Demolition of illegal Campa Cola flats in Mumbai to be filmed

The demolition of illegal flats in Campa Cola compound beginning June 20 will be filmed and used as proof against the residents if they offer resistance, the city's municipal body said on Tuesday.

"We will be video-recording the entire demolition process, which we will carry out from June 20, so that it can be used as proof against residents in the Supreme Court if they stop us from performing our duties," Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner, told PTI.

At the first stage of eviction, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will cut off electricity, water and gas supplies to the illegally built flats. Internal walls of the flats would be pulled down in the second phase before finally demolishing the balconies.

Adtani said the demolition process was slated to start today but was deferred on humanitarian grounds following the death of two residents."We had planned to start the demolition drive from June 17, but we have now given the residents three more days to vacate the flats after the death of two residents. We will now start the demolition from June 20," he said.

The families of the deceased residents would be given extra time so that they can complete the last rituals, he said.

Campa Cola's first resident, Vinod Kothari (82), died on June 15 after a heart attack while 83-year old Chakravarti Chawla, a refugee from Pakistan, who had been hospitalised after suffering from kidney failure, expired on June 8.

Meanwhile, residents of Campa Cola said MCGM should extend their 'humanitarian gesture' to other residents as well."It is heartening to know that the MCGM has some humanity left in them. We sincerely hope that this humanitarian gesture gets extended to other residents as well.We, as citizens, expect the MCGM to take a humane approach to this issue," Ankit Garg, a resident said.

Seven buildings of Campa Cola Housing Society in south Mumbai were constructed between 1981 and 1989. The builders had permission for only six floors, but one of the buildings 'Midtown', has 20 floors and another 'Orchid' 17.As many as 102 illegal flats in the seven buildings in the compound are to be razed.

HILL COUNTY (CBS 11 NEWS) A demolition crew continues to clean up charred debris at Lake Whitney. There isnt much left of the 4,000 square foot luxury home that once dangled over the lake. Though the rubble will soon be gone theres more work that needs to be done.

Getting it to where we have clean slab and if something happens with the concrete its not a big deal because we dont have any trash on it, explained Stephen Reveille with Heart of Texas Demolition.

Workers with Heart of Texas Demolition worry the rest of the cliff could end up in the lake soon.

I think this slab has something to do with holding it together and not allowing it to just fall off, but its not going to stay up there much longer, Reveile said.

A controlled fire was started at the house on Friday. Officials believed that was the safest way to deal with the demolition.

The house had been teetering on the edge of the cliff because the soft rock beneath it had started to crumble.

Demolition of old Church & Morse building in Meriden stalled

MERIDEN The demolition of the former Church and Morse building and the adjacent structures has been at a standstill for more than a month and it could be some time before the buildings begin coming down.

The buildings at 33 and 51-53 S. Colony St. are being razed to simplify the reconstruction of a nearby railroad bridge. For more than a century, the bridge has contributed to downtown flooding, causing Harbor Brook to back up during major rainstorms.

The city held a ceremony in October 2013 to mark the start of demolition but, since then, different elements of the project including environmental cleanup, the removal of contents from the buildings, and the need for approvals from Amtrak and utility companies have taken longer than expected. City officials said they were unaware of whatever issue was holding up the project during the last several weeks. Public Works Director Robert Bass said an issue came up with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, but the city was not informed of the details as of early this week. Wednesday, however, city officials finally got some communication.

We are looking at it and digesting it to figure out what theyre looking for, Bass said. We want to move it off of our plate as quickly as we can.

Bass said the engineering department will have to investigate the questions and concerns, but for now we dont know how to answer them so we will have to research and come up with answers.

A DEEP spokesman said Tuesday afternoon he could not find anyone at the department that is aware of any issue. The spokesman, Dwayne Gardner, was not available for comment Wednesday. Another DEEP spokesman did not return a request for comment, Wednesday.

City Purchasing Officer Wilma Petro said she believed some of the questions had to do with the fill being used on the site once the demolition was completed. She said that it doesnt seem like anything major, and hoped demolition could proceed soon. Petro added that the demolition was only supposed to take a few weeks initially. Bass noted that the concerns have nothing to do with Harbor Brook, which flows beneath the Church and Morse building.

Massachusetts-based contractor NASDI is overseeing the project. Clearing out the buildings began late last year and contamination abatement occurred throughout the winter months. After a brief layoff, panels from the exterior of the former Church and Morse building were stripped, revealing old windows around the building. According to Bass, the panels contained very minimal amounts of contaminated material. Since their removal in April, however, there has been little action at the site.
