Handybook hopes to provide users with a way to hire cleaners or a handyman with the push of a button on their mobile phones. The company today is announcing it has raised a $30 million round of funding from Revolution Growth to support its expansion in new markets.
One of a growing number of startups offering the ability to book services online or through mobile apps, Handybook connects its users with professionals who can perform a variety of duties around the home. That starts with cleaning, but also extends to light plumbing and electrical work.
Over the past few months, Handybook has been adding services in a number of new cities. In April, the company expanded to a dozen new marketsand now operates in 28 markets across the U.S. Business has grown by 10 percent week over week, Hanrahan said, and the companys transaction value is 6.5-7x what it was at the beginning of the year.
According to co-founder and CEO Oisin Hanrahan, many of those new markets are growing much more quickly than its earlier launch areas did. Much of that is due to lack of competition and existing home services infrastructure in those cities. In many places, offering the ability to book cleaning or a handyman is still pretty new.
At the same time its expanded across the country, the company has also been increasing its headcount to support its growth. Handybook has grown from about 40 people at the beginning of the year to 120 today, Hanrahan told me.
The new money comes from Revolution Growth, the venture fund founded by Steve Case, Donn Davis, and Ted Leonsis. The round is on top of $12 million in funding that Handybook had raised from General Catalyst, Highland Capital, David Tisch, and Bullhorn CEO Art Papas, among others.
According to Hanrahan, Handybook decided to go with Revolution due to the experience that Case and Davis had with expanding local services businesses.
For us, it was about working with people who had an understanding of how local works, Hanrahan said. The guys just got it and understood how important it was to be hyperlocal.
For Handybook, winning local means getting the most supply of service pros in a given area. The company wants to get to a place where it has 100 percent availability within a three-hour window of someone opening the app, Hanrahan told me.
Of course, Handybook isnt alone in the home services market. Last December, Homejoy raised $38 million and has also grown rapidly since then. And there are rumors that Amazon is looking to go after the local services market.

DIXON As work on the downtown streetscape continues, more road closures are expected for this week.
According to information from the engineering firms:
On the east side of the project, work on the retaining wall on Ottawa Avenue will continue, in addition to storm and water service installation in various areas of the project.
On Tuesday, the south side of First Street, from Galena to Crawford avenues, will be closed for sawcutting.
Also on First Street, sidewalk installation will begin between Galena and Hennepin avenues.
On the west side of the project, work will continue on South Peoria Avenue, between First and Third streets, including curb and gutter installation between Second and Third streets.
On Peoria Avenue, between First and Second streets, work is expected to include the removal of roadway pavement and portions of sidewalks to install water mains, which will require the east side of the street to be closed.

Q Please tell me that the new lane striping on Highway 101 between Highway 85 and the Embarcadero/Oregon exit is temporary. The width of the left shoulder is large and the right shoulder is narrow and includes concrete slabs every couple of hundred feet that stick up about an inch and a half. ... Please, please, please tell me that crews made an error striping the lanes between San Antonio and Oregon onto 101. There is no on and off lane between these interchanges and the left side is two lanes wide!
Bob Greene, Chinchu Sup and James Richardson
A Relax, this is not permanent. Caltrans installed temporary markers after a paving job. The final striping will have an auxiliary lane between interchanges and should be in place by Aug. 1.
Q What the heck is going on with Highway 9 between Saratoga and Skyline Boulevard? We're down to one lane in a couple of places.
Karen Armstrong
A There is a lot of work planned for Highway 9, from the mountains above Saratoga into Los Gatos. Caltrans is upgrading the road to improve sight distance, adding a metal guardrail and warning signs, and widening shoulders and existing lanes to 12 feet.
The first area of work has about 1,000 feet of K-rail, with one-way traffic control south of Skyline. Bicyclists can slide in behind vehicles and ride through the single lane or they can hit the manual button that will allow them to pass through safely and before the light changes on the other side. The second location will have K-rail installed toward the end of this month to Saratoga and the winery. Work will take two years.
Now into Los Gatos.
Q Starting this week, Los Gatos will have a project on Highway 9 at University Avenue in full swing. This will lead to delays. It includes new traffic signal installation, paving, replacing the sidewalk and curb and gutter, and installation of new ramps.
