Sick of doing the laundry? The latest hot Silicon Valley startup, Washio the subject of a new profile in New York Magazine lets you press a button on your phone and someone will come and pick up your laundry, or your dry cleaning.
If you actually prefer to do your own laundry in the Bay Area but the dryer's broken, the startup Handybook provides on-demand repairs for less than the cost of a traditional handyman. It offers superfast housecleaning services, too.

Other tasks can be handled with the same ease, thanks to the proliferation of niche startups. In San Francisco, you can order gourmet meal-delivery from SpoonRocket with the tap of an app, use Postmates to deliver virtually any item or BloomThat to send flowers on demand.
And of course, in several American cities you can easily open an app to get yourself an Uber ride instead of God forbid, standing at the corner and waiting for a cab to come by.
This is all to say that the excitement for niche services like these and the willingness for venture capitalists to fund them is quickly eliminating all your first world problems.
By solving these "problems," we're getting our time back less time stuck in traffic to pick up a meal, a few minutes saved by not having to make a phone call to order flowers, our weekend hours spared from the hassle of laundry. Arguably, this new free time will allow for more satisfying lives. At least that's the collective promise of these services. (As I've blogged about before, technologists tend to solve the problems they can see, so this situation also underlines the need for more socioeconomically, racially and age-diverse technologists.)

Expect lane closures while maintenance crews work on the Anna Maria Island Drawbridge on Thursday.
After the Memorial Day weekend, drivers in Sarasota, and Manatee counties are advised to use caution in the following areas where the Florida Department of Transportation says road construction or other projects are underway:
SARASOTA COUNTY
Interstate 75 from Sumter Boulevard in North Port to River Road. Crews widening the highway to six lanes. Watch for signals and barricades. Lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-75 from University Parkway to the Charlotte County line. Expect delays. Crews are installing closed-circuit cameras, roadside sensors and other equipment for an intelligent transportation system.
Fruitville Road, Bee Ridge Road and State Road 72 between I-75 and U.S. 41. Intermittent lane closures from 7 pm. to 6 a.m. while crews repair concrete.
I-75 at Fruitville Road, Laurel Road, Jacaranda Road and Sumter Boulevard. Crews replacing overhead signs. Lane closures between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.
I-75 at Jacaranda Boulevard and Laurel Road. Crews installing lights. No lane closures expected.
Bee Ridge Road from Cattleman Road to Phillippi Creek. Lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. during repaving, drainage work, guardrail installation and curb and gutter work.
Midnight Pass Road between Riegals Landing Drive and Winding Way. Intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Wednesday while crews remove vegetation.

Manitobas Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) has confirmed the provinces second on-farm case of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus in a finisher barn in southeast Manitoba.
The CVO has been advised the animals on this farm have shown no symptoms of PED.
PED is a reportable disease in Manitoba. Producers are encouraged to remain vigilant with the necessary biosecurity protocols that prevent the spread of PED and are reminded they must report all suspected cases to their veterinarian.
To date, eight high-traffic or environmental sites have tested positive for PED, including two cases where it is likely pigs contracted PED at high-traffic sites and not on-farm.
High-traffic sites move or handle large numbers of pigs and include livestock assembly yards, abattoirs, truck-wash stations and livestock trailers.
Manitobans are reminded PED is not a food safety issue and it does not affect humans. However, it can be a severe and often fatal illness in newborn and young pigs. Older animals often have less serious symptoms and generally recover.
The CVO will continue to work with the pork industry to help any affected producers eliminate the disease from their herds and prevent it from spreading.
Producers who have questions about PED, biosecurity and related issues should contact the Manitoba Pork Council at 1-888-893-7447 (toll-free) or online at http://www.manitobapork.comfor their resources and expertise.
There are now 62 farm premises that have tested positive for PED across Canada including two in Manitoba, one in Prince Edward Island, one in Quebec and 58 in Ontario.
