continue the series with the Pawtucket Red Sox Sunday, June 22 with day baseball at 1:05 p.m. The RailRiders will toss the right-hander Shane Greene (4-2, 5.77) while the Red Sox call upon the right-hander Allen Webster (3-4, 2.94). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 12:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio -The GAME, Northeast PA's largest radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM. For season ticket information, single-game tickets or to book a ballpark group outing, call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailirders.com. OFF THE RAILS:
Saturday's night win snapped a three-game losing for the RailRiders while aslo avoiding dropping SWB to a season-worst six-games under .500.
Mookie Betts swiped second base in the second frame off SWB catcher John Ryan Murphy. The RailRiders have allowed their opponents to successfully swipe a bag in each of their last 15 attempts. The RailRiders have nabbed just 21 of 100 (.210) would-be base stealers this season. No other IL team has had more stolen base attempts or successes against it than SWB.
Rob Refsnyder collected three more base hits Saturday night to raise his season-long contact clip with SWB to .293. Refsnyder has now collected a hit six of his last seven games, including three multi-hit affairs. During the run of success the RailRiders' usual second baseman is 10-for-25 (.400).
Saturday night's combined shutout of Pawtucket marked the RailRiders' fifth shutout victory of the season, with the last such win a 2-0 triumph over the Rochester Red Wings May 24. SWB is now 5-5 in shutouts this campaign.

Oak Place home damaged last year after home run ball flew over protective netting.
Waldwick Its not the whole enchilada, but its something.
On April 8, the Board of Education offered a resident $295 to repair a window broken by a baseball after wrangling over the cost for a year. The resident, Michele Dorn, 1 Oak Place, said the damages are closer to $800.
Dorn is no stranger to balls flying through her windows, but she knows its part of living just feet from the warning track of Waldwick High Schools baseball field.
Dorn, frustrated that her recent claim with the Board of Educations insurance company is in the appeal process and making no progress, appeared before the board on March 24 asking for assistance.
The baseball crashed through her window on April 29, 2013.
"So many balls come into my back yard that I cant allow my children to play outside when theres a game," she said.
With netting that extends to the height of her home, the board asked how the ball got to her window.
"The netting is sagging and falling down," she said. "Ive suffered damages from flying balls at least a half a dozen times in the past, but the board has always just paid."

Most people dont associate industrial plants with a clean working environment that is temperature controlled for worker comfort. But that is exactly what Siegel-Roberts wanted for their new plastic injection parts and plating plant in Farmington, Missouri.
The 180,000 sq. ft. plant had been a bicycle manufacturing facility with poor lighting, inadequate heating, no cooling, and a dusty and dirty environment for the workers. The new owners completely gutted the plant, removing all the old lighting, heating, and exhaust systems. The entire structure was cleaned, sealed, and painted, and new high intensity lighting was installed; the work made the plant look bright, clean, and brand new.
The Air Masters team was called in to design and install a modern heating, cooling, and ventilating system for the plant. After a review of the needs, they proposed a two-step approach to the problem. Heating was provided by installing modern gas-fired unit heaters at the perimeter of the building, while cooling and ventilation was provided by installing a series of six air handling units and two 250-ton air-cooled chillers.
Working closely with the plant manager and his staff, the air handling units were located so they would provide cooling right where the people worked. Outside, air ducts at each air handler provide outside air to meet ventilation requirements and to pressurize the plant, thus reducing costly air infiltration. In addition, the plant can go to 100% outside air to provide free cooling when outside temperature conditions permit.
Cold water from the chillers was piped to the air handlers in a primary/secondary piping scheme, allowing the plant manager to precisely control the cooling capacity. All told, over 1/3 mile of pipe was installed to monitor and regulate the temperature conditions in the plant. Now, with the touch of a computer key, the plant manager can turn his heating and cooling systems on and off, monitor temperatures, and adjust settings to keep his workers happy and productive.

Those utilities include fiber-optic lines, electrical lines and heating and cooling lines that are proposed to be buried there in the coming months.
The university has existing utility lines beneath the Edgar right of way, but the intersection of Edgar and Garden must be widened to accommodate new development on the campus. That road widening may require the university to relocate its lines.
The university and Ameren Missouri are installing a new electrical substation to provide additional electrical power to the university and other parts of the city adjacent to the campus. That will also require relocation of certain utility lines.
As far as the agreement with the city, Greg Gunderson, the university's vice president and chief financial officer, said he protested an annual right of way management fee that would total $1.90 per linear foot of buried conduit annually, with the university likely to install 1,000 to 2,000 linear feet.
He said the fee "caught us off guard."
"Ameren asked us to build an electrical substation due to limited capacity, and its construction will help the Webster Groves community to alleviate pressures on the electrical grid," he said.
"We don't object to paying the city as we bury the cable, to compensate residents for the inconvenience of installation. But this will be an annual charge, assessed long after construction is over, after the disruption has disappeared."
He unsuccessfully asked that the city instead assess a one-time permit fee of $116 per 300 linear feet of cable, as St. Louis County does.
City Attorney Helmut Starr insisted that the university was told by Ameren that it couldn't go ahead with construction of its planned new academic building without installing that new substation, because a current substation is at capacity.
