Distinctive Design / Build / Remodel is one of 70 remodeling companies from across the United States named a winner at the 2014 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure. This was the first year they have entered the awards, and to take home top honors on the first attempt is impressive, says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.

Distinctive Design / Build / Remodel won a regional award for best kitchen in the $100K+ category. Anything but ordinary thats what this kitchen remodel is all about. From the clean, simple lines of the cabinetry to the dramatic corbel ceiling, this kitchen went from standard to outstanding. Guided by the design and construction experts at Distinctive Design / Build / Remodel, the kitchen was transformed into a high-style yet hard-working space for homeowners who love to cook and entertain.

The homeowners often prepare meals for their large, extended family. But their original kitchen was disjointed and didnt reflect their sense of style. They spent two years dreaming about the remodel and countless hours clipping magazines, researching products and interviewing builders before selecting Distinctive Design / Build / Remodel for the remodel.

All aspects of the remodel required careful consideration and coordination. The inset cabinet doors with a subtle beaded face frame are painted a soothing celadon color. There are only a few upper cabinets which is a break from tradition. One large cupboard with a custom sleeve made out of knotty alder sits on the Giallitta "leathered" granite countertop. A recessed cabinet makes good use of an existing void in the wall and is the perfect place to store a blender and other small appliances. Even the cabinetry framing the massive refrigerator and freezer is minimal.

Because there are so few wall cabinets cluttering the scene, your eye is drawn up to hand-crafted faux beams which are stained to match the knotty alder. A metal vent hood hand forged by an artisan blacksmith provides a counter-balance to the refrigerator and freezer and introduces another organic material to the mix.

One of the most striking features of this kitchen is the corbel ceiling which extends over the gently curved seating bar. The corbel is coated with several layers of Venetian plaster which is a mixture of aged lime, marble dust and pigment. It is polished by hand, looks like antique stone, and is luxurious to the touch.

It takes a specialized team of designers and builders to bring a kitchen like this to life, says Erin Dougherty, Design Coordinator of Distinctive Design / Build / Remodel. Manhattan is poised to add the most office space in any three-year period since 1990 as projects including buildings at Hudson Yards and the World Trade Center site are completed, the New York Building Congress said.

The borough, home to the largest U.S. office market, probably will add 9 million square feet (836,000 square meters) of office space at nine development sites from last year through 2015, according to the organization, which promotes construction in the New York City area. An additional 10 million square feet at six buildings is likely to become available from 2016 through 2018, the group said in a statement today.

Its a vote of confidence in the market, which we think is long overdue, Richard T. Anderson, president of the New York Building Congress, said in a telephone interview. As a global center of finance and office-related functions, the city needs to regenerate its office space.

Office-using jobs in New York City last year surpassed the 1.8 million mark for the first time, an increase in demand thats helping support the construction boom, the group said. The estimates through 2018 include planned towers at 2 and 3 World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, where office leasing has exceeded the five-year average in each of the past 12 quarters, real estate brokerage CBRE Group Inc. (CBG) said in an April report.

A total of 24.4 million square feet of new office space is expected to be built from 2010 through 2019, more than the 19.4 million square feet added from 2000 through 2009 and the 10.7 million square feet delivered in the 1990s, the Building Congress said. This decades total will be about half of the 49 million square feet completed in the 1980s, the group said.

Filling the added office space may be a challenge, with slowing job growth in office-related industries including finance, insurance and law, Anderson said. Also, the amount of space occupied by each Manhattan office worker is dropping to about 200 square feet per worker in newly built and renovated buildings from 250 square feet, a sign of cost-cutting by employers, according to the Building Congress.

Renovation remains the dominant source of office construction, making up 70 percent of development spending, the group said.

Lower Mahattans 3 World Trade Center is stalled at eight stories while government officials and developer Larry Silverstein work on a plan to finance the 80-story tower. He is seeking an anchor tenant to justify the construction of 2 World Trade Center.

The mayor of Englewood Cliffs said Tuesday he would push for more-restrictive height limits on future development along the Palisades but only if a compromise can be found to end the bitter, protracted dispute over plans by LG Electronics USA to build a 143-foot-tall office building that, critics say, will loom over the historic cliffs.

The pitch by Mayor Joseph Parisi Jr., which included a call for LGs opponents to try to reach a middle ground with the company so the project can go forward, was characterized by one leading environmentalist as the first real positive step to finding a solution.

Im urging all the parties with different views to come to the table and compromise, Parisi said at a press conference Tuesday morning, singling out the projects opponents in his call for the two sides to hash out an agreement over the proposed construction, which Parisi said would provide significant economic benefits for the entire state.

Time is of the essence, Parisi said. I fear if a fair compromise is not reached, LG will leave the state.

Parisi who made his statement just feet from where LG has planned to build its new North American headquarters at 111 Sylvan Ave. was joined by LGs legal counsel, Nicholas Sekas, and by Councilman Ed Aversa, who has expressed concern over the height of the building. Parisi said he decided to go public with his plea after LG officials indicated they were willing to talk with the other side the result, he said, of some prodding on his part.

Some Wiggins residents are concerned that the new sod at the baseball field is turning brown.

During the meeting of the Wiggins Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Wiggins Town Administrator Jim Musgrave said he is looking for some conditioner for the grass, and trying to get the sprinkler system back into shape.

Apparently, the sprinklers settled once the ground thawed and water softened the ground, and they will need to be rearranged to make them work right, he said.

When the Wiggins Fire Department recently practiced, firefighters sprayed the field with their water, rather than just put it anywhere, said Wiggins Police Chief Leroy Dilka.

This field is part of renovations at the park, and the Great Outdoors Colorado officials have been pleased with the latest report, said Wiggins Town Clerk Jessica Warden-Leon.

She said concrete work has begun at the fields, and the backstop and fencing have been taken down to allow work. Gravel was ordered for the playground, and workers are getting ready to put sprinklers in at the other fields.

After that, workers will look at laying new sod in other areas, Warden-Leon said.

One hitch in the plans is that one of the public works employees was injured while working on the park, and will likely not be able to work for some time.
