Nate Berkus on decorating a home with souvenirs

    - May 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ask the interior designer Nate Berkus about a piece of dcor in his New York home, and youll very likely discover its a souvenir from one of his travels abroad.

The 15-pound black geode sitting on his coffee table? A memento of Paris Left Bank. It may not be as typically Parisian as, say, a watercolor of the Eiffel Tower, Berkus conceded. But when I look at it, it brings me back to the day. He added with a laugh, Ill never forget lugging that thing around in my backpack in Paris.

Your home should tell the story of who you are its a decorating adage Berkus often repeats to his clients and, these days, on American Dream Builders, the design-competition reality show he hosts on NBC. And I cant think of a more personal, interesting way to do that, he said, than with the things you brought back from the places you were lucky enough to see.

Recently Berkus gave tips for finding those kinds of souvenirs textiles, pottery, furniture that double as dcor. Following are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Q: How do you learn about markets?

A: Taxi drivers are the holy grail. I always ask taxi drivers and hotel concierges where they buy their pots and pans, where they sell their furniture, when that market is. No matter where you are Sri Lanka, Rome, Mexico theres always a market where the local population brings their things.

I was in Naples, Italy, and we had this driver, Signore Palladino, who had been driving for 40 years. Everyone knew him. Hed honk his horn, and the gates would open. A driver can really introduce you to things you would never have had access to. But you dont find that out unless you ask.

Recently I did a buying trip to Peru for One Kings Lane, and we had appointments with all sorts of artisans. But then the bus driver told us about this local artisan market in Cuzco where we found textiles, bowls, pottery, woven rugs, jewelry, everything we needed. So when you find out about something great, cancel your itinerary.

    - May 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (PRWEB) May 27, 2014

Gold Medal Service, an award-winning heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, drain cleaning, and waterproofing service company servicing all of New Jersey, is encouraging area homeowners to check the wiring in their homes during Electrical Safety Month in May.

Each year, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) sponsors Electrical Safety Month as part of its yearlong efforts to educate homeowners about electrical hazards around the house. The organization has a special Electrical Safety Illustrated magazine available for homeowners to learn how to best protect their families and homes from electrical hazards.

Electrical hazards can be, at best, inconvenient, and at worst, deadly, but theyre also largely preventable. Its vital to be aware of any potential problems around your home and to correct them if you identify any, said Mike Agugliaro, co-founder of Gold Medal Service. Our expert electricians can inspect wiring, outlets, appliances, and other electrical devices around your home and make sure youre protected from power surges, electrical fires, and lightning damage.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, as many as 47,700 home fires each year are connected to electrical failures or malfunctions, causing $1.4 billion in property damage, 418 deaths, and 1,570 injuries.

The ESFIs Electrical Safety Illustrated resource outlines how homeowners can implement the National Electrical Code, a nationwide benchmark for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection. Gold Medal Service experts can help homeowners install everything they need to meet the benchmark, including:

Apple to unveil new "smart home" system, report says

    - May 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Apple is reportedly getting ready to launch a new "smart home" system that will allow users to control their home's lights, security system, and other connected appliances via their iPhone or iPad.

The Financial Times reports the platform will be unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which is scheduled for June 2-6 in San Francisco.

The idea is to streamline the process of setting up and controlling devices throughout the home, according to the FT. Among other features, the system could reportedly be set to automatically turn on the lights when an iPhone connected to it enters a building. That's in line with ideas Apple outlined last November in a patent filing for a home automation system, as CNET detailed at the time.

The new platform would be Apple's latest attempt to challenge competitors Samsung and Google for the emerging market in smart home technology. Samsung recently debuted of its Smart Home line of refrigerators, washing machines and TVs that can be controlled from its smartphones and watches, while Google spent $3.2 billion earlier this year to acquire Nest Labs, maker of the Learning Thermostat and the Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector.

Apple is also pushing to expand smartphone technology into other aspects of modern life.

The Apple CarPlay system, demonstrated at the New York International Auto Show last month, incorporates Siri voice command to make calls and get directions, while also offering in-car music and other entertainment. In addition, Apple's iBeacon location-sensing technology, which debuted late last year, is already in use for enhanced shopping, indoor navigation, ticketing, and location-specific sales promotions.

Apple Working On Smart Home Functions For IPhone

    - May 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The smart home market is heating up, with news Tuesday that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is preparing to enter the world of home automation with software that lets users control residential lighting, appliances and security systems via their iPhones. Reports say Apple will debut thesoftware Monday at the much-anticipatedWorldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Apple aims to collaborate with other companies to produce products specifically created for the popular phones "smart home" capabilities, though each will undergo a number of privacy stipulations and quality tests, the Financial Times said Tuesday.

No details were given on exactly how the iPhone will interact with the home systems, but the Financial Times report said the iPhone may be able to perform a number of tasks, such as the ability to automatically turn on lights in a room when a resident with a paired iPhone enters.

True to form, Apple is entering the market after its competitors.

Rival Samsung last monthlaunched a smart home servicethatgives users the ability to control and manage their home devices through a single app by connecting electronic products like smartphones, TVs, digital cameras, refrigerators and washing machines through an integrated server. The service even lets you monitor the temperature of your washing machine cycle and adjust the coldness of your fridge.

Google-owned smart thermostat maker Nest may be acquiring Dropcam, a company that makes cameras that let users stream footage to a mobile device or car, as part of a larger plan to enter the home security space.

The Goji smart lockallows smart home fans on a budget to secure their houses from remote locations using their smartphones. Founder Gabriel Bestard launched the lock last year, which -- for less than $300 -- gives users the ability to view and allow guests in to their home from any location in the world.

But they're all years behind Rockleigh, New Jersey-based Crestron Electronics, which has been in the home automation and audio/video control business since 1968. Consumers can obtain a home automation system through Crestron that allows them to close blinds, turn off lights, adjust temperatures and power off televisions with the single click of a button. No smartphone necessary.
