Parents protest west-end schools toxic tar roofing

    - May 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A group of concerned parents are holding a demonstration to protest a TDSB decision to permit tar roofing repairs during school hours at a Toronto west-end school, which they say is noxious and giving their children headaches and nausea.

The protest began at 8 a.m. in front of Ossington/Old Orchard Junior Public School at 380 Ossington Ave., between College Street and Dundas Street West.

Last year, the school board struck a deal with AMP Solar Group Inc. to install solar panels at 311 schools that would generate power for about 4,250 Toronto homes, and as part of that deal the company would repair badly needed repairs atop school roofs at some 32 schools.

The repairs began at the Ossington school on Thursday and the concerned parents say the tar kettle where the tar is heated emits some serious fumes. A number of kids were sent home with complaints on Thursday and Friday, said parent Heidi Pyper. Her daughter complained of a sore throat but her classmate felt she had been punched in the throat, she said.

I cannot believe that they are taking this cavalier attitude about our kids health, she said.

Pyper added that parents have been told the work could continue for another two weeks. A number of families opted to keep their kids home on Friday and some with asthma had to use their puffers as did several teachers.

Parent Sandy Pedrogao, who has two children at the school, told CityNews in an email, They have advised that we tape off some of the doors and not open the windows (this will be terrible with the weather forecast for next week). The forecast is for 28 C on Monday.

The board said on its website that there are no long term effects from the tar fumes, that people with respiratory problems should avoid the exposure to the fumes and that the symptoms will go away once the exposure ends.

TDSB spokesman Ryan Bird added the citys public health inspector visited the site and didnt identify any health-related issues.

To address the parents concerns, the school will take extra steps to reduce the odour and increase ventilation, he said.

Sale of Sunnyview nursing facility could pay for district judge, county offices

    - May 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Saturday, May 24, 2014, 3:28p.m.

Commission Chairman Bill McCarrier has proposed using proceeds from the sale of the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to pay for construction of a county office building, costing about $12.1 million, and a district judge office in Cranberry, which should cost about $1 million.

It's the first time that McCarrier has said how he would like to use the proceeds. Earlier, McCarrier said commissioners hadn't decided how to pay for the building projects.

The proposal is tentative because commissioners don't know exactly how much they'll clear from the Sunnyview sale, which closed May 15. The buyer, Investment 360 of Lakewood, N.J., took control of the facility May 18.

County Controller Ben Holland praised the idea of not taking on additional debt.

I've said this all along, I believe that the county will have enough from the sale of Sunnyview to do those two projects, Holland said.

He added, People were very critical of the sale of Sunnyview, but with the office building, they'll have a tangible, physical sign of government spending. At the end of the day, they sold an asset, but built something.

I think it will resonate well with the taxpayers.

Some costs associated with the sale of Sunnyview have yet to be determined, commissioners said, including how much unemployment insurance the county may have to pay furloughed employees, along with a final accounting of accumulated sick and vacation time due employees.

Investment 360 laid off about two dozen people, commissioners said, including several nurses, housekeepers and others.

Steve Cahalan: New Culvers, Big Boar BBQ are planned

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Look for a Culvers restaurant to open in September at the former Happy Joes Pizza location in Onalaska.

And for Big Boar BBQ to open a sit-down restaurant in August at the current site of its cookshack parked along Hwy. 16 in West Salem.

Earlier this month, J2EG Custard LLC, owned by various members of the Galen Bowe family, bought the former Happy Joes building at 835 Oak Ave. S., off Hwy. 35 in Onalaska. It has been vacant since September 2012.

The building will be remodeled and enlarged, as its slightly smaller than a typical Culvers, said Galen Bowes son, Jake Bowe, one of the owners of the new Onalaska restaurant.

It will be the 10th Culvers either entirely or partly owned by different combinations of Bowe family members.

We thought it would be a good location for us, Jake said. Theres a lot of traffic and its in a different part of town than the other Onalaska Culvers, which also is owned by Bowe family members. Construction is expected to begin in June, he said.

The new Culvers will seat nearly 100 people and probably will have 40 to 50 employees, Jake said.

Jerry and Donna Beyer started their Big Boar BBQ business in 2010. Since then, theyve been serving up Southern-style barbecue from spring through fall at a cookshack trailer parked along Commerce Street, near their Beyer Cabinets business in West Salem.

They bought a second cookshack last year and use it to serve their barbecue at fundraisers, county fairs and other special events.

Weve had customers who wanted (Big Boar barbecue) year-round, Jerry said of his and Donnas decision to open a sit-down restaurant. Construction began several days ago, and the restaurant should open sometime in August, he said. It will seat about 48 people and probably will have eight or nine employees, he added.

Manhattan Breaks Ground On New Chick-Fil-A

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - The Chick-fil-A Cows were in the Little Apple Friday to help begin construction on Manhattans first stand-alone Chick-fil-A restaurant.

David Hamel, a former Kansas State University football player has been selected as the Owner/Operator of the new restaurant.

Hamel currently operates the Chick-fil-A in Topekas West Ridge Mall, and is relocating to the new restaurant in Manhattan where he spent his college football career as a punter for the KSU team under Head Coach Bill Snyder.

"One thing that I believe has been created within you know, Coach Snyder and just the town of Manhattan is this family environment and family atmosphere," Hamel said. "And so when I think about the partnership not only with Coach Snyder and the life lessons he taught me through leadership and his goals for success has obviously taught me what it means to run a very successful business and to be a great family man."

Chick-fil-A will celebrate the grand opening of the new Manhattan restaurant by giving away a one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A meals to the first 100 adults in line on opening day.

The new restaurant is expected to open in the middle of August.

Boondocks' new owners plan 'destination spot'

Some changes have been made or are underway at Boondocks Restaurant and Sports Bar on St. Helena Island, but the biggest addition is yet to come.

A new ownership and management team of Marlene Kiste, Jesse Johnson and Travis Hunter intend to add miniature golf to the 7-acre property on U.S. 21.

"That's kind of my baby," Hunter said. "I'm a huge putt-putt fan. ... I'd do putt-putt right now while we talked if I could."

The Boondocks team is working with Beaufort County planners to get permits for the course at the restaurant at 1760 Sea Island Parkway. It will have at least 18 holes and possibly 36, Hunter said.

Construction could begin by the end of summer, he said.

County planning director Tony Criscitello confirmed that the Design Review Team has been approached about the project.

The restaurant is also getting updated, as well. The new owners took over in early May. The upstairs bar has been renovated, and the exterior is being freshened to add curb appeal for passing motorists.

A concrete slab in the rear of the building will be converted into outdoor, non-smoking dining space, Hunter said.
